Whispers in the walls revealed albrecht was alive and trapped in the plague year of 1999. Operator can't be sent because they'd be cut off from their support system but drifter doesnt really have much of anyone so they're fine (or something). Loids sends them back in time through an exploit with the vessels and their infested nature.

Recap of the Old War pretty much:

Albrecht Entrati was an Orokin scientist who studied the Void. One day he decided to go into it.
While he was diving into it, his diving bell broke. This exposed him to the Void.
There, he encountered something that looked identical to him, and called him his childhood nickname, extending its hand.
Albrecht ran away through the portal, got severely injured, and told his daughter Euleria (you will know her as Mother in the Necralisk) to close it.
When it closed, the creature's fingers got cut off and started to grow.
The Orokin used the fingers to make Reliquary Drives that allowed them to use the void to travel great distances quickly.

The Orokin after millenia of plundering the Solar System's resources decided to colonize a faraway star system, Tau.
They sent the Sentients, robots with adaptive properties, to prepare Tau for them. During this time, the Sentients grew consciousness and realized "Hey the Orokin are evil and will just ruin Tau too".
The Orokin also sent the Zarimans, including the Ten-Zero, which contained civillians who would colonize Tau.
The Zariman used a reliquary drive to try jumping to Tau, but there was an accident and the Zariman got lost in the Void.
The adults went insane, and the children had to fight them off.
You, the player, were protecting a group of your fellow students. Here, you encountered one who looked just like you, called you by the nickname your dad gives you, and extended its hand.
It told you it could save them, all of them, but you had to want it. You took the deal.

Somehow, the Zariman returned, with only the children. They had magical Void Powers.
Margulis, Ballas' lover, cared for the Tenno and served as their surrogate mother.
One of the Tenno, Rell, believed he saw the entity that you the player saw, and knew it was a threat.
Margulis didn't believe him, or at least didn't want to. Rell's autism also made him an outcast. He was shunned from the other Tenno.
One of the Tenno (Rell, or maybe yourself), blinded Margulis by accident with their powers.
The Orokin studied them and put them in Cryosleep, feeling they were too dangerous.

The Sentients rebelled against the Orokin. The Orokin were overwhelmed as the Sentients were easily capable of adapting and taking over their advanced weaponry.
The Orokin, specifically Ballas, used the Infestation and created a strain of it that would turn people into powerful soldiers. Warframes.
The issue was that the Warframes were uncontrollable, berserk monsters.
Rhino Prime eventually broke loose and started rampaging and eating people.
Suddenly, he went into the Cryochambers and became docile.
The Orokin realized that the Children -- The Tenno-- were somehow able to tame the Warframes.
The Warframes were now the Orokin's best weapons.

Margulis didn't like the fact that the children were used as weapons, so she spoke out against the Orokin.
She was executed-- even Ballas, who seemed to genuinely love her, voted to kill her.
Ballas grew bitter against the Empire and started working with Hunhow, one of the leaders of the Sentients, to create a weapon against the Warframes.
He revealed the secret of the Tenno.
Hunhow's daughter, Natah, was a mimic, and was designed to look like Margulis. Her goal was to manipulate the Tenno against the Orokin.
However, Natah grew to love the Tenno too. She became the Lotus.
The Tenno defeated the Sentients, but Lotus knew the Orokin were evil too.
On the day of celebration for their victory, the Night of the Naga Drums, the Tenno turned against the Orokin.
This campaign lasted a little while. Once the Orokin were all seemingly wiped out, the Tenno were once again put to rest, until the System needed them again.

That's the basic gist of the history before Awakening, I skipped out on the Old Peace as you haven't reached that quest yet.
Anyways, the rest of the game happens.

Drifter is from an alternate timeline. They made the same deal as Operator, but in this timeline, instead of being granted powers, the Man in the Wall used wordplay. "I can save THEM". Drifter was stranded alone.
They took solace in Duviri, a book (written by Euleria) that helped children regulate their emotions, as the Void had the power to make emotions manifest.
Drifter's emotions made Duviri real. They were best friends with Dominus Thrax. However, since Thrax was a book character and Duviri was just a story, Drifter got older, but Thrax stayed the same. Drifter wanted to leave, so Thrax started executing them so they'd stay.
This was also a timeloop so Drifter stopped aging. Eventually, Teshin and Lotus' hand fell into Duviri (after Act 1 of New War).
The rest of Duviri Paradox quest takes place, Drifter regains their memories, and now leave Duviri, then the rest of New War plays out.

At the end of the New War, Ballas used Praghasa, Lotus' mother, to drain the sun and tear open a hole in the Void so that they could Void Jump to Tau. We stop him, but the Man in the Wall grows more powerful because of that tear.
The rest of the game so far is spent on stopping him.
That's why we track down Albrecht, who became obsessed with MITW.
Albrecht had a secret lab underneath Deimos. Here, he had a time machine to 1999 (which was important, there's some calculations he did. We don't know for what exactly)
There's also these giant Vessels. These were made with the DNA of the Hex, as well as some other technology and infestation. They are weapons built specifically against the Man in the Wall.

Because of reasons, Operator cannot go to 1999, it is too dangerous. Drifter goes. Here, they track down Albrecht, who is captured by Scaldra, this branch led by Neci Rusalka-- who is possessed by the Man in the Wall.
There's a large nuclear explosion as the Techrot are damaging the nuclear reactor, and the Murmur also break out there. Hollvania is destined to explode on New Year's Day.
Albrecht has created a timeloop for December 31st.
Drifter goes on December 31st to stop the explosion. Drifter meets the Hex. They work together to try and save Albrecht and stop the explosion.
Albrecht tells Drifter to kill Rusalka, which they don't because she's a victim.
MITW takes advantage and teleports the three of them away, leaving the Hex alone to save the city.
They fail. MITW taunts Drifter, Drifter tries saving them, they fail.
Albrecht shows up and tells Drifter the only way to save them is to "know" them.
Drifter extends the timeloop to the full year.
