the duviri paradox kind of beats you over the head with the fact that it's a metaphor for maladaptive daydreaming.
drifter was dealing with a lot of trauma and from that they made a fantasy land to hide in.
the basic characters already existed in the story they read but their emotions filled in the personalities.
thrax was a character, but due to drifter's mind he became a reflection of drifter in the moment he created him.
and the other characters became reflections of other parts of drifter's mind.
and when they tried to leave thrax was still that scared kid who didn't want to be alone
so thrax turned against him, making the spiral to torture them, and because of that drifter lost their emotions and their ability to control the island like they used to.

In theory, Drifter is an avid codex completionist, knowning stuffs that some players not much in the lore don't know themselves (example: Nihil which was an nightwave exclusive and there's people who don't know the guy)
