ok so full disclaimer i havent played the game since cyberstan because I dont like where the devs have taken it since release but from what I have gathered from watching videos on the matter (and not just people who criticize the game but those who are generally positive on it) hive guard heavy armor change was hated for a few reasons

1. it didnt make the enemy more engaging, it just made them more annoying, you still deal with them the same way except now they just are more tedious to deal with

2. it further enforces the meta of gas/fire/explo against bugs because those still instantly deal with hive guards, even more so because their hp was nerfed to compensate the change

3. it doesnt make any sense for a grunt swarm enemy to have armor on the same tier as elite units

Also, on the matter of shield devs, they had very clear, defined weak spots and they were fairly easy to hit, while hive guards have inconsistent weak spots depending on what they are doing, especially in large groups

Basically its not that it made the enemy any harder it was just more annoying for people who didnt want to use the meta against bugs

but thats just what I gathered from videos I dont play the game, again, so thats not my opinion just what i understand to be community frustrations

I wanna make a few responses to this

1. The armor pen on the front was changed to AP4, but the main body was brought down to completely unarmored, ironically making them die twice as fast as they normally would. It has been reverted today, and can confirm that they take longer to kill now. It's very easy to take down a Hive Guard with a light pen weapon.

2. This is a valid point, and i do use gas in general, however it's very easy to either shoot between the head and the claw, or underneath the Hive Guard, still making the takedown faster than pre-patch Hive Guards.

3. I would agree, if the number of Hive Guards you would see usually wasn't being overstated. For example, shield devastators show up twice as much, and before this patch, the shield could not be destroyed.
