The name 'Astroforce' is too cool to leave as a one-off joke about remote control trains for Astrotrain. So, I'm gonna try and turn it into actual transformers.

To give Astrotrain something of an actual character (arc), he gets put in charge of a group of smaller transformers. Ones that he initally just sort of bosses around for a while, until a cataclysmic blunder causes half of them to lose their lives, and the other half to lose their respect for him.

These being 'cons that were to be tough enough to withstand atmospheric re-entry being...almost impressive how he lost half so quickly. Leaving him humiliated, but also shaken. Having never had actual control over others, and not realizing he was responsible for them, nor what it actually felt like to lose/fail them. He becomes much more protective over them, and undergoes a sort of maturation to leadership arc, but for a Decepticon.

The deceased:
Quasar: The weapons expert and orbital sniper/bombardier. Something of a prankster.
Cometcatcher: The space gunner and defense officer. A bit of an edgy tryhard.
Turntable: Docking & stabilization expert. Somewhat optimistic, and had hope for Astrotrain to grow.
Tektite: The engineer, repairman, and material refiner. Treated being a Decepticon as just a blue-collar job.

The survivors:
Starsail: The lazy, spacey, near stoner-like solar power gatherer and energon synthesizer. He prefers to drift through the cosmos or orbit, and just soak in the views & rays. Transforms into a solar array module, and coal tender.

Junction: The weary, nervous navigator and orbital controller. Deeply traumatized by losing half the squad, and secretly clingy of his remaining brothers, though he covers it with snark and backhanded remarks. Belittled sometimes, called 'Junk-tion.' Transforms into a low-gravity landing module, and freight car.

Collider: The bookish, uptight, and slightly snobby sensor & surveillance expert, who frequently gets into arguments with Junction about where they should go, or how to get there. Has aspirations to become a scientist, but frequently just gets stuck as engineer and repair technician. Transforms into a scanner/telescope module, and an observation car.

Shortwave: The grumpy but quick-witted communication expert, who acts as the 'adult' among the astroforce, and the defacto sub-leader. Sometimes enjoys messing with enemy communication systems to relax. Wishes he could switch around to work for Soundwave, but refuses to abandon his remaining brothers. Transforms into a communications module, and kaboose.

This would likely be very difficult to implement as an actual toy, so best left to non-physical media and comic books

An idea for how the disaster could go, is that working with Turbolance, to build up a solar array on Mercury--which gets attacked by the Autobots. In the chaos of the fight, the Astroforce gets wounded, and their shielding gets deeply cracked. A stray energon shot misses, and hits the sun, causing a mini-solar flare that breaks through the cracked shielding, and causes them to burn to death.

As they burned, Turntable simply gave a hopeful smile to Astrotrain as he perished. The triple-changer suffers nightmares of it.

Well...

Hotbox is one of the many Transporters on Cybertron, she is very quick to anger and quite the sadistic bot. After being convinced by Astrotrain (no design yet), she, Electra, Thrash (wip), and her brother Smokebox (no design yet), joined the Astroforce to scout out the many pieces of Megatron that was scattered to many far off places. With the final pieces supposedly on our planet.
