#amd crash 7800xt with up to date drivers
1 messages · Page 2 of 1
yorrielba on the AMD forums is also having good results with the settings I posted to work around the crashes with the latest AMD drivers.
He is thinking that it may have to do with anti-aliasing alone rather than all the settings I posted together and is doing additional testing. If he confirms that it is AA being on that is causing his crashes, I will try to replicate his findings in the coming days and post here.
It would be nice if the fix for all this all along is to just turn off AA
give that man a medal! 🫡
Just posted an additional comment, I've also had some time to test yesterday and today, and I can confirm the same thing: no crash after 4 games !
and yes, i'm pretty sure I did play with multiple vsync params already in the past, so I'd also lean towards something related to AA (or tripple buffering - hadn't tried that either)
I'm leaning towards AA or the unit tracks. I plan to test it more soon, most likely this weekend. But I'm happy everyone else seems to be having positive results with the workaround. We will all be ready for the Redstone update coming soon!
I have probably tested now over 20 hours of matches with no crashes (yes I've been playing too much BAR)
So i tryed turning off AA and unit tracks and still crashed all be it probably got 10 more minutes of gameplay than usual.
Steady, try implementing all the changes I posted together and see if that fixes it
AA and the setting I posted in here on September 22nd
Yesterday I played a 70min long game on supreme with mass units and it didnt crash 🎉
I played another 7 matches or so yesterday, no crashes. I’ve played 30+ no issues
I haven’t experimented yet with trying to narrow anything down. I’m waiting to see if anyone else has luck, but Steady trying just unit tracks and AA and it not working has me on standby.
I'm reposting the setting that has allowed some of us to play crash free with latest driver.
Underclock your card and implement the following
In game:
Resolution- full screen
Vsync- enabled
Frame rate limiter - lowest setting
Anti aliasing- Off
Unit tracks- 1 or lowest setting
AMD settings:
Under Beyond All Reason
Advanced —> Triple Buffering On
AMD Freesync- Off
AMD settings under Spring:
Look under Gaming, to the right of Home in the Radeon menus. If you don't see Spring, you can add it. it's in your Program Files\Beyond All Reason\data\engine\recoil_2025.04.08\spring.exe. This will set it for the client I think. I added this:
Wait for Vertical Refresh Always On
Freesync- Off
Also disable any other extra AMD Radeon features
Played another 10-15 matches this weekend. No crashes with the settings
I can confirm, no crashes ever since I followed these settings!!
I can confirm this
have had definitely already over 30 games without crashes
Can you guys stress test this by running a replay or two of those massive 150-180 player games
Would you be able to share the "Underclock your card" step? I want to include these instructions on the engine official site once you confirm to me your tests conclusion. Would be good if someone else in this thread could test indenpendently.
Did you have any custom settings applied on your amd gpu setup? Still no crashes since then?
Still no crash and no custom settings except for the 'max frequency' setting that I set according to my gfx specs (2615mhz for my 7900xtx merc 310). But to be clear, this setting alone was not enough to prevent the crashes (before massdrivers' suggestion I was already using that). AMD default settings allow higher clock speed and it seems to be usually fine. But because my card is good enough for my use cases I configured it with safer values.
so in theory the only thing you have going on is updated amd drivers?
i wonder if others could corroborate on amd having fixed their shit
badosu, I think you may have misunderstood Seb. If I understood him correctly, he is saying that he had a 'max frequency' underclock with the latest drivers and was still crashing. The crashing stopped when he coupled the underclock with the suggested settings I posted as a workaround. In other words, underclock coupled with new AMD drivers did not work until he added in the settings I posted.
The same is the case for me. My underclock did not fix the crashing the latest drivers. I tired several times.
my card settings for my undervolt are 1025mV, power limit -10%, max frequency is ~2250 on a Sapphire Pulse 7800XT. I generally run this setting for everything and experienced crashing with those settings with the updated drivers before I made the other adjustments previously posted as a workaround.
I see
Thank you for clarifying.
I'd love to get a 'silver bullet' solution here, that might not be optimal for any individual card but "resolves" for everyone, that's where I'm coming from
We've been seeing this issue in ZK too (not me particularly, I just got communicated about it)
Fascinating. I didn't know it was in ZK
if it's appearing in ZK means its not an edge case for BAR (maybe), so I'd like to have an informative post in the official engine website
I will look into this when I get a chance. Not sure when I'll be able to play or do this but will update when I try a stress test. I think I did play a big 20v20 or something with the updated settings and didn't crash, but it was just one match
All I know is I'm a lot happier now with a workaround that actually works. I have no idea why this combination of settings has worked, but before I had to use old drivers. So I'm pleased it has worked for me and at least 3 others now!
Sounds good badosu. I appreciate you guys popping in and talking about this still. We need to keep pressure up on AMD too.
The 3 others are not the full settings you shared and just the underclocking or full?
The 3 others I'm referring to had to input all the settings from my understanding. Unclocking alone didn't do it to my knowledge.
I think there are others further back in this channel that fixed it with underclocking alone though
it just didn't work for me
or some of the rest of us
aight ty
once you feel confident and are up to sharing a detailed step-by-step of the procedure I'd be happy to use it
Sounds good. I can plan to add a little more color to the work around instructions instead of just "underclock your card" and making it more procedural in general. I really should test out removing the underclock and seeing if the other settings alone fix it too.
I stress tested the 27v27 match from June at 3x game speed. No crashes with all the settings in place. I don't know when larger events took place.
Thanks. I just stress tested Project SD on June 28th 51v48v51 no crashes.
So far it WORKS for me!😀
So my friend has an AMD card, he reverted to the older 24.12.1 or whatever drivers, but his BAR still crashes within like 1-5 minutes every time. He doesnt use discord, but is there some official resource on how to play with AMD GPU or are you just fucked?
<@&549291872192036874> can we pin this message here? This seems to be a nice viable temporary solution for players for whom 24.12.1 rollback isn't possible or not worth their while
technicolourdreams
Please remember that the <@&549291872192036874> and support teams consist entirely of volunteers, with lives, families, jobs and all that. As much as we'd like to be able to consistently stay on top of things for BAR, real life takes priority - we will get to it as soon as we can.
Any chance you can try each of the change in isolation to see which one or a few really do the trick.
yorrielba has started trying to narrow it down. His early results are showing that anti-aliasing at 4x may be to blame. I will start looking at this soon to verify. His posts are on the AMD forums: https://pcforum.amd.com/s/question/0D5KZ00000rADAq0AO/beyond-all-reason-gpu-timeout-with-2531-and-newer-drivers
He played some matches crash free at 2x but it's too early to conclude anything.
God tier post, I've been pulling my hair out trying to fix these crashes. Lets hope this fixes it.
Sorry haven't had time to play that much lately and forgot to check the chat. But I can confirm that since applying Massdriver's settings, I've had 0 crash. We can exclude the undervolting / frequency capping routes as root causes, those CAN create similar crashes but then they typically happen in many games not just BAR like it is the case here. I have unfortunately not got much time to test but according to all tests done by people here and on the forum, AA 4x (or AA 4x combined with something) is very likely the setting that is causing the crash with drivers that are more recent than 24.12 (with these old ones, no problem with AA 4x).
Something strange is that I never crashed while just spectating games which is also very annoying... otherwise I could just spec games with many players to test and do something else in the meanwhile, but in my case this never triggered a crash, not sure if it did for any of you ?
It seems to me that antialiasing then maybe one of the central root causes. I think it would be useful to suggest to more people to disable anti aliasing completely and see if their experience changes, and if it's not then we're back to the Massdriver solution set
I'm gonna restore all default params, except AA 2x instead of 4x and report back
just had a 40min game with default amd settings, adaptative vsync and AA 2X: no crash
Trying now with my 5700XT, same issues with both this and Zero-K
if you're using one of the latest intel cpus, I had to undervolt mine a little to get it to stabilize.
modern alchemy
2 more games with default settings and AA 2x, still no crashes
7900xtx oc
This worked for me using the adrenaline software, no other changes.
In addition to Seb_Lz, plikcoogo and yorriebla have also reported that 4x AA appears to be the issue for them which is great news. I still intend to confirm but work has gotten in the way recently.
@burnt escarp you have the most cursed amd card i know, can you try these and let us know how you make out
Can confirm no crash after doing this
Extensive testing still required tho
Welp loaded a online game... and yea crashed
seems to only work against bots not actual games agh
back to backdating my drivers
theubiman, did you try turning anti-aliasing off?
no i didnt
Try turning it off or turning it to 2x instead of 4 or above
It has helped some of us. If that doesn't work you can try the full work around settings I posted earlier.
You can find anti-aliasing in the graphics settings in game. Let us know if it fixes it!
Once confirmed let's share the findings on the AMD forums. Maybe they can find what the issue or difference between 4x and 2x is
More than extensive testing, we require someone to assure us they are methodical and confirm the findings with a somewhat conclusive response.
e.g. tested this most simple settings change with many other significant variables changing and can confirm after xxx that this seems to be the most likely culprit
most people have difficulty with keeping things simple and well structured in their analysis, so paying attention to this would help us making our case with more authority/confidence
Sadly, I still crash with no AA, x2, and x4.
this setting? #1357160016767090709 message
from what I see, we'll not get a silver bullet, seems like maybe we'll have to make a support matrix, e.g.:
- whatever family: disable 4x
- cards bla, blorg, blirgh: undervolt
- whatever cards: no solution
From my experiences it's been the golden bullet changing only this setting but milage may differ
yep, I mean in terms of supporting more than one or a single family of cards
Ofc, just giving my context.
in which circumstance we'd need reliable reporting on which specific cards are ok/not ok and the procedure for each.
Have you tried the more comprehensive workaround settings posted earlier?
Underclock your card and implement the following
In game:
Resolution- full screen
Vsync- enabled
Frame rate limiter - lowest setting
Anti aliasing- Off
Unit tracks- 1 or lowest setting
AMD settings:
Under Beyond All Reason
Advanced —> Triple Buffering On
AMD Freesync- Off
AMD settings under Spring:
Look under Gaming, to the right of Home in the Radeon menus. If you don't see Spring, you can add it. it's in your Program Files\Beyond All Reason\data\engine\recoil_2025.04.08\spring.exe. This will set it for the client I think. I added this:
Wait for Vertical Refresh Always On
Freesync- Off
Yes @burnt escarp try this one
Had an hour and a half to test play and decided to test it differently. I kept all my comprehensive workaround settings EXCEPT for anti-aliasing which I changed to 4x. I played a one hour glitters 8v8 match no crash. It doesn't mean much yet got to test more
But I gotta get some sleep and gtw tomorrow
I think my goal will be to take away settings one at a time to see what ends up triggering it. If I can't make it crash with 4x AA, I'll take away triple buffering next
I lost the glitters match too :{
or im sorry it was smolders
but yeah
I did testing when the issue was first reported and found that the maps might make a difference. Some would never crash when others would always crash at some point.
Strange, I have a 7900XT and going to 2X AA in the game solved my constant crashing issue.
BTW @burnt escarp what drivers version you are running right now ? and with what GPU ?
ok 3rd 8v8 I crashed with 4x AA. I had all other work around settings enabled!
so yes truly looks like AA is a huge factor here
I'll try 2x next. Has anyone tried 8x AA? I'm curious if it's only 4x
4x AA is bad for AMD users!
I only tried no AA, 2X AA and 4X AA. I only had crashes with 4X. 8X AA is overkill but will try this weekend.
Even though I use completely different settings to the ones in the pinned post, disabling AA has seemingly fixed the crashes for me, on a 7900GRE. 8x and 2x were crashing, did not test 4x.
tested several more matches 2x AA no crashes
going to set all other settings to default next
and keep AA 2x
So what AA settings are good for AMD gpus on the newest drivers? Im on a 7900xtx
I have been using no AA and it has been ok so far. Can honestly barely tell its off anyways due to to how often you are zoomed out.
AA off or AA 2x for 7000 and 6000 series AMD GPUs
Played more at 2x AA yesterday and seems rock solid.
2x AA still stable after a lot of matches good to go!
@burnt escarp You tried this one no? Maybe there was some driver update?
Oddly enough I still crashed with AA disabled, but haven't crashed with triple buffering enabled
They have reported 2x AA
If you have been stable long enough it seems to me AA settings indeed alleviate the issue
Put it on 4x aa and triple buffering
does this work with the newest drivers or do you still need to use v24.12.1 ?
wanting to update my drivers since it's causing crashes on other games but I am stable in BAR with the above driver version
Ornj, try updating to the latest AMD drivers and setting anti-aliasing in game to 2x or off. Having it on 4x AA causes crashes for a lot of us.
Yes, 25.9.1 is stable with triple buffering and x4 AA enabled.
Nevermind, I crashed two hours after posting this
With AA disabled and triple buffering on, I haven't crashed. With Triple buffering and x4 AA crashes are reduced, but still occur
also where do I find this tripple buffering setting? I tried looking in the "in-game" settings, couldn't find it, tried in the lobby settings, couldn't find it. any advice would be greatly appreciated
triple buffering is in your AMD settings for Beyond All Reason. Find Beyond All Reason, look under advanced, and then select "On" by Triple Buffering
If you disable aa in game and enable it via override game settings in AMD adrenaline to 2x or 4x does it still crash
I ll try that
I'll try with 4x forced in the drivers
I'm trying with those settings for now
AA deactivated in the game
Triple buffering ON in the drivers ...
Forced AA doesn't seems to be working
Didn't crash during BPL with AA disabled and triple buffering on
I just crashed with forced AA 4x in the drivers .... even if it did not seems to be working ingame.
Removing the forced AA 4X from the drivers and going back to 2X ingame
chimming in , since switching to 2x I have a total of 1 crash
and that one wasn't even gpu related
omg, i thoughtthere was an easy solution forthe crashes
i get 1 every hour and a half or so
usualyl was a game freeze, now its a computer freeze
Turn on triple buffering in amd settings for bar and see if that eliminates crashes
Seems the surefire method is to disable all AA and enable triple buffering in adrenaline for BAR
i had no crasehs today, updated the amd card to newest driver
Yeah disabling AA and triple buffering seem to be sure fire. 2x AA fixes it for me it seems but good to have that extra insurance
I have had the same results. Disabling AA seems to have worked.
https://gitlab.com/OpenMW/openmw/-/issues/8233
I found this in the known issues of the new openMW release today
"Hardware antialiasing may cause driver timeouts on AMD GPUs of the RX 6000 and 7000 series; this is a driver bug AMD has yet to address"
This matches the observations made in this thread
Oh btw when trying forced 4x AA on the drivers .... it seems the AA was not working but I had a crash anyway ....
im having the same issues but i dont know how to disable them where would i find this
start a game then go to graphics tab in settings then disable anti aliasing
Remarkable effort in tracking down AA as a huge culprit and also for the triple-buffering hint! Kudos to whoever spend that much time.
So for the records:
RX 7800 XT
- 2AA
- tripple buffering
- driver version 25.11.1
Has been running perfectly for me since i started testing like 1-2 weeks ago. Zero crashes.
Interesting. The whole thing is weird how AA 4x is so crash inducing
I'm guessing this is the same problem for me, running 7900gre
how does one even change AMD settings, apologies I'm on par with boomers when it comes to tech troubleshooting
it crashes so badly to the point I can't even get into bar to change bar settings
so no idea what I can do atp
I had to fresh install BAR then was able to get into settings before it would crash on me.
which settings do you even change, I managed to get into it and on graphics settings but there weren't any useful options
ah you have to do it in game, not in lobby
gotcha, i'm just dumb
never tweaked in settings lol
thanks
np, hope it works out for ya
Gentlemen, it is with some fanfare and some sadness that I unsubscribe from this thread, as I purchased a 90-series Radeon card today, which as far as I know has no such OpenGL crash issues. I bid you all farewell (for now) 🤘
