I've tried renaming one of my drives in disk management to the old directory it was working for, and now I get this and there's no logs in the "launcher-logs"

#

No log is being created

#

Ok, I have no clue in what state of brokeness all of this is, we can try to untangle it, but I believe much safer option will be to purge everything with fire and do clean install

lime lintel
#

Well, I've uninstalled, but failed to re-install

#

I still have a copy of the old files so nothing is lost

worn otter
#

So:

  1. Make sure you removed application from windows. When you search in windows in the settings, bar should not show up
  2. Stash the copy you have around (some selection of files in data), whatever settings you had in old place
  3. Install something like https://www.voidtools.com/ search for beyond, Beyond etc and purge all files you can find
  4. Set up windows in some way you want
  5. Do a reboot just to be sure
#
  1. Download the installer from the website, to make sure it's one of the latest ones and not some old broken version
#
  1. Run installer, in the installer will allow you to pick the location you want it to be
#
  1. Let launcher run and install everything, as last step it will try to update itself (link on website is not updated yet, a bit on purpose, will hapen in the afternoon), let it update, update should end up in the same directory as it was

Beyond all reason does not show in the program and files window despite having a working copy installed

lime lintel
#

I can manually put it somewhere else and thats it

worn otter
#

Step 1 is to make sure that it's not longer marged as installed in windows registry

#

step 2 is so you have backup

#

step 3 is to delete every single copy of bar there is on your disk, so that when we do step 7, there is only one around

#

For step 3 unfortunatelly external tool is needed because windows file search just doesn't work and sucks

lime lintel
#

What is step 4

#

Set up windows....?

#

man, I'm going to need to postpone this, what a hassle

hollow basalt
#

Open them if it's nice outside, otherwise close them.

lime lintel
#

Will do 👍

worn otter
#

just if you want to do anything with drive leters, do it then

#

if not, then not

#

I see....

Not sure if appending on this post is the right place, but I just hit a BSOD when attempting to update the launcher

#

I've uploaded a log (I think)

hollow basalt
#

-uplog

lime lintel
#

I'm just going to try and transfer all my settings and custom stuff to the new location. What a waste.

worn otter
#

Can you please upload log file here from launcher-logs directory in both old and new installation?

lime lintel
#

They're both new instalations, are you referring to the copy I freshly installed before the updater as the old one?

#

The initial install doesn't let me choose a specific directory. It has the options "install for all users" and "install for only this user" or something along those lines. The updater does not work if you select "for this user only." I reproduced this twice.

#

Try it yourself!

#

To clarify, when I say "does not work", I mean it does not try to update the existing install that is placed in users>local>programs

#

I don't know if this matters, because it really shouldn't, but I swap OS's regularly, and I don't boot from my "main" drive. The users>local directory is on a drive I'm not always booting from.

#

I can't imagine this matters in any way shape or form. Just extra info.

worn otter
#

A bunch of installs and uninstalls as user and for all users from the previous version and letting it update in different orders. Effectively all works as expectected with only a bit weird behavior when there exist 2 installs at the same time, but just doing uninstall and install fixes all of that as expected.

#

I can't do more testing then that, if there is any bug or anything, I need steps to reproduce, because in all my testing (and I've done more before, this time did again just to record it and again all just worked)

lime lintel
#

Wait a second. The 3rd copy you installed to users. After you run the updater, the directory got changed to c>programs

worn otter
#

That's what I described as "only a bit weird behavior when there exist 2 installs at the same time, but just doing uninstall and install fixes all"

#

Basically when you do install, and then install. Then update might not work correctly: that is expected

#

But doing uninstall, fixes all of that

lime lintel
#

I uninstslled everything. This behavior happened to me on 1st install after following your steps above.

worn otter
#

As seen on video

#

Well, I need steps to reproduce 🤷‍♂️ because as you see, it works for me

lime lintel
#

No matter what I do, the updater creates a copy of the game in C>programs

#

I cannot get it to do anything else

#

Doesn't matter where I install to initially, updater will always go to c programs

#

Even if c programs doesn't exist it still looks for it

worn otter
#

I'm sorry, but I can't reproduce the behaviour. The only additional thing you can do is again remove everything and in addition to that also remove everything related to bar from windows registry: I've never done it myself, so can't guide you through that

#

But I'm blind here

lime lintel
#

Can a network drive be messing it up?

worn otter
#

Maybe? I don't know, i don't have one, can't test on one

#

I don't think so but at this point who knows

lime lintel
#

Well, I can't test anything at the moment, so it's all just talk

worn otter
#

Note also that bar devs are not authors of that installer, we use it as library, we just configure it and can test. I've fixed one bug upstream there in the past, but we aren't familiar deeply with that code and all different ways it can break, and you seem to hit some super weird edge case

lime lintel
#

If I encountered a problem like this elsewhere, I'd be tempted to call it user error. But this is the first time I've had something like this happen with any software.

#

Well, it's not the first time, this has happened multiple times, just only with BAR.

orchid spruce
#

one thing you can try:
in registry, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software, find a weird named folder like a5671b31-085d-5fba-830a-66a891c6a4a4, there should be a key with bar install location
delete that registry folder

lime lintel
orchid spruce
#

try finding something that has bar install location

lime lintel
#

in current user software?

orchid spruce
#

yeah

lime lintel
#

I don't see BAR

orchid spruce
#

i.e. i have something like that

lime lintel
orchid spruce
#

just try looking if any folder has these keys

lime lintel
#

I don't see it

orchid spruce
#

ok, i think there is a search function

#

try searching for folder name where it tries to install to

lime lintel
#

I see it under applications

#

but it's just the exe

#

there's this

orchid spruce
#

i don't think thats what you need

lime lintel
#

that's where it's installed to

orchid spruce
#

ok i did a fresh install gimme a sec

#

try HKEY_USERS/some long string/Software/a5671b31-085d-5fba-830a-66a891c6a4a4

lime lintel
#

nothing

#

I'm searching "beyond"

#

I can find a registry for the executable that's it

orchid spruce
#

does it say that for you?

lime lintel
#

yeah

orchid spruce
#

weird it should be there

lime lintel
#

under users > user > software? nope

#

I can see pretty much everything else I have installed to user

orchid spruce
#

do you have multiple folders in hkey_user?

lime lintel
#

yes, the others didn't have much though

orchid spruce
#

try running regedit under admin and search for folder name again

lime lintel
#

looks the same

orchid spruce
lime lintel
#

I searched "beyond" in the registry, only came up with a bunch of stuff from notepad++ and "classes" folder

orchid spruce
lime lintel
#

should I?

orchid spruce
#

yeah

lime lintel
#

Alright now what

orchid spruce
#

try installer

#

see if it detects any folder

lime lintel
#

Did not detect

#

running updater

#

OH

#

it worked lmao

orchid spruce
#

yeah weird-ass installer

#

Let it be known

orchid spruce
#

well i checked it's source code and it checked like 3 locations

#

i wondered what shell was and apparently it checked even that...

lime lintel
#

I'm finally not going to be bothered by the patcher anymore

#

THANK GOD

#

Good stuff man

#

@orchid spruce so ununstalling doesn't get rid of the registry I guess?

orchid spruce
#

hell if i know

#

i'll check it actually

#

seems to get rid of it

lime lintel
#

And yet I still had it despite uninstalling from that location

#

Well, I had two copies of the game and uninstalled it once, and used a 3rd party tool to attempt the rest to be specific
