Can we change the default ranks? Automatically new players are weighed at rank 17, which ALWAYS have to learn basic things during playing, which essentially equates to them playing like simple ai...which is fine, however they are weighed as being rank 17...so sometimes you get 3 on a team, so then thats 3 people basically not doing anything. This all would be fine if it was unranked, but it does create a bit of toxicity and probably pushes new players away
#Default OS 1 not 17

OpenSkill algorithm uses a few terms such as mu and sigma which can be confusing for those unfamiliar. As such BAR interface uses different names, this post is a reference for the different terms.
mu or skill - One of the two values stored to represent player skill. Winning games will typically increase this value.
sigma or uncertainty - The second of two values and is used to represent player uncertainty, the higher the number the less certain the algorithm is about the player. Playing more games will lower this value.
game rating - The value used for game balance, it is defined currently as skill - uncertainty. This means given the defaults of skill = 25, uncertainty = 8.3 new players have a game rating of 16.7
leaderboard rating - The value shown on leaderboads. Defined as skill - 3 * uncertainty meaning everybody starts with a leaderboard rating of 0.

You can see a full explanation of Openskill (our rating algorithm) on the site: https://www.beyondallreason.info/guide/rating-and-lobby-balance
The site guide answers many questions such as "Why can't new players start with a lower rating" and "Why can't we rate based on in-game scores?"
I understand. I recently picked the game up and initially i didn't get why people were so upset for me starting in the back and not making units all game, but after 50 hours now i get it 😛
Yeah the rating system is not working properly for beginners. There needs to be some easy solution like provisional rating.
And why cant new players still start at 17 os, but are treated for matchmaking purposes the first 10-20 games with a constant os of for instance 10?
