#Tactical Pauses

It's kinda annoying when in the heat of the battle one of the team pause the game to discuss tactics.

It's a Real Time Strategy game, so it almost feels like an abuse of the Pause functionality.

Suggestion:

When paused, private team chat is disabled so all comms are public.

If you've found people doing this when looking back on replays, please report them for such kind of unsportsmanlike behaviour.

This doesn't seem to be a widespread behavioural issue, and if it was that serious then they would take comms off the game and into some place like Discord or TeamSpeak, so designing an integrated solution to this problem into the game doesn't make a lot of sense when we can simply report these players and discourage them from a rule-abiding perspective

It's literally every game I play and is it even a reportable "offence"?

#

Yeah I did think about Discord and that if people really wanted to then they could still communicate.

But consider this, spectators cannot talk privately to a particular team in in-game chat. That's a measure put in place to prevent a spectator assisting any one team. However they could still give them advice on Discord and I'm sure they do.

#

Why would you want to keep private team chats available during pauses? Presumably the only reason would be so that you can chat tactics during the pause.

# muted knoll Why would you want to keep private team chats available during pauses? Presumabl...

I would say a legitimate reason for this is because sometimes when someone crashes and has to reload or has an emergency bio break it helps to not break the flow of team communication for both teams during the pause. TBH while pauses happen fairly often I'd say it's 1/100 or less that feel like someone pausing for tactical reasons vs legitimate reasons. If private chats were disabled you would also need to disable the pinging/drawing as well and I personally don't think that's necessary.

I've seen people make tactical pauses to save their commander wreck from being eaten by a teammate, and as much as I think that's an annoying thing, I still don't think it's a legit reason to pause. People pause sometimes because their teammate is doing something they don't like and they want it corrected immediately with a pause, but I don't think that's a correct usage of the pause button. I think pauses should be exclusively for real issues like bad connection or needing to do something in real life and having to go afk or something.

As for the talking on Discord thing, I've seen people admit they spectate coach people in live games, which I consider to be pretty sketchy. They think it's okay if they're limiting their view to just the one team (although I'm not actually sure you can do that before seeing people's positions first). I view that as a form of cheating, but other people seem to have a different opinion on extra eyes and brains playing in the game as they think so long as they don't have extra information it's okay, but it's definitely an unfair advantage I think. That and I just don't like the idea of coaching for video games much to begin with, which also makes me biased against it even if it's allowed.

"Actions While Paused" should be off by default and enabling it should disable ranked as an option.

There is no reason whatsoever in a "real time strategy" game that someone should be able to do actions while the game is paused.

I think the idea of forcing all comms to public while paused is a brilliant one. The game should also freeze your screen so you can't move the camera while paused.

I also agree that it's annoying when someone violates the rules to do a tac pause.

Good thing we can report them for it.

cinder mountain
#

This is worse than that

cinder mountain
#

the game allows you to game while paused in ranked by default...

high garden
#

As it should. We tried blocking actions while paused for a while. It sucked. We changed it back.

cinder mountain
#

that's lame as fuck - not real time

high garden
#

You know what's also lame? 15 people doing nothing while we wait for number 16 to reconnect.

cinder mountain
#

I think we have different definitions of real time in mind here

#

This is a joke for competition rts

gritty hinge
#

Is it "true" real time? No.

#

Does it make for a better player experience overall? Yes.

cinder mountain
#

it's the opposite of real time - it's pausing time

gritty hinge
#

Simple as that

cinder mountain
#

that's your opinion. I think it makes the game a silly joke where you pause to macro

#

also actually makes tac pausing really strong. you can input unlimited actions to defend stuff

gritty hinge
#

So don't tactical pause. or Votekick ones who do, as it is usually done in lobbies

cinder mountain
#

pausing gives a huge gameplay advantage if you have action paused on

gritty hinge
#

where is your problem?

cinder mountain
#

my problem, as I said above, is this is RTS - not pause gaming. Real time is the game. Pause gaming is the opposite of that. It also makes pausing actually OP.

gritty hinge
#

Real time reffers to combat happening in real time thought, which as far as I'm aware is fully enforced

cinder mountain
#

Nope

gritty hinge
#

Like, i don't think your units can shoot while paused right?

cinder mountain
#

What? The whole point is we strategize and command in real time

#

as opposed to turn based games, where you pause between actions and do them that way

#

That's why people talk about "apm" because how fast you can do the right actions matters in real time games

cinder mountain
#

watching a game rn where they took a timeout to manage economy stuff and trade units

cinder mountain

Please please consider more punitive enforcement here. Cheating ruins rts

Moderators need reports to be submitted, they don't have the manpower to investigate every single time the game is paused.

There are legitimate reasons for a pause, if you feel it was done to create an advantage please submit a report.

Whatever they’re doing isn’t working is the point poo man. It’s rampant. I call them time outs rather than pauses

#

You’re around enough to know I’m right here observing this so idk the pushback

Not sure it's worth it, but what if in ranked games when someone pauses it gives them a popup with a list of valid reasons for a pause and then an 'other' button. Then you have a way of looking for discrepancies and abuses and also remind people of what is and isn't a legit reason for a pause.

#

Just because a game is 'ranked' doesn't mean we should have to be overly serious about pausing and not let people do little real life stuff when necessary and the game does have plenty of stability reasons why pauses can be useful, like a player lagging or disconnected and needing to rejoin and catch back up.

#

Also with that, if you claim the reason is because someone is afk, but it still sees them as present and giving orders, that could flag them or the pauser for potential abuse.

#

Would also give you a sense of how frequently various people pause and why, which could be handy information to have for finding abusers or identifying people that have excessive issues and disrupt games a lot.

#

And it would also instantly inform everyone else about the reason for the pause as it may not be apparent to other players.

1 week suspension is a long time my guy maybe u need to chill

cinder mountain
#

it's really not for a cheater - they just come back and cheat again

summer elm
#

Ah you're arguing for a harsher penalty, not more frequent actions?
That's a discussion that we could have for sure.
If I recall correctly the immediate bans are for the following.

Items under COC section C (most frequently death wishing)
Griefing that takes a long time to watch the replay (think large and long AI games, or lava isthmus).
Deliberate spec cheating.

I don't personally feel it rises to the same level as these other items, myself.

cinder mountain
#

I'd say if someone is found to be straight up intentionally cheating - yes it's a perma

summer elm
#

Ah, no not perma ban, just skips the warning phase.

cinder mountain
#

oh yeah no I don't agree with that - they'll just be more careful next time. so easy not to get caught spec cheating for example

#

For incorrectly pausing 1 time - I don't think that's as severe because many players don't even know it's cheating

#

So instead, that should probably carry a serious warning and escalate penalties quickly if there are clear signs of abuse

blazing sable
#

inputs while paused is a QoL feature

#

in a serious game (outside of random 8v8) turn it off

high garden

Ah right, the option that is used so rarely that people forget it exists, heh.
