The current attack command isn't effective for pursuing units 😇. Units stop when they're within firing distance , which lets fleeing enemy units escape while our chasing units halt pepeomg. However, with the close combat 🤺 command(concept), units won't stop even when they can shoot peepoWOW . They will strive to get as close as possible to the enemy unit, ensuring maximum proximity during the chase 😈

You can just give a normal move command as all units will automatically fire while moving. You can also use the set target command to prioritize specific targets over others

yeah its a problem, you cant properly use attack / fight / set target as they currently are to properly chase a specific unit without babysitting

but you dont want to change how those commands work, since they all have a useful functionality already.

what you could do is allow [M]ove command to be issued at enemy units, so then your unit would try to move in as close as possible to that enemy. Right now you just cant issue move orders to a unit, it goes to the ground below them - so if you added that, you wouldnt be losing any functionality

guard command can be issued on enemies and your units will follow them, but it's janky.

your units stay at the same distance as they would for a guard command on an ally, which means, in the case of a group of blitzes or anything with similar/less range, generally 1 will be close enough to the target to actually fire on it, while the rest will be balled up behind the 1 that's actually close enough

there's no way to give an "area guard command", so individual guard commands need to be issued on each target if there are multiple, and your pursuing units must be manually split between the targets

#

perhaps an area guard command option, combined with units following more closely/trying to surround if the guard target is an enemy, and renaming guard to "guard/pursue" or "guard/surround" would achieve desired results?

Move command being allowed to target units directly is probably a better solution than what i said, just wanted to throw it out there as an option for anyone considering implementing this

Is the same behaviour displayed if the unit is set to maneuver or roam instead of hold position?

The behaviour reported in the OP

with attack command, regardless of movestate, a unit will not attempt to go into "melee range". however, if it is already in close proximity when the command is given, it will attempt to maintain the same distance from the target.
