After the new launcher update it always installs the game under appfata with no option to change location.
It's a clean install with no previously remembered location (or at least it'snot shown in launcher)

Thanks, very curious! As you see on a fully clean system it asks for location, so it's very unusual that it doesn't do it on your, but also doesn't detect current install.

When you select the "anyone" it's also not detecting any install?
and when you uninstall, it still does it when you try to reinstall?

Selecting anyone asks for admin privileges, doesn't ask for location and starts installing same as seen for current user, only difference is it installs to C:\Program Files\Beyond-All-Reason

I was using the existing launcher I had all this time, I thought it should auto update itself to newest version.
I downloaded the newest one from BAR website and looks like this one gives the option to choose location.
I selected the same location I had BAR before and it looks like it worked

How old was your launcher?
It should have autoupdated itself to latest version as last step
I'm also confused because on the screenshot you shared it says version 1.2124.0 which is the latest version.
Or did you do:

Game was installed with older version of the current fast launcher.
I just started up the game exe as usual and it did it's autoupdate and then showed the installer.

I'm lost whatever there is any bug here or not.
there were installer updates during updates last year
when I test across the last 2 versions it seems to work fine.
I won't test across the whole combination of possible launcher versions.
The underlying thing is: If I can't reproduce, I can't fix, report upstream, do anything.

It wasn't in this installation, I got dev build in different place

The bug isn't that you can't choose location when launcher auto updates, the bug is that it doesn't properly detect your previous install location
I'm also considering entirely scraping the "per machine" install, and leaving only "per user" install (yes it will be breaking launcher update), because per machine install doesn't make sense as user login data is stored in installation directory so it's not feasible to share a single BAR install between multiple users on single machine anyway, as configs and data are quite mixed together.
This will reduce at least one level of complexity.

Yesterday I downloaded Beyond-All-Reason-1.2124.0.AppImage on a fresh Linux Mint system, my first BAR install. When running that file, it instantly installed the game to /home/username/Documents/Beyond All Reason/. No way to set installation path or even to select drive.

Yes. That's the current intended behavior on Linux.

-w
that points at the path that should be used.

I hope this is just a temp solution. an installer that can only change the install-path by reading the source code is bad horror.

Linux doesn't have a concept of installer
You run application
If you use package manager
like flatpak
then it installs in standard location
if you use system package manager, it again installs in standard locations

so far BAR is the only program that decided to be a document and install into "documents", where my tax files, work papers and whatever is.

It's neither better or worse then a lot of other programs that just dump stuff in hidden directory in home. But yes, preferably it would follow XDG Base Directory Specification
It's just how it was setup a bunch of time ago and not changed since then
The new lobby that is in development and replaces launcher will follow the specification.

Actually, --help prints this parameter also fine
so it's documented in the most "standard" location (the description could be much clearer there for sure)
