AI is most effective on land, and naval abilities are limited.

As a user, it would be great to play an AI that can handle water maps with no land bridges.

The AI should rely on hover crafts, aircraft and ships on such maps.

Technically SimpleAI works with anything as it's attempting to build one of each factories wherever it's possible...

It does work on water maps, but it needs to be optimised as it does build units and facilities that it won't need.

Changing the build restrictions for the AI to build only facilities that work on those maps would go a long way.

The next step could be to change the build order and prioritise specific units, such as torpedo planes.

Wouldn’t mind an ai that learns from players and utilizes their strategies and gameplay style. That could enable stronger ai in both the intended naval effect and the ability to switch up tactics

there used to be one for Spring that learned what you like to play with and focused on countering that in next matches...

but that's ancient times

BARbarian could technically have such self learning implemented as well since it's an unsynced AI

so if you're hosting it it could just read your data...

especially if it learns from top players

I think it's map reliant. Try Ring Atoll or Serene Caldera, the difficulty seemed much higher
