#Radeon 6700 XT hard hangs

I recently added my firs AMD card to my stable. The 6700 XT. I am now getting hard hangs at random intervals. Ctrl -alt-del doesn’t even respond. Never had a problem on my NVidia machines (3070, 1070, 2060 maxQ, 2080 TI and 1660 Mobile all work just fine.

Any known issues with the AMD cards? Any tips?

Windows 10. Intel w-2245 with 32gb ram. (Lenovo P520)

....There are now like 3? people who have posted with the same-ish issue, all with 6700XT...

There were some persistent driver issues with amd cards in the past, but they've been fixed. I don't have any issues with my 6800, for example, on the 22.5.1 drivers (which I am still using). The one thing is that I guess make sure all your overclocks are perfectly stable, if you have any. This kinda looks like it's just a problem with the 6700xt for some reason though.

#

I have the exact same issue, the only thing that works is to manually power off the pc by holding the power button. Also 6700xt. First time this happened to me was dec 20. Since then it happens ~once every 3 games I play.

Windows 10 Pro 21H2 19044.2486
Intel i7 6700k, 32GB ram

I'm on the "recommended only" branch of AMD's update policy and have auto-updates enabled. My current driver version is: Driver Version
22.20.29.10-221130a-386458C-AMD-Software-Adrenalin-Edition

I typically play with a few friends against barbarian AI's, and mostly crash within the first 10 minutes. Rejoining works fine and I've never crashed more than once per game

6600 XT, I have this same issue at random

By now I've also tried windowed mode, still crashed

Same issue here, with a RX 6600

So that means it hung on SDL_GL_SwapWindow(sdlWindows[0]);

I have not crashed ever since enforcing vsync in the gpu drivers!

verbal zephyr
#

I haven't changed anything, but haven't crashed lately

livid nacelle
#

i'll just point out that based on what i see in changelogs of some other games, BAR isn't alone with these cards having problems

Having same issue with my 6900xt. Stock clock and updated drivers. Used to be every 3rd game would hang. Now its every game within 10-20 mins. Solo or multiplayer.

outer terrace
livid nacelle
#

As i said whatever the hell is going on, BAR isn't the only one affected

#

I swear AMD is just silently trying to kill OpenGL

civic bramble
#

@runic goblet @outer terrace Do you have FreeSync enabled?

#

@verbal zephyr sorry for the pings - just asking because I've seen that pointed out as a cause for hangs recently

#

i've myself had a hang due to a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION and I do have FreeSync on

outer terrace
runic goblet
#

I don't have it enabled.

gusty yoke
#

Someone added the "known issue" badge, but is there a known work around? I'm still in the return window for this AMD junk and considering swapping for NVIDIA.

livid nacelle
#

@left halo says that 23.2.1 driver fixed lots of BAR issues for him

#

That got released today apparently?

#

Worth a shot i guess.

left halo
#

I'm on 5700xt but worth as shot for other cards

livid nacelle
#

Why did they decide to redo their OpenGL driver this much time after the last OpenGL release i have no idea

#

But it's a rough journey for everyone xD

#

Not just BAR

left halo
#

I was getting 40 fps pre 22.5, now i'm 160+

gusty yoke
#

WOW.

livid nacelle
#

There were engine updates in the meantime

#

But yea sure

left halo
#

yeah but the driver was huge

#

other opengl games saw allot of performance gain i'm assuming.

#

To iterate on that more. Lets say I started a 8v8 barbAI game. pre 22.5 I would be 120 fps just chilling at the beginning, then slowly grind to a 25-40 fps halt during big end game action. Now I can stay above 60-80 during the same intensity and usually around 220 fps just chilling at the start of a game.

#

But after 22.5 is was a stuttering mess, and that's all gone now.

peak vortex
#

This is wonderful news!

#

These are windows drivers, right?

left halo
wild knot
#

I'll give it a try just now, see if I can confirm

gusty yoke
#

Ok. I updated to 23.2.1 and I’ve connected to a large battle as spectator. Good news is it didn’t hang yet. Bad news is only 23 fps and lots of weird artifacts (white squares) in water tiles. 6700 XT on 4k

#

GPU is only 60% utilized and CPU only 26%, but I assume it has maxed one core.

#

Ok. Joined a game in progress and caught up. 163 fps and no crash. No water on this map, so unsure about the artifact I was seeing.

#

Wow, now it’s hitting 200fps. This is better than my 3070 on 2k. Glad amd fixed it.

left halo
#

Everyone knows to uninstall using DDU utility right?

#

I have yet to have graphical glitches or artifacts on the 5700xt, just frame rate and stuttering. Glad to hear you're doing better.

wild knot
#

I hate to say it but I haven't noticed any benefit for the 23.2.1 drivers compared to the 22.11.x drivers I was using just before, and I'm still getting a few minor graphical artifacts, such as weird ocean textures and wrecks are tinted purple. 22.5.1 still works best

#

Although I wasnt crashing before and I'm still not crashing, but I hope that may have been resovled for yall in the newest drivers

inner gull
#

Water can probably fixed eventually

left halo
#

Was able to play some games last night, I spoke too soon. Never had artifacts like this before 22.5.1. It's however much smoother gameplay and i'm able to play again with this.

gusty yoke
#

@left halo I had the same artifacts in water, but no crashes and good frame rates

livid nacelle
#

yeah this water glitch seems to be affecting everyone

#

what i can suggest in the meantime is switching water quality to low

inner gull
#

I'm looking for volunteers who can share their desktop so I can do online debugging of water issue. I just don't have hardware to reproduce it locally

inner gull
wild knot
#

Sure, idk what time zone you're in but if you're in europe, this weekend would probably be best, unless you want to be up at midnight looking at this lol

inner gull
#

I'm GMT+4, feel free to ping me on weekend

inner gull
wild knot
#

@inner gull the water bugs appear to be fixed with this exe, although there appears to have also been a performance regression. Still playing through a game rn to see if anything else weird comes up

inner gull
#

if I were to guess regarding the perf regression I'd say it's new AMD driver

wild knot
#

It's hard to tell, because I've only been on the post-22.5.1 drivers for a little while, and there has definitely been a performance regression since then from the drivers in general

#

I guess while we're here, the only other weird graphical glitch I've noticed is that wrecks and features are tinted purple. Not really a problem, but I thought I'd bring it up in case you're interested

wild knot
#

(that's an old problem since amd messed things up, not from the test exe you sent)

inner gull
#

Yes pink features is something else

#

I'm glad the bumpwater issue is resolved. This has been bugging me for a while.

#

BTW pink features can also be debugged online, even easier to some extent

boreal coral
#

Disabling windows Multiplane Overlay (MPO) seems to have fixed that issue for me (i am using the pro drivers).
(6800xt here)

#

i do have the water glitch like everyone else but no pimped trees

#

however i do not have the greyish lines in the fog of war. maybe that's an option i have overlooked?

wild knot
#

Well anyway, thanks for figuring that out, will be glad to see it released!

wild knot
vital hill
#

Hm i isntalled the newest AMD drivers and just got a complete freeze. So it doesnt seem to solve the problem...

#

Has anyone else the same experience? Was hoping the new drivers would solve this... 😦

clever ermine
#

I have the same issue here. Hard system lock, can only fix but hitting the reset button. Latest Windows 10 64 bit, latest AMD drivers 23.2.2 with a 6800XT. I was looking to upload the infolog.txt somewhere in #bugreports but I don't see that channel as noted on the website.

left halo
#

Have you both tried Underclocking your cards. Try 100mhz steps then 50.

#

Have you both tried uninstalling in safe mode using DDU Utility?

harsh tartan
left halo
harsh tartan
#

yes

#

you are probably within the tolerance of what can be done

#

for over/underclocking

left halo
#

You do know overclocking and underclocking is just an arbitrary number set by AMD or the board partner right. There's technically is no such thing as default clocks.

#

Or voltages

harsh tartan
#

@latent sonnet can explain it better

left halo
#

There's a reason why EVGA kingpin cards exist

#

Or AMD nitro

#

Everyone's board is different even from the same manufacturer. You may get lucky you may not. You have to play with clocks and voltages to find stability.

#

It may be a problem with bar specifically but it's still worth people trying.

#

Oh and before I forget AMD also is awful at down stepping voltages. Do this instead.

peak vortex
#

Msi afterburner literally steps voltage frequency pairs for you

left halo
#

MSI afterburner causes my the 5700xt to greenscreen, just AMD things

vital hill
#

That's not sufficient?

left halo
#

Not at all

vital hill
#

That amd cleanup utility is also not worth using ? I guess I have to try that ddu thing then

left halo
#

I would use DDU safe mode cleanup 100%

vital hill
#

Okay will try that. Thanks

wild knot
#

These days I undervolt, underpower, and underclock my card for the most part, but I stability test my changes pretty well, and I don't have the crashing problem, and never did.

#

Although I did once corrupt my gpu drivers with an unstable curve optimizer set, and that did require DDU to fix

vital hill
#

Hm, I DDUed, reinstalled the drivers, downvolted my GPU. It is still crashing in every game after like 5 Minutes. Guess I will have to put BAR aside until AMD gets this fixed

left halo
boreal coral
#

@vital hill @clever ermine Disable windows Multiplane Overlay (MPO)

#

no freeze since i have done that

#

and IF it still does it for some reason, use the pro drivers.

#

you ll still have to disable MPO even with the pro drivers tho

#

if others can confirm doing that solve the random freeze issue (it did for me so i am 99% sure it will for others with amd card)
this should be pinned somewhere as a solution for AMD cards owners

vital hill
#

@boreal coralI just did that MPO thing, feels like I could play some additional minutes, but still freezing...

#

will try pro drivers next

left halo
#

type 1750 in p1 frequency

#

hit enter

#

type 990 in p1 voltage hit enter

#

if it still freezes, come down on the frequency 50mhz and retest

vital hill
#

okay will try that. But doesnt that mean, the GPU will use much more power during lower load periods?

#

thanks!

left halo
#

not really

vital hill
#

Ok last 2 Matches without any freezes

#

will try again tomorrow, but looks very good. Thanks alot!

#

strange... when i click the advanced options, i see these sliders...

#

but i have to admit, that i am a complete clocking noob

left halo
vital hill
#

I still have crashes apparently

#

I will keep lowering the mhz

boreal coral
#

those are my adrenaline settings,
with pro drivers
and MPO disabled.
no freeze since.

i did overclock and underclock a bit

vital hill
#

Ok maybe it is an issue with rx5700 cards then

#

I can't fix it. Will wait for AMD

left halo
#

If it only happens in BAR, don't count on AMD fixing it. You may want to send them a report on your issue.

#

If any other game is crashing, you may want to check your other components, especially system memory (RAM).

#

Maybe an interesting side fact: freeze never happens when speccing

knotty geyser
#

23.3.1 driver dropped yesterday, so far so good! 😎

boreal coral
#

nice

boreal coral
#

just a tip. it seems like the driver faileure is more prone to happen when wattman isn't open (the amd adrenaline software). if i don't have it open it freeze 100% of the time after some time gaming. but if it is opened, i just did a big 2H session without freeze...

it is really wierd. but just in case, for those who still get the freeze, try and play with the adrenaline software open.
(oh and also disable MPO just in case.)

I just played 2 games without problems. Don't want to celebrate yet, but looks good 😋
