#Crazy Additional Game Modes

It occurs to me that the engine, maps, units and mechanics of BAR have done most of the work in laying down the components for many more games and victory conditions. So I thought I'd start a thread for suggestions for as many vanilla, wild or whacky ones that could possibly be implemented or modded in 🙂

#

Frozen synapse mode: inspired by the tactical game frozen synapse. Game automatically pauses to accept commands. When all players have entered their commands and mark ready (or a timer runs out), the game unpauses and runs the simulation for a set amount of time (during which, no commands are accepted). After the simulation runs, the game pauses again ready to accept the next round of commands. The cycle continues until the game ends.

#

Red Light/Green Light: a variation on frozen synapse mode. instead of pausing and unpausing, commands are only accepted during set intervals (green lights). During red lights, the simulation runs, but no commands are accepted.

#

not easy but doable

#

the one with a timer would be a problem because the only synchronized timer we have is game sim frames

simple thicket
#

equal resource mode: instead of mexes or power plants or resource storage, resources are delivered at either a fixed rate, fixed amount or delivered at predetermined time periods. the game is purely about choosing where to spend those resources, and how one manages units one builds with those resources.

Atomic BAR:
Every unit now explodes on death with the same force as a dying commander

simple thicket
#

territory mode: winner is the first team to control X/% of mex points on the map.

simple thicket
# wise dock Atomic BAR: Every unit now explodes on death with the same force as a dying comm...

oooh, somehow that's made me go mad and inspired me to create...
PAWN BOWLS: both commanders start and must stay in a given area, they can't harm each other and a round goes for a set time limit. There are a set number of indestructible pawns in the game area, and a scoring area. The player cannot control any of the pawns, but can only move them by launching them with explosions. the winner of the round is the team with the closest N pawns to the scoring are within a given round. game goes for an agreed upon number of rounds.

capture the flag: the classic strategy game since... forever. each team has a flag. the goal of the game is to carry your opponent's flag back to your own.

sharp basalt
#

this reminds me i should improve the Control mode

#

somehow

simple thicket
# hardy crescent now this one is interesting.

As @sharp basalt said, I was kinda thinking it'd be comparatively easy to implement. I was reminded of some older strategy games like "myth: the fallen lords", or even some of the scenarios where economy is just largely taken out and its just about relative units and strategic formations, efficiency, movement, scouting etc. needless to say, BAR already has a great line-up in terms of both units and mechanics that would work with this.

Kings of industry: winner is the first team to produce/store a certain amount of resources

#

conspicuous consumption variant: winner is the first team to waste/overflow a certain amount of resources... under the assumption they aren't killed first.

Cat n Mouse from atarcraft would be the best ganemode ever lol

#

Freakers could be mice

#

The cat could be a modified tsar with low damage and range and increased speed

#

Or rezzer wars, where each player only spawns with 3 rezzers and there's a huge field of wrecks, goal is to revive an army quickly and micro to keep them alive

sterile prism

Ricochet tennis commander hides on a hill behind many shields, each team has a bunch of berthas and tries to bounce shots off Sheila's to kill com

Rumble Mode: Each team at random intervals of time with get a random enhancement until the next shuffle happens. Enhancements could be anything from every unit you have generates 1 power to every unit explodes

simple thicket
simple thicket
#

neural-degeneration: building a unit/structure causes you to forget how to build it for X minutes

#

we're all individuals: only allowed to have 1 of everything at a time

#

prop-hunt: commanders are replaced with random models/units?

sterile prism
#

and we are hiding from 1 person thats the rezzer

#

lmao

#

randomly generated wreck field

simple thicket

simple thicket
#

DIPLOMACY FFA!: the commander and any structures you manage to build are yours. HOWEVER, you can only produce units belonging to other players, so you're going to have to negotiate. end goal is still the destruction of all other players. can vote to share victory by universal agreement of surviving players.

sterile prism
#

Could do diplo like starcrafts diploma infinity, you start out as a country that has a unique unit for that country, and you take over cities (in Europe) and each city gives you extra money

#

Taking other nations capitals also gives you access to build their unique unit

#

But thered need to be neutral structures that basically made expansion costly

#

So in the early game you just do certain nations expansions, and in the late game you meet other players and battle

Gamemode where solar and wind and fus is disabled, only geo and small puddles for tidal exist

empty narwhal
#

Game mode where each commander gets a handful of randomly selected units that they can only build including buildings (Games will not be fair)

sustainable eco mode/ there is no planet B: simply sets a maximum amount of resources that any player can earn per second

elfin dune
#

Phantom mode is a big hit with the FAF community.
game mode is a secret team game how ever 2 on your team are phantoms, they have 2x eco. No one knows who is who not even the phantoms know each other.
every X mins a player gets revealed. Last team alive wins.
(theres more to it but thats a quick explination)

TIL cant do map specific gadgets as per design choice so most of these ideas not possible sadly

FORTRESS MODE

Essentially Ruins but covering the entire map, normal start, but ruins are in excess and spawn everything, can be pvp with balanced spawns or pve mode with random non balanced spawns

Lots of ideas ive had with this concept

Ruins has alot of potential to become many gamemodes

As well as having preset builds for pvp or pve like spawning with tons of eco or spawning with a very well defended base per faction tiers 1-3

Infinite Paintball Mode. Should be easy to implement
Every Unit or building you kill is instantly team swapped with full HP Or half hp for fairer fights.
Making battles a crazy tug of war. No units ever really die and base raids take on a new meaning.
only way to really kill a unit or building is to reclaim it or dgun it.
-------------|
EXP Control mode settings Literally all of these, id almost pay you to add it
You have Control mode and i even got to play it in pvp, its fun enough
, but someone said that you should be able to change the settings alot more. Make custom Startboxes, less or more points. like a king of hill mode, or 3 point domination. Change size of the control points.

Control points give metal and energy but what if they gave random units as well?
Like chess mode but with basebuilding still added
certain control points give tiers of units 1-3 every minute or by setting.
The more points you have the more units that spawn overtime.

Scav Beacon or Raptor hive drops.

People already have started doing pvp raptors and scavs because they want this but it means you have to play an entire scav or raptor game, this would be the compromise,
Not Completely scav mode, just the random beacon settings, Adding in random ai in a certain part of the map tiers 1-3. Kind of like ruins, but with enemies.

  1. Some variation of Tower Defence
  2. Tumbleweed Bowling
  3. Ration Mode: No resource income but a large starting pool you have to carefully spend (the current cap of 10000 prevents this) With random crate drops to prevent a stalemate
  4. Plasma Shield Pinball with respawning units that give points when destroyed

Please don't ping the admins and moderators unless it's important (this doesn't count)

# latent panther Thought it was allowed

well it's not a 'felony' but admins/moderators already have a pretty full agenda, so bother them only for really big/important things please, so they can do most of their magic in a focused way

simple thicket
#

Call in the admins!: beacons drop randomly around the battlefield and decay after a minute or two. if a player captures a beacon, an epic unit with a predefined lifespan timer and displayed name label matching members of the core development team is teleported in under the player's control. when the lifespan timer runs out, the epic unit either self- destructs or goes rogue.

Defcon, each team has randomly placed nuke launchers and needs to use a combination of radar bots and grunts to find other nuke launchers. This is so that when launch period comes, your nukes know where to aim and can strike first

simple thicket
#

Have people played the game!

#

We've got the building blocks: with players getting a set stock of nuke silos, anti-nukes, air defense, radar, planes, subs, navy.

sharp basalt

oh Defcon... never played but heard about it

tulip hound
#

Not a lot of games instill true fear

young ferry
#

defcon really cool concept, also really cool developers

#

though the game eventually did not capture me and after like 10-20 games i almost never touched it again 😭

tulip hound
#

It’s an experience

#

One time is legit enough to let it sink in

hardy crescent
#

Oh i used to play this a lot. Seeing this concept applied to bar would make it very interesting.

Fortnite mode: The edges of the map continually shrink towards middle, unpredictably, forcing commanders inwards. Have to constantly build/reclaim things to try to have a solid enough force to survive.

sharp basalt
#

it's funny because we have pretty much everything you'd need for a battle royale kind of gamemode except the shrinking map

hardy crescent
west river
#

Really, you could test that even just by spawning a big circular armada of Dragons that move really slowly towards the center of the map.

elfin dune
#

would be map specific though

sharp basalt
#

That wouldn't lead to random place on the map like Battle Royales do though

elfin dune
#

true but would give the edges slowly closing in

mental topaz
#

There is fluctuating lava in the Forge map. Could this be evened out and slowed down enough to create the effect of the usable safe land shrinking? Using a map with a very wide curve

sterile prism
#

Game could end in draw tho with 2 commanders flying in transports and no landa to land in lol

young ferry
#

add: shoot from transport 🙂

wet cave
#

There is a random map generator. Use this to make random heights and you’ll have non centred receding territory

#

In combination with rising lava. However flying to the edge of the map won’t kill you

crystal pier
#

The problem I see with rising lava is that everyone late game would just go air

#

Also most people would just base high up so as to not have it effect them till the last 5 minutes

#

Meaning you wouldn't really have to move as you would with a shrinking circle

BAR: The RPG. Give the comm and any unit near the comm (aka, "The Party") extra experience. A lot of extra experience.

Prepare Defenses Mode: Game starts with no-rush boxes in place, but you can't build any combat units until AFTER no-rush ends; Players can build static defenses during this time, but not an army. This incentivizes building robust defensive lines that might be impractical in a normal match, and then having enemies siege them.

earnest tapir
#

Full war mode:
Start with 5 Min of Grace period, have a fixed amount of metal and energy available, place immediately all the units you need.
When the game start you can only fight, and can't build nothing.

Complete pipe dream, but I'd love for Evocom to go even farther, and make them like moba heroes with 4 abilities, and the ability to buy upgrades from factories. Then we can have 8v8s with 3 players playing normal bar, and 5 players playing it like a moba. Would be a hilarious mix
