Super annoying time-suck that happens hundreds of times a week is when I drag something into my hierarchy, instead of appearing where I have the cursor and get the indicator that shows the editor knows I am there with an object, objects dragged in will appear down at the bottom of whatever folder I'm in. My hierarchies are kept super organized, so every time I drag something into the hierarchy, I have to re-grab it and position it where it's supposed to be before I continue. This is not conducive to a smooth workflow, please fix!
#Feature Request: Objects dragged into hierarchy go where placed instead of appearing at bottom

see the arrow on the blue line
make it point up when not directly below the heirarchy parent
It doesn't matter which direction you make it point when you are pulling things into the hierarchy: they go to the bottom. That only works when the object is already in the hierarchy and you are repositioning it.
hmm guess im remembering wrong then, My b!
It's also possible that this only happens in the stand-alone version of Core and you're using the version in Steam or whatever platform it's on now 🤷 I am using the stand-alone version.
im on the epic one ya, but i dont think thatd change editor behavior. I think i'm simply remembering incorrectly. its the most plausible
Huh i never noticed this before but you're right it always becomes the last thing in the heirarchy
Well i've fixed it for drag and drop
Okay open question - If I duplicate and the objects that have the same parent, would you expect them to all be siblings next to each other - or each of them be 'after' the sibling they duplicated themselves from
so, not fully sure what your asking, so ill just write out what i expect
parent
<-- should appear here
-Child - Ctrl - W to make duplicate
--Childrens
<-- or should appear here
-Child
--Childrens
seems right
My hope was for if you have a massive hierarchy and you have some trees half way down, if you duplicate a tree later on it should just show under the one you've just duplicated from
That seems right but if you have eg cube under default floor (which is outside of groups in your image example) when you duplicate default floor it should go under itself and not to the bottom
I think what you described is what it does (after my code change)
Awesome thank you )
100% I would want them to be after, not appear down at the bottom. This causes another time suck for organization, and forces me to create way more folders than I would need to so that I can work faster, to keep sections organized.
This is most excellent news! It will greatly improve productivity for creators.
Btw this feature/fix won't be in the next patch (I submitted it too late) but will be in the patch after
Ty for posting this, this has always been a pet peeve of mine. @mortal trench I'm so glad it's getting patched🙏 thank you so much.
Uhm, sorry, but I have the opposite opinion here 😄
have complex tree > multiselect objects to form a new group > get the pasted objects placed bottom or selected objects parent
yet STRG + W i do not use, so might be a different workflow here
But manually drag and and drop into hierarchy, yes, place where dropped
If you paste all the objects go below the last selected object do it's not much different - and they're selected for you so you can make a group. Duplication is different because each selected object is duplicated into the same group that it was duplicated from whereas paste puts all the 'roots' in the same group as the single selected object. The only different now is it uses the sibling index
Oh man, the paste behavior is something that always bugged me. When I have a group/folder selected, I expect paste to make the new copies children of the selected group/folder (like how it works when pasting files in Windows), instead of siblings. Don't know if others have the same expectation. I should probably make a new post about this—and probably about a few other issues I have with the Core Editor.
Well it will paste them below the group not in the group but at least it's easy to drag from below into the group instead of having to scroll up and find it
It will paste in the group if you select an object in the group before you paste.
We could add a paste and paste into - I wonder if any other programs with a hierarchy (eg. Unity, Unreal) have functionality like this though ; mostly curious what a shortcut key would be : control shift v maybe?
Yeah, my issue was pasting objects into newly-created groups/folders. I forgot what I was doing that made me keep encountering that situation. Maybe it was pasting into different network context groups.
