I mean just using the lasso tool to make a hand made crop, then deleting it out.
Then it is not a crop, but a lasso selection. If you don’t use the correct terminology, you risk misunderstanding and getting wrong answers, like in this case.
Glad that you are all set! Btw, did you know you could temporarily switch to the polygon lasso if you hold alt as you draw? (And to draw a freehand section with the polygonal lasso…)
Yes, that's the reason you didn't find anything by a Google search, you didn't want to crop, but select and cut.
Crop means using the crop tool, the one below
Which is probably even easier with a mouse!
