#Need help with airbrushing technique
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Airbrushes were (are!) still dignified spray paint machines so you need those specks of paint around the edges that will look like they are making things blurry when you look at it from a distance.
The effect (depending on the setting of the nozzle) would be that of a very neat streak of paint, surrounded by a cloud of small drops of paint
As usual if pays to get a reference of the real life effect

So I don't think it can be achieved with a standard brush, however you play with the settings
Actually you can have spray paint brushes avaiable with Photoshop (you might have to download them separately here: https://www.adobe.com/uk/products/photoshop/brushes.html)
You will probably have to tweak their settings so that the cloud is thinner
those are very solid, would you recommend using some sort of mask for each individual streak/cloud like a real airbrush?
I would suggest reducing the scatter and increasing th count
I actually would, particularly for small hard edge areas
You can play with the Quick mask mode (so it actually will remind you of the Rubylith/Frisket film that was used) to create selections without necessarily go the full mask more (1 mask = one layer, so it could add up very rapidly)
ah yeah lol this is already a big project with many layers, thank you so much for your help! downloading brushes now
Shop/look around for brushes. There are actually lots besides the link I shared that are offered for free or for very little. Good places are for example

i was youtube searching for some free airbrushes a few months ago, and some of the results were less than spectacular haha
ill take a look at all these though! these all look very high quality
Yes there is a lot to try and reject!
I won't lie, you could make your own, but for spray paint, it's not as straightforward as for say, a pencil or similar
oh definitely, ive spent hours fiddling with brush settings on this project alone to no avail lmao
You can try creating one from scratch from a high quality scan. I've done that in the past, but never really achieved anything satisfactory with Spray paint (and I wish I could have!)
that would probs be a solid technique if our scanner was still here 😂 i think i might be down to the digital assets for now
everything you provided me with are incredible resources, thank you so much again
Good luck with your project!
thank you! :)
You're welcome!
@robust sail sorry to ping you and bump this old topic, but how did you get your brush to be tapered at the end? is that a pressure pen sensitivity feature? im using a mouse, but im looking into buying a tablet for this project to get a better feel and output
i know as a mouse user i can use the fade size jitter control to taper edges at least, so if there isnt another way thats more akin to that brush style then i understand
It is a pen sensitivity pressure thing
You can simulate it as you said, but it's never as natural as the pressure sensitivity (BTW, you can find cheap tablets at £/€/$ 30 and now it's a good time to have a look at the "refurbished" section on your favourite online retailers)
