Thank you @bleak fossil! The feedback really helps!
Day 2 Gradient redo
@forest aspen I read your description and discovered these are made with drinking straws. How clever. I really enjoyed your image. The colors work well together. I like the ripped paper look. Good job.
Greyscale and Colour..comments welcome.
@queen dew I prefer the the top one not only does it meet the challenge the image is more readable. I like the design and the colors you chose for the decorative elements. For me, there is too much green on the bottom one and my eyes don't have a resting point.
@sturdy vault @south adder your greyscale image tells a story. The placement of the grey on his face makes him look weather worn and tired and the grey on his jacket makes him look like he has battle. The grey and color work great in this image.
Thank you @sturdy vault

@bleak fossil Thank you Sam. My original intention was just BG color and grayscale with the yellow outer glow. But little by little, with @coral stone suggestions, I added text stroke, a bit more of the yellow scheme, with lowered opacity. Im happy you like it.

@plain sable I always have trouble imagining Ps text I see on my monitor to the written page. I cant wait to see your finished product. Im sure it will be awesome.
@coral stone Thanks for your valuable coment.

@south adder I thinks it's great!
@slow stirrup I stared and stared and stared. I cant tell if its a photograph of the bottles or if you designed them. Awesome. The subtle greyscale is cool. What would you think if you brought it up just a bit into the colored seals on the top of the bottles??
Day 3 - Greyscale and Colour
@eternal mica, like, the seal should have a bit of gray?
@slow stirrup Yes. Your greyscale is so subtle, its hard to see. I was thinking the grey over a bit of the labels would be more impactful. But as Sam always says, thats personal preference.
@slow stirrup and fade it into the color gradually
@sturdy vault thanks for your feedback, the bottom one is too greenish๐

Thank you @bronze bluff all the pictures for this challenge are mine.

@eternal mica, I gave it a try. I'm not sure I like it..
@slow stirrup then dont do it!! What YOU like is the only criteria. Its awesome
@eternal mica, thank you!

Lovely color palette @warm plume! Day 1 is looking very well balanced. I like the texture of the background and the brush strokes. The calm and peaceful vibes worked out great.
I like the subtle grayscale effect on your page, @young karma! The white stroke of the text was a nice way to make the reading comfortable. Great job with the background textures and colors as well! ๐
Very nice job @glacial minnow! I like how the style of the rainbow matches super well the font. Also, the subtle rainbow behind the text was a nice way to add repetition without making it look busy. Good job!
@kindred trellis Day 3 turned out great! I like how you masked the subject with the ellipse, it adds a nice sense of depth to the page. The textures are looking very on point as well.
Day 1-3 - Constructive criticism gladly accepted. At the risk of being corny.... Zine theme is memory "book" gift for my friends who went on trip together recently.
Great job distorting the text @ruby panther! I love how it has the same shape as the Ferris wheel, giving a nice sense of movement to the page. Also, its color is very consistent with the ones present in the background image! Well done!
@coral stone Thank you very much. I'll try to keep the vibes consistent :)

Day 4 Challenge. Here is the whole spread which includes Day two! Challenge 4 is the right side.
@void ermine You can do it a couple ways. 1 would be to export your designs as jpgs and go to File > Place and place your jpg. You can do the same with a PSD, but your file will end up larger
@sterile bane but still both ways don't work properly... I don't get to see the S or T from the word solitude completely on the "all spreads template", they remain cut. How did u manage? is it a png with transparence?
Day 2 - I'm behind!
Thanks @coral stone ๐
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @coral stone
Day 4 Is it too bright? I did print and I can still read.
Day 3 - I'm catching up!
@potent spoke I really like your page day 3 but I am wondering if it will be readable once it is printed in the zine format. The image is very serene.
PS DCC #3 Grayscale and Color
Im not sure Im doing this right, but I think I followed the template and made up Shape> Rectangle> Convert to frame and inserted the projects I made up this week. This is what I have so far.
Day 2 challenge
Day 4. One of those times hours of work didn't give the result hoped.
Does this need more? Am I using the gradients most effectively?
Not too much into the photos but I feel I understood the lesson and this will work within my zine....
@rugged iris your vegetable illustration has me laughing! i love it. the gradients are a nice touch - I might try putting the color/gradients layers under the line art layers so that the line art stays crisp. nice job so far!
Day 4 Challenge
Day 2 - behind but will catch up!
Essentials...Pg 1 & 2 combined spread
Great job with the grayscale effect @hot thicket! The contrast worked out nicely as well, making the landscape from the background with a low amount allowing it to have an atmospheric perspective, which helps to sell the effect even. It looks like there's a bit of a halo on these rocks ๐ , you can easily get rid of that by using the minimum filter. Hereโs a cool video from Jesรบs Ramirez that might help you in how to use it. Feel free to ask me if you have any questions ๐
In this tutorial, you will learn how to remove white edges or fringes from cut-outs in Photoshop!
Fringing, the white edges, or halos, around your selections, could be very distracting and could ruin a good composite.
I'm going to show you two filters designed to specificall...
This is looking beautiful @winter tinsel! I loved that you played with the out of bound effect on the spread. The colors are amazing as well!
I like the way that you blended the grayscale with the low saturated tones of the image @potent spoke! The font has a really great personality, reinforcing the quote style of the overall page. Well done!
Nice approach to the challenge @lucid plover! I like how the glitch effect is very well balanced, allowing the viewers to identify the subject very easily. Great job!
@queen dew Iโm loving the textures of all your zine pages. The yellow tones from the sun combine really well with the blues on the background. My only suggestion is just personal preference, you can increase the readability of the text Dawn break of the day by choosing a brighter tone for it. If thatโs the effect youโre going for, of course. Youโre doing a spectacular job, Paul!
@cold oyster this turned out really great. I like how the high contrast of the images enhances really well the theme of your zine. The glow and the low saturated red also adds a bit of personality to the texts as well. Cool job!
Using frames is a very nice technique, @eternal mica! Iโm really liking how your zine is coming together.
About day 4: The blue of the text and the green of the rectangles turned out into a great combination. The colors of the buildings also contrast very well to the grayscale subject in the background. Nicely done!
Lovely work @fringe sun! I like the colors of the trees and how you played with them. You did a very impressive job masking the baby on the right, especially that there are some blurred areas on the edges. My only suggestion would be that if you used a layer mask, you can apply a little bit of smoothing or even feather to the one on the left, you can use the sliders form the Select & mask workspace. It doesnโt need to be a strong effect, just a slight touch. Let me know if you need any help ๐
This is super creative @fathom holly! Loved the colors of the donuts and the fishes. The splatters were a very nice way to make the background gradient look even more interesting. Also, repeating the splatters on day 3 added a nice consistency throughout the pages. I really like how they are blending to the chair. Awesome work! ๐ฏ
For me itโs looking very nice, @sturdy vault! Looks like there are some pixelated edges on the texts. It might be a Photoshop setup. If you want it to look smooth, select the text with the Type tool, and choose Sharp on the aa icon. The aa means Anti-Alias, which is a way that Photoshop uses to smooth the text edges, creating an average of the pixels since they are little squares. ๐
Thereโs no macro photography without a bee, right, @sweet fern? hah
Great photo as always, Ron! I like how your zine is coming together. ๐
You did an awesome work with the colors @quiet compass! I like how they preserved the texture on the subject without making it look flat. I believe you have a typo on the first โeโ if you meant to write gradient. ๐
These colors turned out great @untold iron, did you use a gradient for the leaves? I loved the effect that the created on the top ones. Awesome work!
@tacit condor Awesome work, EMx! Loved the diagonal lines pattern on the background and how it matches the other elements of the page really nicely. The overlap between the subject and the text is looking great as well. Did you use a brush to create the effect on her feet? Well done! ๐
Sometimes taking breaks is a very helpful technique to see the compositions with fresh eyes @fallow bough! The flag blending to the image is looking very nice. Hereโs an idea that you might try: you can give the policemen of the background the same color as the front, or vice versa. It will create kind of a contrast between the womanโs color and the police, enhancing the effect that there are two sides in the story. Excellent job with the layer mask, Ken!
Very nice job @gilded flame! I like how the butterflies create a nice movement on the page. My only suggestion would be to add a bit more of contrast to the hand, so it can be separated from the background. If you donโt want to adjust the colors, you can add a subtle drop shadow. Well done!
If your talking about the smoke no it was in the image
Thanks for sharing @tacit condor, you did a really great job masking it ๐
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @tacit condor
Thanks
Really like how the shapes are blending to the images on the bottom corners @loud mist! My only suggestion would be to brighten the colors of โLady Fernโ, just to pop a little more from the background, right now, the text seems to be catching more attention that the plantโs name. If thatโs the effect youโre going for, of course. Good job!
Super cool work @arctic rover! I like the Olive Oil bottle overlapping the text. My only suggestion would be to apply the same effect that you did to the knives, salt, ginger... to the wine glass as well, this will make it look more consistent throughout the spread. Great job as always, Jude! ๐
@coral stone Thank you for your comments. Iโm getting more comfortable and my confidence is growing.

Day 3. I'm catching up, slowly.
@coral stone Thanks. I printed out the zine, folded it, clipped it. It's pretty cool. Seeing it in hard copy, I went back and tweaked a couple of my images. I wish my Day 4 could have been a full size image. Having to fit within the parameters of the zine forced me to shrink the building images down so much.

Hi everyone, this is my challenge #4! I love what we learned today : easyyyy life ๐
Lovely work @fringe sun!
@coral stone Thanks for the compliments. I actually had used the mask feature on both but had not applied it enough or correctly on the left one and it also had an additional mask for the blended sunshine. I reworked it to try and correct the error but I have not gone back to the beginning so Its not as "perfect" as I feel it could be, but it is better. ๐คช
Day 3: the colors are just a bit translucent(?)
Day 3 - I'm catching up!
@fathom holly I like what you did with that chair
@coral stone Thanks! I used one of the effects feature 'Exclusion' and tripled the layer to get that effect ๐ .

@young karma Really cool to be able to see the breakdown of the images you used here! I like the sort of realistic elements into illustrated elements transition you did with this challenge. I really like the textures you go in this design. The center design has a really nice color contrast too ๐
@hot thicket Very nice john, I like the clean transition between the colored and greyscale elements. The way the colored flowers sort of lead up and point to the tall rock makes for a cool effect. There's a nice visual balance in this design. Nice work!
@winter tinsel This fits the look and theme of the previous challenge very nicely. I love the amount of contrast and unified color of the text and cup/plate. They really pop nicely and fit together well. The curvature of the text is a nice effect as well!
@potent spoke Nice job on the Day 3 design! There seems to be a bit of a texture coloration effect in the background, but not sure if the umbrella is the main greyscale element? Assuming it was colored before. Either way it has a really nice contrast against the dark background, and the text mirroring that same color gives the design a nice unity. Looks good!
@queen dew I like the contrast in textures going on here! There's a nice color contrast as well with the purple and yellow. It gives the sun a nice focus. Looks good!
@eternal mica Really cool use of contrast between the greyscale and colored elements! The design has a really nice unified color scheme even with all the various colors involved. Nice balance of shapes too. Nice work ๐
@sturdy vault thanks for the inputs , hadn't thought of the print part at all!

Challenge 4. Travel zine.
Beautiful photo @ruby panther! I'm a big fan of its color grading and the frame behind the text matches really well the architecture style of the page. My only suggestion would be to reduce the tracking (space between the letters) of the word, so each letter will be able to connect to the ones next to it, since this is a script font ๐
Thank you @coral stone Yes! of course you're right. I did not even notice that. ๐ซ

Enjoying the zine challenge so far, I'm catching up this weekend so here is day 3 challenge for my natural living zine ๐
Revisited Love it when I learn new things.
@coral stone thankyou for the text hint. I did not know about the sharpening. It is still a little pixelated but not as bad as it was. I also fixed the clipping mask on the cherry blossoms and the cup. I am much happier with it. I am grateful for individuals like you who are willing to help. Thanks again.

Lovely work @leaden depot! The text pattern on the background and the way that you masked the edges of the image turned out into a very interesting look for the page. Awesome job!
Beautiful colors @fair berry! I like the asymmetric shapes you added to the shapes behind the texts and the overlap you did between them and the flowers! The textures as looking very nice as well!
@quiet compass that is stunning! very powerful
@burnt marten Thank you
@neat shale it's looking great so far. I like how the assets are overlapping. Just some ideas that you might try, you can add a texture or even a subtle graphic in the background, it can be a flower, leaves... or any other according to the context the pages has.
If you don't use more than these three assets you might align them to the center of the page, just to feel even more balanced.
Taking breaks and searching for some references might be helpful as well.
I hope this helps you ๐
Awesome color palette @simple idol! I like how you chose a cyan tone for the text, also, the font adds a super cool personality to the page. Well done!
Assets used Day 4
I like the way that you placed the elements @kindred trellis! The graphic on the background and the colors remind me of that fast food combos. You can play with the grayscale using a texture, brush on the background or even on the soda bottle just to see how it turns out ๐
Great job making me hungry (again)! ๐
ooh, this is looking great @primal fulcrum! I like how the yellow text on the right looks very cohesive to the color palette of your page at the same time as it has enough contrast to stand out from the background. My only suggestion would be to reduce the size of the left text just a bit and nudge it a bit more to the right so there could be a space between it and the edges of the frame ๐
The textures on the background produced a great effect on the spread @shy bobcat! I also like the plants that you added to the frames on the right. Well done! ๐
Great job on the layer mask @bronze bluff! I like the way that you preserved the contrast of the grayscale elements. Nicely done!
@coral stone thank you so much on the feedback! for sure the finished piece is going to have matching watercolor streaks texture that will match the page next to it but as long as the colors of these flowers are looking good im all set! i just have to go fix the alignment!
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @coral stone
No problem ๐
Super cool work @compact pecan! The color palette that you chose is looking very nice, I like the red/orange tones on the trunks of the trees. My only suggestion would be to fine-tune the contrast of the red text against the green rectangles. You might reduce the saturation of the red just a bit, so it would increase the readability of the text. If you want, you might try a bright yellow tone of the trees, to keep everything consistent ๐ Well done!
Edit: I loved the edits on day 3! The color tones from the subject are looking very cohesive to the effect.
I loved the combinations of the images @vagrant rapids! Also the masking worked out really great on the blue plant. Nicely done!
๐คช
Very nice improvements @fringe sun! The edges definitely look smoother! Great job ๐

PS DCC #4 Layered Texture
Here is Day 3 - I like this technique of mixing B&W with Color in the photo. How do I apply the adjustment layers to the photo only and not to what's below? I wanted to position the leaf shape below the photo but not be affected by the adjustment layers.
Thinking 'Dark Mode' is more effective visually.

@neat shale great job. Am equally working on a 100 days poster challenge myself.
Feel free to lookup what I did anytime on my Instagram page via:
Day 4
Hoping it's okay I post this from gradients lesson, since its a few days old.
@deep lintel each challenge is 2 weeks long so as long as it is within the 2 weeks it is "current" after the two weeks you can still post but it goes under "past-challenge"
@loud mist you need to "clip" it to the photo. Then it will only effect that layer. You can right click and see clip or you can put your mouse between the two layers and alt click when you see a down arrow.
My attempt at the grayscale and color challenge. I was trying to make the mask the shape of an airplane window
@deep lintel nice image but if you want an airplane window they are rounded rectangles not elipses ๐
@eternal mica I used the grid mostly for the center that separates the the spread down the center. Then I used that trick we learned recently where I had the printer margin (since mine won't print clear to the edge). I look at my mockup to see which sides need the margin added since it is never all 4 sides. Then I make my day's image fit from that center line to the top and then out to my margin. Ignore the gray squares if you want your image to fill the "page".
I make a comp layer before bringing into the all pages template to keep file size down. Looks like I will also need to use a CR profile when all done to further unify the colors.
You are right @coral stone I needed to give the text more space. Fixed version
@fair berry I really like what you did with the colors for the Day 4 challenge! Kind of gives it a bit of a neon/black light paint look. I like the graphic elements you added along with the plants which gives it a sort of whimsical feel and balances out the composition nicely. Looks good!
@shy bobcat Looks good Pam! I like how the color gradient of the text matches the colors in the images. The background texture does a nice job of emphasizing the natural landscape theme and contrasting the photos. I like how the shrub on the top right breaks the frame, but it might be nice to push that a little further and repeat it in the design elsewhere. It might be hard to do with those images, but maybe even compositing in a seashell on the beach image that hangs out of the frame or something like that. Just a thought really. Nice job!
@simple idol Thereโs a real nice consistency between these designs with the color palette and graphic elements. I especially like the cover image in the bottom right, the balance between the graphic floral elements/text and the photo background works really nicely!
@compact pecan Really cool style and colors to this! I like the sort of surreal feel it creates. These are just minor suggestions, but I think the text and graphic shape behind it is a bit visually intense. I think itโs because theyโre both fairly bright and vivid colors and happen to be around the same value. I wonder if making the green box a little closer to the lighter yellow-green we see in the grass and in the top left of the trees, and making the text a slightly darker red, might give them an easier read and tie them a bit more into the rest of the design. That and a subtle gradient instead of a flat color on the background might make for a more natural look. Again, just subtle nitpicks, but figured Iโd mention them. Really nice design!
@primal fulcrum Very nice Sig! I like the simple color scheme in this, and the mix of textures seems to give the image a nice balance. My only nitpick is that the text on the right doesn't read quite as easily as the text on the left. Just because it's just a textured background, and the text is kind of thin and textured itself. It still reads, but I wonder if a solid color and thicker text would be more clear. Even so, it's still readable so more of a nitpick than anything. The horizontal yellow lines break up the blues in the piece nicely!
@slow stirrup Very nice! There's some really nice contrast going on in this Day 4 image with the white text against the dark background. I really like the way you arranged the wine images too. The only suggestion I'd have would be to maybe add a bit more contrast in the glass of wine to act as a bit of a focal point. The way you usually see some value different in a glass of wine, how it has a little "glow" where the light passes through. It might add some nice visual balance to the image. Something like you see in this photo. I might use a color dodge or screen layer with a soft round brush to add this in manually if need be. Or just select and mask it from a photo. Just a thought. Nice work!
day 1 design
Starting late
day 2
@bleak fossil, is this better?
@slow stirrup Oooh, very nice. I actually meant something more like this with the lighting coming through the center. But I think that works too, it kind of emphasizes that side lighting. Either way it adds some nice contrast, so I think both work.
@bleak fossil, I understood what you wanted, but in this page, it seems that the light is coming from the sides, so I wasn't sure how a "center light" would look.. Is there a way to create a light like this? since the original doesn't have that, or should I choose a different image?
@slow stirrup Yeah, not sure how it would realistically look, I imagine light might pass through the glass and bounce around and diffuse in the wine, causing some illumination, but I usually just go for whatever looks best. It's really up to you and what you think looks good. In terms of adding the inner glow, I use a color dodge or screen layer with a soft round brush for that effect usually. You can turn the flow down quite a bit if you're using a mouse for more gradual precision when adding the effect. If I want to add any more "shadow" and darken an around more, like around the edges of a glass, I use a multiply layer. I also finished it off with a normal layer, by color picking the glow color and painting over it a bit to add some opaqueness, so the background was a little less visible.
Alternatively you could also composite another photo in there that has that effect already, even if it's just the center "glow" portion of the glass. Just depending on which results you like better.
@bleak fossil I'll give it try, and see how it goes. Thanks a lot!

@quiet compass We all start somewhere! Stick with the Daily Challenges - they are an amazing way to build up your skills. Super supportive community!
@quiet compass, I agree with @arctic rover. Even if you don't post it, or if it's not related to the theme, at least you'll get to practice.
@quiet compass I agree with @arctic rover as well, we all started out somewhere, for me I was a little afraid to post but I did and got good feedback. When I started I used the asset provided and did exactly what was done in the stream, you can watch it as many time as needed to get the project done. Hang in there!
Trying to catch up! Here is the day 2 and 4 spread.
I've been all over the map with the day 3 challenge, I didn't really have a plan on the flow if this in the beginning but have a better idea now
Day 4 Entry. Could do with some inputs on how to better select cat to keep the softness of fur and also how to select whiskers. Not sure how the images became grey once clipped together though each a different colour overlays. Thanks !
Day 4 - Layered Texture
Here is my effort for the Day 4 multicolor challenge. The shape is from Day 2, gradients that I am carrying over to each page as a unifying feature.
Falling behind, zine day 2, catching up ASAP :-)
Go zines ! o/
@small swift Very cool! I really like the texture on the design on the right. Not sure if one is a cover and the other is the back, but the left one definitely reads as the main cover with the higher levels of contrast. Nice work with the graphic shapes, they're looking good!
@loud mist Nice balance of shapes here with the colored areas of the plant leaves. The colored portion in the bottom right definitely helps distinguish it as a separate graphic element. The unifying feature idea is a good idea, definitely helps to have some sort of motif tying the designs together. Nice work!
@buoyant nova Looking good Susan! I like how you combined these flowering into a single large shape compositionally, but the different colors still give them a certain level of smaller shapes within it. The colors look good together too, nice job!
@potent spoke Really nice job overlaying the different images! Thereโs a nice visual balance to them. I think your best bet to maintain the softness of the fur is to use the Refine Edge Brush tool after your initial selection which is great about keeping a soft edge on complex forms. If you lost the color through those particular blend modes you could always use the selection of the existing masks or use an adjustment layer to add some color through something like color balance or hue/saturation layers. Hopefully that all makes sense. Let me know if you need me to clarify anything. The textures are looking good too!
@plain sable Looking good, thereโs a nice balance to the design. And a nice unity to all these pages. Nice work ๐
@flint lintel Really great use of shapes and textures on the left design! Thereโs a nice separate of the different sections but they still all read together nicely as a cohesive design. The yellow glow/stroke around the blue shapes on the right side add some nice contrast. I wonder if making the background ever so slightly darker might give that glow a bit of a stronger read, depend on how much contrast youโre going for of course. Nicely done on these!
Thanks @bleak fossil it's been a journey and the journey has seemed to changes every time I add a new page ๐

@bleak fossil Thank you for your feedback it was most appreciated. I have an accounting background and therefore like everything to be neat and tidy, which doesn't help creativity. Is this better or still too stiff.

@shy bobcat I like it! Personally I always like to repeat design elements or motifs if I use any to really unify the design. I think it looks good and mirrors the shrub nicely ๐

@quiet compass- this is really beautiful!!
@bleak fossil thank you Sam, it actually is day 2 of the challenge so that is the inside for the zine, one on the right is meant for day 4 if I remember correctly, front/back cover was designed on day 1, its in complementary color of violet ish :-)
I'm falling behind a bit but hopefully will catch up before the challenge ends

@shy bobcat I too, have a problem with neat and tidy. I am very left brained and have to work on flowy stuff. I like to say I am left brained wanting to be right brain.
DCC 3 Grayscale & Color
My spread so far. I am thinking I may have to move some pages around in the end.
@primal fulcrum My only nitpick is that the text on the right doesn't read quite as easily as the text on the left. the text is kind of thin and textured itself.
@bleak fossil yeah it is a bit on the thin side. I have a few of the new colored fonts and never used them before. This one happened to be in the right color so I thought I would give it a try. It looks like it is the only one in my list. I'll have to figure out how to load the others.
Changes to Day 4. Decided to not use effect on protester to make her stand out.
great job @quiet compass

@plain sable I had the same problem. I stuck with my theme and learned all kinds of things about what you CANNOT do to get this effect! ๐
This effect really didn't work with my theme although it was useful for learning what can and cannot be done! My spaghetti looks like its on foam core instead of cutout. Will practice on something a bit more like Kathleen's example.

@slow stirrup Been loving and following your zine challenge! So curious how you made out with the cutout. Food and cutouts weren't great together!

Day #5 - Thoughts on the cut out colour please.
@hot thicket you did a great job masking the leaves and the flowers, John! Loved the way that the colors are matching as well!
Lovely work @rocky reef. The pastel colors worked out great. Also, the text on a path was a great way to create a โframeโ for the composition. My only suggestion and that is totally personal preference, would be to make the Summertime as the same color as the other words, or turn the โBracingโ yellow. I think the second choice would be great to emphasize the difference from the other areas since they have already a space separating them ๐ If you see that the yellow words don't have enough contrast, you can always decrease its brightness ๐
@winter tinsel I loved the contrast between the colors and the grayscale! My only suggestion is that, if itโs possible, move the computers a little bit more to the right, the same with the body copy, so youโll have a nice space between the text and the page left edge ๐
@tacit condor another great job! Iโm a big fan of the color palette that you are using. Just a point of feedback, you might decrease the brightness of the background just a bit, letting the data from the bottom area to have more contrast against it. Or you might apply a very subtle drop shadow, just to be read more easily. Well done with the Pop-Up effect!
The cutout effect turned out really great in your work @plain sable! I loved how smooth the edges are looking without any inconsistency on the mask. The shadows and the background are looking very good. Also, you did a great job on text placement on your vote zine, I really like how the spread feels very balanced because the texts arenโt occupying any crucial area of the background image allowing it to deliver all the information needed. This is totally optional but if you want, you might increase the quote's/title size just a bit more, right now the body text feels a little bigger than it. That, of course, depends on what you want the viewers to see first. Awesome work!
Super cute work @fringe sun! Great improvements in the masking process! I loved the way you masked the grass and the wall. If you want, you can apply a little bit of blur the grass near the wall, this will help you to sell even more the effect because the areas where the kids are standing are looking a bit blurred ๐ Keep creating!
Day 5: Pop-Up Book. I really should have thought through the layout of the words before adding the shapes.
@fallow bough, great cut out effect, Ken! I really like the consistency of the low saturated tones, I can't wait to see the whole zine when it's completed. My only suggestion would be to darken the cutout shadow just a bit more, this will add more depth to the page, increase the shadow look, and make them consistent with the low saturated tones ๐ Cool work!
Thanks @coral stone I increased the size of the quote, is it to much?
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @coral stone
@sturdy vault Great to know I have a kindred spirit and am not alone.๐
I don't think so @plain sable! It really catches my attention first now. Great job!
Beautiful spread @eternal mica! I like the way that youโre keeping consistency with the font throughout the pages. My suggestion would be to try to smooth the edges of the subject, especially on the hair area. I know this might be a challenge because of the resolution and the blur, but applying a bit of smooth or feather on the Select & Mask workspace might be enough. Also, you might move the chess pieces over the edge of the arm ๐. This is a trick to hide the cut edge without having to recreate anything ๐
@neat sparrow This is looking very cool, Anastasia. I loved the focal point effect that the arrows created, guiding the eye right to the subject. The way you played with the cutout effect adding a โmiddle layerโ made it look even more interesting. Great job!
@cold oyster I loved the way that you preserved the texture on the cutout. If you want, you might mask these areas ๐ "inside" the wheel, so the texture areas might be able to appear from it bringing more consistency since you have a drawing effect on the other background area ๐
@gilded flame, very nice use of the effect, Nadia! I like the repeated shapes you applied to the butterfly. My only suggestion would be to increase the size of the text just a bit, to make it easier to read. Nicely done! ๐
@sweet fern very nice job, Ron! Loved how the edges of the effect are looking on the cutout. My only suggestion is that if you want, you might create a new layer, with the Clone Stamp Tool (S) press alt, and pick a sample of the detailed area of the branch and then paint on the blurred areas from the top and bottom (make sure that you have Current & Below on the top bar). You can place the layer above the branch one and then clip it by pressing Ctrl+Alt+G, so it will be visible just where the branch is. If youโre unfamiliar with the Clone Stamp Tool hereโs a cool video that shows in-depth how the tool works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8Vo0_uEdUo Feel free to tag me if you need any help ๐

@heavy ruin this turned out great! Loved the three shapes on the elbow indicating movement! If you want, you might mask this area as well, so the background might be able to appear through it ๐ Amazing job!
@deep mango you did a fantastic job with the text wrap! I loved how the colors are blending in a subtle way to the background. Great job!

These colors are looking very nice @loud mist! My only nitpick would be to use the refine edge just a bit more on the branches, where there are some white areas remaining. I loved the way that the background has a cool sense of movement. Well done!
Iโm super excited to see your zine when you finished @arctic rover. Pretty sure it will make me hungry as well haha. If you feel stuck with the cutout effect you can try to it to the text to see how it looks. Just an idea, of course. Nicely done!
This turned out great @untold iron! I like how the shadows have a saturated tone matching really well the overall tones of the background. You did a very nice job adding a shadow to the text, this makes the reading more comfortable since the colors are similar to the background. Excellent job!
Ohh @young karma! This is awesome! Really like the gradual tones, you added to the cutout layers. This adds a great sense of depth to the page. Awesome job!
Lovely work @glacial minnow! The background is looking great, did you use a brush for that? The cutout is looking very nice as well, if you want, you might make the shadows juuuust a touch lighter, this will help to match the tones the composition has without losing the look of the shadow. Great job!
popping it out. There's a weird uneven drop shadown going on behind the monster. I adjusted the effect dials and couldn't really make it go away without getting rid of some part of it I liked even more...Not really sure it looks like he's coming out...Ok thinking about this I figured it out- when I selected it it selected those lines...hence creating it's own special drop shadow for the lines! I am ok with it, so I'm not going to redo it...right now.
@coral stone I made the tweaks. (I somehow lost the 100% opacity of the white text in the quote. I cant figure out what happened.)
@eternal mica can you send, in the #โask-a-question channel, a screenshot of you canvas with the quote layer selected?
I printed this out. It looks really really cool.
@neat sparrow This is looking very cool, Anastasia. I loved the focal point effect that the arrows created, guiding the eye right to the subject. The way you played with the cutout effect adding a โmiddle layerโ made it look even more interesting. Great job!

DCC 4 Layered Texture
@glacial minnow These feather designs are so cool on the Day 4 challenge! I love the designs and shapes of each one, and the overall shape and composition they create looks really good. Great color scheme too, it fits nicely with the rest of your own designs. The only minor nitpick is the overall design seems like it's a bit top heavy and could be lowered on the page a touch for better balance. Looking good!
@warm plume Very nice! The way you handled the colors and shapes seems to carry that minimal style and feel which I think is working well. Nice mix of the photo and graphic elements!
@hot thicket The Day 4 challenge is looking good John! Really nice work on the masking of these flowers and leaves. This is really just personal preference, but I wonder if making the state shape and text at the top the same color might give the design a slightly more cohesive feel. That and an overall levels adjustment to add a bit more contrast might give the design a nice pop. Just some ideas. Nice work on the color changes for the flowers!
@rocky reef Loving the colors in the Day 2 design! Really cool subdued sort of retro California feel to them. Really great balance with the graphic shapes too, the way the dragonfly breaks the frame is a great touch. Really loving the color effect on the Day 3 challenge as well, it fits nicely with Day 2!
@sturdy vault Looking good! I like the consistent use of the red accent color to unify the various designs. Nicely done!
@fallow bough Very nice, it definitely gives her a lot of contrast and makes her a powerful focal point. There's a nice visual hierarchy in the contrast overall between the protester, police, and background. Makes for a nice 1-2-3 read. I wonder if decreasing the contrast in the background buildings, or even giving them a slightly out of focus blur could push that even further. Since currently the dark windows against the light building compete a bit with the dark tones/contrast of the police at the moment. It might make that 1-2-3 read even stronger. Nice job on the masking effect with the overlaid flag as well!
@winter tinsel Nice use of colors and shapes in your Day 4 challenge! It adds some nice interest to separate the computers. The background texture does a nice job of separating them as well. I like the orange color you carried over from some of the other designs. Nice work!
@tacit condor Really cool to see this effect applied to a pixel art style! Nice work on the shadow effect. I think it could be interesting to darken down the whole punched out areas a bit to separate them from the rest of the background, in addition to the current shadow to have. It might give them a bit stronger of a graphic read and break up the background nicely. Really nice contrast with the text and character against the textured background!
@lucid plover Really nice compositing work on this Day 5 image! I especially like the lighting and color shift between the two halves of her body in and out of the TV. A couple suggestions I would have would be to apply an iris blur to the floor so that it gets blurry near the blurred feet on the right side but fades into focus as it moves to the left to make the focus of the camera look consistent between all the different elements in the scene. It might also be nice to soften the edge of her hair hanging near the ground to not have such a hard edge, but match the slight softness of the top part of her hair in the light. Just some ideas. Nice work!
@plain sable Ooh, great effect! Really nice work with the shadows. The way the punched out part isn't textured and is a bit darker makes for an excellent contrast against the textured background to really strengthen the effect. Great depth in this design, nicely done!
thank you for your suggestion @bleak fossil
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @bleak fossil
@rocky reef Really liking the style of these images! It gives them a nice consistency together. My only thought is the background is a bit light and similar in value to the design elements. I wonder if a slightly darker background would give them a stronger graphic read and contrast. Maybe even a gradient so you could control the background a bit more and make it darker at the bottom and lighter up top to help the white pot read a bit more. Nice masking with the orange ring around the plants, cool effect!
@fallow bough The deeper shadow on the cutout effect helps I think. Though I'd be curious to see what the background of the cutout looks like darkened down overall. I think making the cutout darker than the page it's on really helps add that sense of depth like a deeper layer is being reached. Might be worthwhile to give that a shot just to see how it compares. Nice job!
@forest aspen That's good to hear, always a good thing when a challenge sparks different ideas! This is a nice effect to match the paper tear texture you have going. I think the effect looks good, but it might help strengthen it if you make the effect less soft and gradual, and give it a slightly shorter and harder shadow edge. I think you could also go even a little darker in the shadow tone. I think those two adjustments might help make the effect even stronger and add some depth. The design is looking good!
@urban berry Nice effect here, it really helps give the person some nice contrast and focus. I wonder if a subtle paper texture or background like your cover image instead of white could be a nice element to tie it in to that origami theme. Just a thought. Looks good!
@Valdair Leonardo do you mean lightening the shadows over all or just the cut out section? Thanks
Thanks @SamPetersonArt for the feedback

@bleak fossil Good suggestion. As well as giving a sense of depth, it helped make the sign pop out. The lighter cutout luma was too close to sign's before.
The hard part is blending the two sides. Tomorrow, I'll try matching the right-lelt sky and ground to see if it helps.
Very nice, I think that helps the effect a lot! @fallow bough
Day 5 - Pop-up Book
@rocky kite Nice work on the cutout effect, the shadow looks good! For the text and the graphic shape behind it, it might look good to brighten up the text quite a bit so it better stands out against the dark a bit more. It might give it a stronger read. Nice job ๐
@sacred field Really cool theme and title for this Zine! I really like the playful style of the text with the cover's title. The cutout effect is looking good too, though adding a bit of shadow within it might help give it a bit more depth. Looking good!
@vagrant rapids Really excellent work on the cutout effect! The darker color and shadow give it a sense of depth and a strong graphic read. The cool colored lighting on the figure adds nicely to the fairly dream-like colors of the rest of the design. I really like the little dots in the cutout effect too, they read nicely as bubbles, and almost a sort of starry sky effect at the same time which is really interesting. Nice work!
@eternal mica Really cool Ted! It's always interesting to physically see these kinds of designs, a bit different than just seeing them on the screen. I like how all your designs seem to have the text on graphic shapes behind them, it gives the design a nice unity. Looking good!
Day 5!
@bleak fossil Thank you very much ๐
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @bleak fossil
@rugged iris Hmm, very odd, your mask and shape for the blue shapes are completely solid? Meaning you don't have any variations of grey in your mask, it's completely solid white in those areas? I also think going a bit deeper on the shadows, and/or lightening up the blue solid color a bit to get more contrast between the two colors might give it a bit more depth. It might also help to make the shadows a bit shorter so they're not completely covering the smaller shapes like the question marks. I think both those things might help give it a bit more sense of depth. Nice work on the graphics shapes in this design ๐
@deep mango That's looking really cool! Did you add the color gradients on the background wall as well? That coloration gives the image a really nice feel to it and I like how it mirrors the red from the mat she's sitting on. The white text reads really nicely against that background as well. Nice work!
@heavy ruin Really nice crisp edge on that cutout effect! The length and darkness of the shadow is working well to give it a solid sense of depth too. Looks good!
@sweet fern Nicely done, the cutout effect is adding a nice sense of depth on this design! I like how you seem to have a similar color scheme between all your designs as well, they definitely have a solid style between them ๐
@cold oyster Really nice job on the cutout effect with the cannon! The texture is a nice touch, though I'd be curious how the cutout area would look without the texture. It might strengthen the sense of depth by further separating it from the top layer as if it's a different surface underneath. Looking good!
@neat sparrow Really great job on the cutout effect! The darker color makes it a really strong graphic element and looks like darker paper/material underneath. The deep shadows add a really nice sense of dimension too. Well done!
@fringe sun Looking good with the Day 5 challenge! I love the cutout effect on that blue background. The background contrasts the grass nicely and kind of gives an effect of some sort of fun play place for kids which fits this image really well. The bright color really adds to that feeling too. My only suggestion is that it might be better to have all the shapes have a consistent level of focus with the hardness of their edges. The circle shapes are a bit blurrier which seems at odds with the sharp edges of Bodhi and Bailey's cut outs since everything else seems to have a sharp focus. Just a thought. Really cool design!
@shy bobcat Really nice contrast in textures between the background and photo elements! The cutout effect is looking really solid, though I wonder if you could increase the darkness of the shadow even more to really push that sense of depth. I'm really liking the color contrast in this!
@flint lintel Really cool design! There's a very nice read with the simple blue-yellow color scheme. Nice balance of shapes as well. My only suggestion is that I think you could add a bit more depth in your cutout effect by darkening the shadows a bit more to separate the shadow color from the background color. I think that could give it some pop. Nice job!
Thank you for the feedback @coral stone and @bleak fossil ๐ Yeah, I used a gradient overlay for the entire image and some Dissolve for the shape at the top where the title is

Day 6 next to day 3
@potent spoke Excellent job on the cutout effect! The darker color and deep shadow really gives it some great depth. I like how the shapes have a sort of hand cut effect too. My only suggestion is I feel like you could boost the light tones on the person with a levels adjustment to brighten her up just a touch. Nice work!
@sturdy vault This cut out effect turned out great! The dark short shadow really makes it look convincingly like another layer, and the break up of the texture adds to that while also separating it graphically as well. I like how you framed the image so it looks like she's reaching into the frame of another image. It adds a nice element of interest in the scene. Really nicely done!
@queen dew Cool idea for the Day 5 challenge! I like how you incorporated this into your stamp theme. The cutout effect came out very nicely. It adds some really nice depth, and the way you chose a contrast color and pattern for the layer underneath is a really nice touch. Well done ๐
@winter tinsel Really cool use of this effect! I like the level of sharpness and focus the cutout effect adds and how the hand is more in focus than the body. I'm not sure if that is the level of focus of the original photo at all, but it might look nice if the hand was sharpened up a bit to closer match the sharpness of the cutout edge. Either way, this is looking good, nice job with the shadow effect!
@south adder Really awesome image Neil! I really like how far you pushed this image, and nice work on the compositing. This is looking really solid, but I see a few tweaks that might push it a little further. I think making the edge of the billowing smoke clouds a bit softer and more of a gradual fade might look a bit more natural. I also think allowing some of the yellow grass to overlap the edge of the train tracks might look a bit more natural and add some depth, since there seems to be a hard line separating the two elements, where realistically you'd see some of the grass covering bits of the edge here and there. And lastly I think a bit of a shadow under the frame might set it in the scene a bit more. Just some thoughts. Very nice compositing work, the color and lighting is looking really nice and cohesive!

@sweet fern I love your project. The subject, the images, the color palette, the simplicity of the design. Beautiful job. I agree with you, this project turned into way more fun and was a lot more challenging than I first thought. The techniques werent complicated, but the design and layout aspects were a lot of work.
Pop up Day 5
Having fun with the Blur filters.
This is my Day 2 Challenge with gradient. I wanted to Liquify the rainbow gradient to make it look like a tie-dyed t-shirt. But I can't figure out how to do it. I'm looking for the effect of Illustrator's freeform gradient tool. I have a layer filled with the rainbow radial gradient underneath the rooster with all but the comb masked. Also, I can't seem to re-size text boxes without resizing the text. Thanks in advance for any help.

@void ermine great question! in my all-spreads template, i copy/pasted the S and T to the top of the layer stack so they would sit on top of everything else. hope that helps
@eternal mica your layout is looking SMASHING! you're right, the secret effort of this project comes with the planning/layouts. the techniques are just icing on the well-constructed cake ๐

@sterile bane Thank you so much. You have no idea how much your comment means to me. At the start of this DCC, I texted this to @coral stone "Im not sure I understand yet where @sterile bane is leading us, but Im sure she does. I guess I'll figure it out when we get there." @eternal mica we're on this creative learning train together ๐ as David Bowie once said, "I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring" ๐
@sterile bane hard to go wrong quoting David Bowie. Im following you guys wherever you go!!!๐ฏ
This is looking great @ruby panther Really like the depth created by the shadows. The seahorse and the crab shapeswere a great choice to add more context to the effect. My only suggestion would be to place the text more to the bottom area, so the word France might be able to be read easier ๐ Excellent job with the textures!
@fair berry Awesome job with the colors, Tan! I loved the way that you placed all the elements like the Creativity word moving a bit to the right allowing the butterfly's wing to have more space. The cutout effect turned out really great as well. ๐ฏ
It's taking a great form @glacial minnow ! Really like the consistencty through all the pages on your zine. Well done!
Practicing some extra cutouts to learn the technique better
@dapper badger this is looking great! Loved the way that the car has a great sense of movement because of the background and the wheels. If you want, you might get rid of the halo that the blur created on the carโs edges, (it happens because when the blur is applied, the pixels are kind of expanded). In real life there wouldnโt be these halos, so to adjust that, you can separate it from the background using the content-aware fill, and apply the blur just for the background. Hereโs a video that teaches in-depth the technique concepts. Let me know if you need any help ๐ Well done! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPp7h5ddQ3E

Day 5, my take on a Pop out Effect...comments welcome.
@south adder Very cool! Did you play with making the picture frame bigger? It took me a moment to see it...but very cool!
Very nice work @fluid wharf! I like how the text has enough contrast against the background, and the top area was a great place to position it. Cool job with the blur effect as well!
Loved playing with the blur gallery. Game changer. Maybe I should explain we have a tradition of dancing in the kitchen...
Tried a little timeline animation of the whole zine!
@sturdy vault lovely work, Pam! I loved the sense of movement that the blur created on the hand. The whole zine turned out great! I like how the pages have some different predominant colors but still, the color palette is very consistent. Awesome work!
The zine came together really great @eternal mica! I canโt wait to see it printed. Amazing work! ๐
This is the Challenge from today, followed by the zine!
@sterile bane The zine was a really fun challenge...and I learned a bunch. Can't wait to see what we'll get up to for the rest of the week!
I like how you blended the grayscale to the other tones, @bronze bluff! All of the colors are looking very cohesive in saturation values, which is a great way to unify the look of the whole page. Excellent job!
@coral stone ๐ ๐ ๐
Here is the zine!
@sweet fern the adjustments are looking awesome, Ron! You did a great job replicating the textures. The Clone Stamp tool might be tricky sometimes but the more you practice the better you get into it. Nice job masking the lizard ๐
I like how subtle the blur is looking, @rocky kite! If you want you might play with the path blur creating two paths, one from the trees on the left and other from the right, just to see how it looks ๐ Nicely done!
@fallow bough I loved how the motion blur enhanced the impactful look on the page. Well done!
Blur, the only option that made sense truly was path.
@untold iron you did a great job playing with the continuity effect throughout the pages! Your zine came together really great! ๐ฏ

@coral stone ๐ ๐ ๐
@safe linden this is great! I like that you chose the blue as a predominant color for day 6, but still preserving the Swedish context of your zine! The frames for the photos are looking great, and the blurs worked out really nicely. Awesome work!
I just saw your day 5, @bronze bluff. You did a great job replacing the window image. I like how it brought a little more โlifeโ to the photo, it creates a nice contrast for the low saturated colors.
Day 6: I used the radial blur and then masked out everything except the post-it notes so it looked like they were the only thing in motion. Seems pretty tedious but the Object Selection Tool made quick work of it.
Original Image
Very nice job, @hot thicket! I like how you masked the potato shapes to create the pop-up effect. If you want, you might darken the shadows just a bit more to enhance the cutout on the edges ๐
Haha this looks super fun @sacred field! I like how the blur created some interesting diagonal lines on the image. This is totally optional, but if you want, you might refine the smart filters mask on the edges of his head. The left and right edges seem to be blending to the background while the top is sharp. Just an idea, of course ๐
@coral stone Thanks, Valdair! I can do that! ๐๐
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @coral stone
Hi @oblique anvil, if I got your question right, is the gradient layer a Gradient Fill? If so, youโll need to convert it into smart object or rasterize it to be able to apply the liquify. If you want, you can DM me the .psd for me to take a look.
For the text, you might select the text layer, (you must select the text layer, not the text itself) and go to Type > Convert to Paragraph text. Ps will create the box where you can resize it without changing the text size.
Awesome work with day 2! The masking and the colors are looking great!
This is looking pretty nice @loud mist! I like the overlaps you made with the branch! Also, the blur technique you applied was a cool choice for the context of your zine. Well done!
I uploaded the wrong one. This is the "final" one with the wording as well.
Re-edit
I'm digging this zine so much @warm plume. I love the way that the shapes are blending and the minimalist look of the graphics ๐ฏ

My finished zine.- I'll print it tomorrow and see how it looks folded!
@sacred field Ooh very nice, glad you shared the printed result. Looks good!
@pliant geyser Really liking the consistent style and look between all these designs! The sort of neon color to all of them really ties them together. I really like the color/motion effect of the design on the bottom, second from the left. I wonder if the bottom left design could use a bit more contrast overall like the rest of them. Maybe a levels adjustment to boost the contrast a bit could help? Really nice work on these, great style!
@fallow bough The blur effect does a really great job of drawing focus to the protestor. The higher level of light and contrast on her really helps that as well. Same thing with the image of the police, but in a really dynamic way. Almost like it's a mix between a focus blur and motion blur. Nice work with these!
@fluid wharf Nice effect on the Day 6 challenge! I like the soft contrast and lighting of the background image, it gives it a sort of calm dream-like feel, and really helps the text read against it nicely. Nice work on the blur effect as well!
thank you Sam
@fringe sun I really like the bright happy colors you've been getting with all these designs. I think one issue I'm seeing in it seems like you have a clean edge on Bailey, but the blur is applied within the clean shape. Which seems to result in all the details of the figure being blurred, but the figure itself still has sharp edges. I think it might be best to blur that entire area with a directional blur or whichever one you like best, then mask off the blur in any area you don't want it. I like how you blurred the background for that one though, it definitely adds to that motion blurred effect!
@sacred field Really cool blur effect Marc! The blur really brings the focus nicely to the face, though I think fading out the blur slightly below the face might give it a more natural transition and make it appear as if the foreground is a bit more in focus than the background. Nice job!
@compact pecan I like the choice of lyrics in this one ๐ The radial blur effect seems to work really nicely with this image! Kind of makes it look like there's a whirlwind of post-it notes around him. Looking good!

@plain sable Super cool to see the printed version! Really nice contrast in the final page too. I really love the visual consistency between all your pages. This came out really nicely and has a great cohesive style to it. Loving the dynamic between the textured background and illustrated flowers for your other designs! Really great look ๐
@dapper badger Great photo for this challenge! The perspective of the camera already makes for a nice dynamic feel. I think that maybe you could push the direction of the blur towards the back a bit more so the front edge of the car is a bit more crisp, and the back starts to really show more of that directional blur. Especially towards the back wheel and end of the car on the right side of the image. The dust effect is a nice touch!
@neat shale Ooh, I really like what you did with the layering in the Day 5 design here! The paper texture really helps add to this cut out effect I think. My only suggestion is I think you could probably go even darker in the shadows with the cutout effect. It might give it a little bit more depth and dimension to sell the effect. Really great contrast in this design!
@buoyant nova Really nice contrast and pop of color with the red rooster against the green background! The cut out effect is looking really good! My only suggestion is more of a nitpick, in that the contrast/darkness of the cutout effect seems to very a bit between the shapes, with some being darker and some lighter. I think the top left and bottom right shapes seem to have the strongest sense of dimension with that effect. Perhaps evening them out among all the shapes will give it a more consistent look? Just a thought. Nicely done!
@untold iron The radial blur effect is looking really nice! I also really like the sort of surreal colors of this design. My only suggestion is that I wonder if extending the blur all the way to the edges of the image, then masking out the blur of the face a bit might create a nice focal point on the head. Though that entirely depends on the effect you're going for. Since this currently puts a bit more emphasis on the beach and makes the person more mysterious. Looks good!
@fluid wharf Really nice work on the blur for the Day 6 challenge! It gives the image a lot of motion. The only suggestion I have is that the pink flower on the ground looks noticeably sharper than the rest of the image. Perhaps unblurring the ground at the bottom (assuming it isn't blurred in the original photo) might make the foreground look more in focus and match with the flower? Just a thought. Nice work!
@sturdy vault Really clever use of this effect! Really nice controlled blur in this one, it really helps the image feel more dynamic. Nicely done!
@eternal mica Nicely done Ted, the blur also adds some nice contrast and focus towards her face. The only thing I notice is the top right of the globe is unaffected by the blur, it might look more natural to have the whole thing uniformly blurred. Nice contrast with the text and boxes behind them too!
thanks yes great suggestion I thought about that however I was going for more emphasis on the beach ๐ @bleak fossil I think that's a really neat idea if I wasn't going for a mysterious person. Maybe I can make another version of it with these new intensions instead ๐ค
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @bleak fossil
@untold iron Yeah, on second thought I was thinking it would be a shame to lose that cool colored and layered effect you have on the beach, hah. Always great how you can really control the viewer's eye with blurs and various types of contrast.
I use two ways for blurring 1st masking the object and blurring then masking the background and use another blurring ... sharp notice Sam thank you for feedback
I agree ๐ @bleak fossil thanks again
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @bleak fossil
@bleak fossil I hope this is more like it!
here before and after
@sacred field Ooh, excellent, that looks really natural now and keeps some of that nice motion!
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @bleak fossil
@bleak fossil Thanks Sam. That was intentional. I originally had the globe on the bottom, but it was hidden by the text, so the blur I applied was lost. I used the tilt/split blur to run a clear diagonal stripe across the mid 1/3 of the globe, and blur the remaining top left/lower right thirds. When I moved it to the top, the blur became more noticeable, which I thought was one of the objectives of the exercise.

Awesome colors @kindred trellis! Loved the way that you place the elements, especially the circular path for the text around the pizza. The pattern in the background worked out great for the context. Nicely done!
Lovely work @sharp hedge! I like the way that you played with the letters, and the textured font was a very nice choice for it! The overlaps and the graphics are looking on point. Well done!
Great job with the texure colors @chilly hawk! The font choice and the colors for the flowers turned out great. ๐ฏ
This turned out really cool @naive steppe Loved the overlaps you created with the fonts, the paper and the trees. @naive steppe Looking good Tasha! The texture of the Day 2 design adds some nice interest. I like the layering of the lined paper which is a nice touch. The day 3 challenge has a nice shape and color balance too. Good job!
@simple idol The cutout effect on the Day 5 challenge is looking good. I think it's a bit stronger on the person, though making the shadow a bit more even around the edge, such as the left middle side, might help strengthen that effect. For the palm tree I think it might help to make the shadow a bit shorter and sharper, as well as darker overall to really give that overlapping shape feel of the cutout effect. Nice work!
@oblique anvil These are looking good together! I like the bold colors you're using which fit nicely with the fair theme. Nice balance of shapes as well. Nice work on these!
@flint lintel That's looking great! I love the visual consistency across all the designs. I like the sort of light feel of the light blue and white color scheme. Nicely done!

@cold oyster Really nice job, this is looking good! Very nice work on the masking around the hand too, looks very clean. It could be cool to see this design applied to the cover while keeping the lighting from the original image, but I have a feeling that might be what Kathleen covers tomorrow. These are looking good!

#๐ฃcreative-challenges Day 1 Challenge - Transform Text โบ๏ธ
Really like the subtle clean up that you applied @lucid plover! Can't wait to see how itโs going to look on the next challenges ๐
You did a fantastic job with the removals @safe linden! They look very realistic. Also, I loved the
heart that you placed on the image of the back cover!
The blur is looking very nice @gilded flame! I loved the way that it made the butterfly stand out from the image. My only suggestion, and thatโs totally a personal preference, is that you might reduce the amount of blur on the flower just a touch, so some details from the front part, might be recovered. It doesnโt have to be a lot, just a subtle change ๐ Lovely colors!
Great job with the zine @loud mist! I like how you kept the font consistent throughout all the pages. The repetition of the elements like the branches and the leaves was a great help with that as well. Excellent work!
Loved how your zine came together, @queen dew! I like how the texture and the colors are looking on all of your pages. Their styles help to unify the zine very nicely. Well done!
@naive steppe Awesome work with day 4! I like how the grayscale areas make the green leaves stand out. Also, the green text was a great choice to keep the elements consistent throughout the page. Great job!
Nice work @deep mango! I like the colors and the shape that you added for the title. My only nitpick would be to increase the leading (space among the lines) of the quote. For that, you can select the text and increase the amount represented by this icon on the Properties Panel. ๐
That's a super cool approach, @plain sable! I like the way that the background is visible in the cutout area. Did you use the fill technique for that? It looks great. I like how the motion blur created kind of an abstract shadow for the flowers. If you want it to create kind of movement as a whole, consider applying a bit to the sharper flowers ๐ That, of course, is just an optional step you might try to see how it turns out.
Your zine turned out really great @fallow bough! I loved the way that it feels very cohesive, especially on the spreads. The last image with warm tones and high contrast was a nice choice to add more context and interest to the viewers. Excellent job!
Cool work @eternal mica! I really like the clean up that you made to the spread, if you want, you can use the selection tools combined to the clone stamp and refine a little bit more on the edges of the spreads, especially on the left edge, just like Kathleen did on the live stream, you can also adjust the floor area on the right near the zine using this same technique.
Nice job applying a graphic to the mockup! Perhaps you might replicate the fingers shadow on the cover just like the original one but I think new techniques about placing the graphics might be coming on the last two days ๐คซ haha
@simple idol, this is looking very nice, Biola! Iโm a big fan of the color palette that youโre using, and I like the intensity level of the green and yellow. My only suggestion would be to work on the subject mask using the Refine Edge (from the Select & Mask workspace) on the hair areas, right now the original background is showing a little bit on them, the same with the area near the arms and legs (for this one I believe that a simple selection with polygonal lasso tool might be good already). Feel free to tag me if you need any help with the adjustments. Keep it up!
Hey @dapper basin, great to see youโre back! Lovely work transforming the text! I like how it is blending to the background image. If youโre using the template, keep in mind that this is the cover and back cover spread, so it will be folded in half, be careful for the text not be split in the middle, again, just if youโre using the template ๐ Well done and I canโt wait to see more ๐
Beautiful zine @potent spoke! Loved how all of the pages came together. I like the calm sensations that they have! ๐ฏ
Thank you @coral stone
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @coral stone
Great use of the blur effect @slow stirrup. My only nitpick would be to mask the little extra wine area that looks like itโs crossing the glassโ left edges. You can easily adjust that using the Pen Tool create a selection (make sure to give the selection a little bit of feather, something like 0.5-2 pixels) and masking the extra area ๐ Let me know if you need any help ๐
@simple idol I like the shadow on the tree, have you tried something similar with the green cutout?
thanks @coral stone I applied a clipping mask to the cutout layer with the same brick background so it matched up

That's great @plain sable! Thanks for sharing ๐

The flower was two layers one with normal blending and the other overlay, I added some blur to the over lay layer
Thank you so much @coral stone Iโll work on it!

This is my Day 5 Challenge. I just couldn't do anything with the cut paper that made sense.
@lucid plover This is looking good! This would make for a nice mockup image.
Edit: Just saw the design applied to the mock up image, very cool! That sort of faded color look of the design works really well with the aged look of the book in the mock up image. Nice work ๐
@urban berry Very nice Cindy! I like the bright colors of this design. The blurred background does a nice job of brining the focus to the sharper shapes and flowers you have. It might be nice to extend the stem of the origami flower all the way to the bottom of the frame. You could probably just duplicate that part of the stem and blend them together pretty easily with the cline stamp tool. Nice work!
@peak sentinel Really nice visual consistency against all these designs! I really like the double exposure of the cover page, and the day 6 design has some really nice motion to it with that blur. Great colors in all these designs as well!
@young karma These are looking great Vickey! I really like how well the vibrant colors of your designs pop against the neutral colors of all these mock up images. The large zine image looks really nice, I like how you kept the lighting from the mock up image in your design. Very nice!
@fringe sun Very nice, these look great together! I really like the bright fun colors of them, it fits the subject matter well and gives them a nice unity. Well done!
thank you very much @bleak fossil

@fallow bough Hah, this is great Ken! Really awesome way to visualize the layout of all these designs. Really nice work putting all these together!
@queen dew I really like the way you played with the focus in this Day 6 design! The way you kept his face a bit sharper works well to draw focus to that area, though the way he is partially blurred kind of gives it the look of a motion blur but without the same effect you usually see with motion. It could be nice to add a bit more of a motion blur to the arm areas to really push that look and feeling more, if thatโs what youโre going for of course. The stamps in the foreground give this image some nice depth!
@gilded flame Great use of the blur for the Day 6 challenge! It creates some really great focus on the butterfly and gives the image a sort of depth of field effect. Really great colors too!
@naive steppe Great cohesive feel between all these designs! I really like how you repeated the yellow and green tones throughout the different designs. The texture in the title text does a nice job of matching the organic feel of all the plants. Looks great!
@rocky reef Really excellent work with the pop-up effect! The deep shadow adds some really convincing depth. The darker color and lack of texture also separates it really well from the textured background and creates some really nice graphic shapes. The yellow color in the center makes for a really nice focal point as well. This came out great ๐
@tacit condor Really nice clean work with the Mockup Prep Cover! These will make nice templates for the design, looks good!
@oblique anvil I definitely think the pop-out effect would be hard with this image for sure, since it's a design with a lot going on. Though I wonder if doing it with the pink rectangular text backing would give you an opportunity to add a graphic shape without texture and break up all the detail of the rest of the image. Though either way I like the really bold feeling of this design, it fits well with the theme ๐
@fringe sun Really nice work with the content aware fill and spot healing tool! The texture is looking pretty seamless. I think keeping the cracks and seams between the boards might be a bit more natural, though this kind of makes it look like it's on a large board, but also lessens the contrast of the background which might be nice to further the focus on the design. Nice work!
@tacit condor Really nice use of focus in the Day 6 challenge! The blur and color really draw a lot of focus to the TV, nice work!
@coral stone thanks for the feedback ๐ I've increased the spacing of the text as you suggested

Awesome improvement @simple idol ๐ฏ!
Thank you for your feedback! ๐@coral stone
@coral stone Better?? I added the shadow and cleaned up the left edge of the spread book.
Hi @kindred trellis! I like the sense of movement from Day 6, especially on the kid. My only suggestions are just some things that you might try to make the cookie's shadow more subtle and maybe position it on the bottom area to enhance the effect that it is really on the ground since the kid already gives this impression . If you feel that the background is a little "empty" you can add a subtle texture on it, just to see how it looks, keeping the consistency of the other pages, of course ๐
It looks great @eternal mica! Loved the way that the mockup feels more realistic now. Perheaps you might adjust this area on the right side of the spread with the clone stamp tool, just to remove the distraction ๐
day 6, with a haiku about challenges ๐
Here are my mockups
@simple idol looks like they're ready for some artwork! woohoo! the wooden texture you achieved on the small zine is really pretty impressive - it's difficult to achieve a realistic-ish texture with such a small wood grain. nice job!

Day 6 - Add Movement
The finished template with a Camera Raw preset applied to unify the colors
Hey Everyone! It's my first challenge in Photoshop and I'm playing a game of ketchup. Here is Day 1 completed and I'm ongoing to the next set. I wasn't able to find the complete zine template with all the pages. If you're able to, please send it right over. Love to her your feedback with what I've completed. Thanks!๐

The first try had a crooked graphic. I noticed it so I fixed it.
This is a mock up using pictures I've been shooting of the moon this month.
Day 7 and 8 ; Turns out that I did way more for the mock up prep than I needed to. Made the mock up using the template, also.
Beautiful mockup @forest aspen! Loved the way that you brought consistency through the background colors, and how they made the texture stand out a bit more. The shadows are on point as well. Nicely done ๐
Awesome applications @sweet fern! I loved the pictures you took, also the almost hidden page on the left was a great way to sell even more the mockup! The only nitpick I have, would be to use a small size brush with hardness in 30-60% and paint on the thumb area of the layer mask, to reveal hide the blue halo, this will make the mockup look even more realistic! Let me know if you need any help. Youโre doing great, Ron!
Thanks @coral stone , I thought I got that but I guess I missed it. Iโll take care of it. One thing I noticed is that it takes a lot of attention to detail to get things right.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @coral stone
I loved the atmosphere that you created for the mockup @young karma. I loved the way that the background image preserved the original textures on No.1. If you want to add more realism to the sign on the right, you can create a drop shadow on the ground. Sam taught a super cool technique on how to do that in a mentor session a few weeks ago. The link for the replay is on the #๐จresources ๐
Loved the abstract look that the blur created, @chilly hawk! This is totally personal preference, but if you want, you might brighten the background just a bit, so the black text might be able to stand out a little more with contrast ๐ Great job!
@iron flicker awesome zine, Korni! I loved the way that you managed the contrast of the white text. The texture was a clever decision to unify the overall look of the zine and bring even more consistency. Spectacular work!
This is incredible @plain sable! I loved all of the images, the way that you showed all the spreads in just one photo made it look very interesting! If you want to get fancy with the mockup, you might add the reflection of the graphics on the ground area as well. For that, you can use the transform tools + gaussian blur. Totally an optional step, you already did a fantastic job! ๐ฏ
I loved the way that the background image from the starter filed added a super cool context to the theme of your zine, @cold oyster! Great job! ๐ฏ
Nice overlaps in this one @fallow bough! Loved how you maintained the theme of your spread on the background of the mockup. This is a great way to promote the zine giving it even more context. Well done!
Hi @wary hazel! The zine template is on a pinned message, you can access it by clicking on the pin icon on the top bar :)
Loved the subtlety of your work, the font was a really good choice as well. Feel free to share the next pages here, or if this set is over, you can use the #๐past-challenge channel. Keep it up ๐
@primal fulcrum this came together really nice, Sig! I like the use of the blur on the clock. The way that you played with the title of the zine made it look very interesting! My only suggestion is just a personal preference, if you want, you might give the virus a different color, something like a saturated yellow or any other tone present on the zine, this will bring more consistency to your whole work. If you like the impactful of the red color, go for it ๐ Great job!
Awesome use of the blur, @buoyant nova! I loved the way that the water looks very realistic. The image achieved a great sense of movement with that. I also like the colors that you chose for the text and the shapes behind it. Excellent job!
Fantastic job @untold iron! I loved the way you masked the graphics on the mockup, the textures on the cover really helps to sell the realistic effect. Nicely done!
thanks ๐ @coral stone

@pliant comet welcome to the community! Loved how your zine turned out! Feel free to share the other pages here, if you want. Amazing work ๐
Your zine came together really well @fringe sun! Loved how the removals are looking very neat. Nicely done!
Lovely fonts choice @south adder! Loved the way that they match with the context of your zine! My only suggestion would be to recover the shadow of the thumb on the cover mockup. For that, you might try to use the brush tool using the original image as a reference, or simply play with the Linear Burn blend mode as Kathleen did on the stream. Great job, Neil!
Awesome way to add context to the zine mockup @safe linden! You did a great job creating an atmosphere with shadows and perspective. Another great job! ๐ฏ
This worked out great @lucid plover! Loved the way that you masked the mockup cover of your zine! The shadows and the layer mask are looking very on point. Nicely done!
thank you very much @coral stone

Thanks for showing the original image @winter tinsel! It really helps with the feedback ๐ . The blur effect turned out great on your day 6! The subjects really look like they are moving. Your zine is looking amazing!
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @winter tinsel
Great mockups @eternal mica! Loved the spread applications. I believe your layer mask might have been moved a little bit. if you take a look at the hand and the bottom area of the cover it has kind of an edge on it. You can easily recover this by selecting it again and then paint with white to reveal or black to hide it.
Lovely page @oblique anvil! Loved the colorful look of the elements and how the candies have a subtle shadow that helps them to be separated from the background adding even more depth to the composition. Well done!
@neat shale great job with the mockup challenge! The clean-ups are looking very consistent with the tonal values of the elements. ๐ฏ

@oblique anvil This Day 4 challenge looks great Colleen! Really nice composition and balance of shapes. I like the stylistic look you're using to tie these designs together! My only thought is that I feel like the text in the top left could be a bit easier to read. Maybe making the text darker, or lightening the background in that area ever so slightly. That's more of a nitpick than anything really depending on your preference. Nice work!
@neat shale Really nice clean up work on the mock up image! That's a lot to clean up but looks great. This will make for a really nice mock up base!
@winter tinsel I really like the subtlety of the movement in this one! it gives the image some busy liveliness. My only suggestion is that getting rid of the blur on the customers might give them a nice sense of focus by contrast, and make it feel like the workers are the ones being busy and moving around. Nice work with all these!
