@primal fulcrum Paul said that the more details on the bg, the more it would show, so maybe that's the thing. Personally, it didn't work much for me, either, and I ended up using only the filters that he showed 😏
@slow stirrup things tend to get glitchy for me after a windows update. The last few have reset most of my defaults even. sigh.

Is there a problem with the download of today's assets? Chrome is blocking the download.

@brittle slate Thank you for an awesome 10 days of DCC. Each day, you jam pack as much "stuff" into 25 mins as is possible. The crazy thing, Ive now watched you enough times that Ive learned how to follow you!!! (I must be improving.) Seriously, I loved the time together. Cant wait till your back. Of course, thanks to @coral stone and @bleak fossil for the invaluable work you guys do. Youre the absolute best. To all the other participants, your creativity and talent continues to awe and inspire me. Thanks for participating. Looking forward to seeing all of you in the next DCC.

Hi @vague shuttle! I like how subtle your cover is. The details on the head are looking very nice. My only suggestion would be to recover the areas of the I and M on the left, so the text can be more legible. Well done!

#

@young karma very impressive work, Artur! Loved how you combined the images and added the white outline to the text and to the elements, this makes the whole cover look more cohesive and interesting. Great job!

#

@teal lynx this is cool! Very creative use of the effect. I like how the fire refers to the title of the book. Well done!

#

@warm marlin awesome cover! Loved how the text is showing the background a bit at the same time that the contrast is preserved! The flowers with very low opacity in the background aren't distracting, this enhances the breathing space and adds more visual context to the cover. Fantastic work!

#

@eternal mica thank you so much for the words, Ted! :)
Great cover! I like how you played with the human/tiger and made them look like they were hidden on the island. Also, I loved how you played with the text, thinking about the hierarchy of it. Well done, Ted!

sudden hawk
coral stone
#

Awesome blending @wide surge! Loved how you blended the images, especially on the ear part. Just a suggestion, you might play with some color lookup or gradient map adjustment layer, just enhance the mood of it and unify the overall colors of the image, you can combine multiple layers and play with opacity and blend modes. Great job! 🙂

#

This is looking great @sweet fern! I like the top view of the island. My only suggestion would be to reveal more areas of the animal, so it will be easier for the viewers to identify it. Well done, Ron!

#

@tacit condor great job! Loved how you added the red tones on the title and introduced some of the cyans of the image without losing contrast. Awesome work and awesome challenge!

#

@north ridge super cool work! Loved the background distortions through the subject. Also, I like the text blending to it especially on the second version where the combination with the lines resulted in a great look. Very nice job!

@plain sable these covers are awesomeee!
Please tell me when Invisibear will be for sale, I want to buy a copy hah. I loved the effect on the title, it reminds me of gold foil. The water drops are great details.
Super cool job on day 8! The elements help to tell a story just for seeing the cover, which is great, the red and blue tones were a great combination for it.
Version 2 of day 9 is amazing! Loved the owl that you added, I wonder if you could add some light on the left side of it, 👇 just to match the light direction, even more, it doesn't need to be so strong, you can use the island and the zebra as a reference.
Very impressive job!

#

@tribal fiber very nice job, Dangelo! I like the emerald look of the titles. My only suggestion would be to brighten it a bit so it will have more contrast or you can add a very subtle drop shadow just to separate it from the background. Well done!

plain sable

Great cover, really like how you blended the dog to the island! My suggestion would be to recover some of the colors of the tongue, just a bit. If you want, you might play with some color lookup adjustment layers just to unify even more the effect, this is totally optional, of course 😉 Nicely done!

#

You too @eternal mica! See you on Monday! 🙂

#

Loved the image clipped to the text @prime temple! The high contrast on the subject adds a cool action context to the cover. Great job!

#

I just saw the other versions @prime temple, the style is incredible! Loved the colors on the background and the flowers on the subject are looking great. The circle with warm tones was a great choice as a complementary element to the cover.

#

@coral stone thanks for the suggestions. I did go through all the color lookups and nothing looked right for this. Then I did an overlay of a gradient map with blending and came up with the final. I’ll work on pinking-up the tongue and maybe trying some other gradients.

No problem @loud mist. Gradient maps are great for colors as well. Have a great weekend! 🙂

#

Beautiful cover and project @hasty oracle! I like how you played with luminosity, suggesting like there is a cave in the bottom area of the rocks. My only suggestion is an optional one 😉 You might try to make the text white, just to see if it stands out from the background a little more, especially on the The. If you lose contrast in some area, you can add a subtle drop shadow to adjust. Great job!

blissful wolf
coral stone
#

Super cool work @fluid wharf! Loved how you played with the scale on day 8! My only nitpick would be to adjust the kerning, giving an even space between the letters of the text from the top, especially on the L and O. Here's how you can do that:
With the type tool, place the text cursor between the letters you want to adjust the spacing, then with alt (win) or option (mac) press the left or right arrows (left, if you want the letters to be closer to each other or right, if you want them to move further away).
This way you can recover the areas of the T and G as well, you might also consider to scale down juuust a bit, so all the letters will be able to appear properly ;)
Great job!

#

Very nice @blissful wolf! I like the color that you added. It keeps the subtlety of the invisible effect at the same time that helps to identify the subject better. Well done!

@neat sparrow wooow amazing mood in this one, Anastasia! I like how the island is not 100% black and white, and its shadow on the author's name was a nice and creative way to add depth. The blending worked out great as well! 💯

#

I found 6 cats @arctic rover, did I miss one? haha. Super cool cover, Jude! My only suggestion would be to alight the title to the center, right now it looks a liiiitle bit to the right. You did an incredible challenge!

#

@safe linden this is nice! I like the way that you added the title with a similar tone from the flames and still preserved the contrast. Well done!

#

@sudden hawk amazing covers, Manal! Really like the cohesiveness of the tones on the flames challenge and the color grading on day 9! Great work and challenge! 💯

Actually I just realized today is the last day. Since I composite covers for authors, thought I would just fling one out here that I did last spring. The whole composite consists of about 6 images and the author's imagination.

This looks super cool @gilded flame! Loved what you did with the title and author's name especially the way that you applied the invisibility effect on its shadow. Well done!

#

Great job @inland kiln! The warm tones of the assets adds a great context to the cover. My only suggestion would be to adjust the kerning (space between the letters) of the Brackett. To do that you can place the text cursor between the C and K, for example, and with alt (win) option (mac) press the left arrow key to move the letters closer to each other. Nicely done, Pat!

Beautiful cover @pure wigeon! I really like your font choice. Well done 🙂

@midnight whale awesome colors in this one! I like how you contrasted the fonts very nicely. If you want, you might add more dimension to the island by darkening the right side of the wolf just a bit (so you won't lose details). This will enhance the realistic look of it since the light is coming from the left 🙂 Great job!

#

It looks great @charred oasis! Loved the overlay effect on her hair. Also, I like how the background colors look very cohesive to the cover. Just one nitpick hah, you might adjust the bottom area of the background by extending it just to fill this white stripe 😉

#

This is very impressive @young karma! I loved the details and the effect of the water! The blending of the island is looking awesome and the fill of texts adds great visual interest, I can imagine this if it was printed, having hot stamping on the titles. Awesome work!

#

Lovely work @rocky kite! Really like the gradient on the background! My only suggestion would be position the subject a little lower so the bottom edge can match the one from the cover, removing this little space. Well done!

#

This is beautiful @glacial minnow! Really like how you managed the shadows and highlights of the wolf and the island! The font looks great! Super cool job!

#

@vague swift Great job, Janet! I like how you made the right side of the wolf look like it is in the water. The effect on Dr. Moreau is looking great, I can imagine a spot UV in it when printed. Awesome work!

That's amazing @lean badger! Loved how you positioned the text without covering the wolf! If you want you might brighten the cover juuust a bit, you can create a levels adjustment layer using the third slider and move it to the left. #

Very nice blending @tropic haven! I really like how the island looks like it is the wolf's body, my only suggestion would be to lighten the wolf just a bit, to match even more the contras of the island. Great job!

#

@chilly hawk super cool job, Cecilia! I really like how the text effect is consistent with the subject's! My only suggestion would be to reduce the text's shadow opacity, so it will look more subtle and the readability of the text will be enhanced. Well done!

#

Great variations @north ridge! Loved how you played with the perspective on the second version. Just a suggestion on it, you might apply a lighter tone to the author's name to increase the contrast and improve the readability you can also do this on the O and W area of the Tomorrow it doesn't need to be strong, just a touch will be nice already 🙂 Nicely done!

@coral stone I think you found all the cats: Dante, Raphaello, Nicolino, Rupert, Stella and a stray kitty! You know I 'futzed' with that centering a whole bunch. Used the center button and it still looks off, just now occurs to me the background image might be the one that's off and throwing off the title. Very nice blending @hot thicket! Loved the textures on the cover as well, especially on the sky area! 💯

#

@winter tinsel this is super cool! Loved how you made the text effect. If you want, you can take a step further by enhancing the invisibility effect on the subject. For that, you can create a shape to complete the clothes around the neck and apply some shading. #

@south adder I really like the mood and look of this “The Long Tomorrow” image! The orange-blue color scheme is looking good. My only suggestion is

#

@vague shuttle Very nice! I don't think it's too simple, but you can always play with where you try and focus contrast if you don't think it has enough emphasis to it. Though I think the white eyes against the black background create a nice focal point. I think the swirlyness is a cool effect! Could be interesting to see a little of that in the head area too without it being too strong. Nice effect on the text too!

#

@young karma There's a nice stylistic consistency with your Day 8 challenge! The look and style of the dragons seem to fit nicely with the human figure. The stroke on the text also does a nice job of separating it from the background. Cool effects 👍

#

@teal lynx Really nice work on the flame effect! Though it could be nice to give it a bit of glow around it so it looks as though it's affecting the lighting/color on his head and the surrounding area. Just something somewhat subtle to make it fit together a bit more. I often like Color Dodge, Overlay, or Screen blend modes with a soft round brush for this type of effect. Nicely done!

#

@warm marlin Really nice work on the floral effects for the book cover design! I really like how it kind of transitions from a sort of headpiece into a more organic arrangement. It makes for a nice blend. Really liking the background gradient and texture as well, nice work!

#

@eternal mica Thanks Ted! Appreciate the kind words, glad you enjoyed it and always glad when you join us! Hah, I love the crazy blend between the tiger and human face. My only suggestion is it might be really cool to add some depth by adjusting the contrast of each face depending on where it is in the scene. For example if you more closely match the dark tones of the face in the top left to the dark tones of the hillside you might get a more realistic sense of atmospheric perspective to match the background. Really nice work, loving the colors in this!

nimble shardBOT
#

Gave +1 Creative Carma to @eternal mica

bleak fossil
#

@wide surge Really nice blending between the rock and wolf head for the Island of Dr. Moreau design! My only thought is the design looks a bit visually heavy on the left. I wonder if moving the man in the bottom left to the right side might balance it more. Or even just flipping him so he faces the other way might make him appear less crowded by the edge of the frame. Just a thought. Looking good!

#

@tribal fiber Very nice! I like the mirrored effect of the Invisible Man image! I feel like a text color other than black might read a little bit more clearly, especially due to it blending into his dark suit. Maybe something very bright, or between the values of the suit and the grey invisible effect. Nice work with this one!

eternal mica
#

@bleak fossil Youre welcome. You deserve it. Thanks for the critique. Thats a good idea. I didn't think of that. I realized after I had masked in the face that the left side of his face was much darker than the right. I should have masked the reverse. Or Transform>flip 180° the man's face.

@eternal mica yay the famous banana tool! nice job. I think adding the slight blur to the background helps the text stand out a bit more. it's still kind of difficult to read because of the background and the thin/detailed font. i wonder how it would look with a more simplified background? maybe one larger cropped image of a banana?

I think the background might be a little too detailed for the delicate font chosen for "daily creative challenge". you could play with adding a shape behind that text or experimenting with different background textures

Hi @golden nebula, you can use this channel to post your work. Feel free to tag me If you need any help! 🙂

#

Beautiful cover @plain sable! Loved the textures and the background colors. The repetition effect on the flower is looking awesome. My only suggestion is that, if you want, you might try to use the lowercase of the script font, so the letters will be able to connect to each other. Very impressive work!

#

@neon ermine this is very cool Owen! The texture on the background is looking nice! The effect on the PS turned out awesome. My only suggestion would be to reduce the Bevel and Emboss on the Behance word just a bit, so its edges might have the same thickness as the Ps' stroke. I believe this will increase the readability of it. This is totally optional, of course. Can’t wait to see your next works 💯

#

@olive cargo this turned out great, Jane! Loved how you combined the patterns resulting in a great context for the cover. Very impressive work!

#

No problem @inland kiln! Loved how you contrasted both realities showing the before/after. I also like how you matched the fonts so successfully, the script makes it look like a classic at the same time as the sans serif drags the total attention to the Dorian Gray. Excellent work!

#

Very nice work @south adder! Really like how you blended the wolf making just the shadows appear. I also like the texture that you applied to the text. Well done!

#

@jagged falcon loved how the wide font of the PS matches the geometric fill of it. Also, the shadows of the text below is a nice detail that you added. Nicely done!

#

@queen geode this is super creative! Loved the dog inside the P. Great job with the blue tones as well. I like that even though you have a blue background you were able to preserve the contrast. My only point of feedback would be to reduce the shadow's opacity just a bit and maybe try to place the S closer to the P, so they can have a better reading flow. The stroke of the P and S gives a great neon style. Amazing work!

#

@slow stirrup awesome cover! Loved the background image and how you blended the words to it. Did you use a blend mode for that? Fantastic job! 💯

#

@rocky kite I like the warm colors of the gradient on the background and how it contrasts the blue tones of the Ps. It looks like it has some white spots on the Ps logo, you can remove it by creating a layer mask on this layer and with the brush tool and black as your foreground color, paint on the white areas. Feel free to ask me if you need any help 😉 Nicely done.

#

@thorn geyser this is awesome! Loved the colors you chose for the frame and the texts, they add a metallic look to it. The subtle details on the Cs caps make a great difference to the cover. Outstanding job!

Lovely cover @split pier! I like how you played overlapping the Ps with the blue frame and the tree. Awesome effect on the Ps style as well. 💯

#

Loved the font that you chose for the title @north ridge those subtle details adds a nice visual interest for the cover. The blending is looking super cool, I like how you need to pay attention to the cover to identify the animal shapes and, once you do, you start to find the other ones. That's a great effect for the viewers. The warm tones of and the mountain overlapping the text, on the first version, turned out great. Awesome work!

#

Great to see you’re back for this set @gilded flame! Loved how you added a vignette effect on the background, it really brings more attention to the texts in the center. 😉

#

@young karma beautiful cover! I like the orange/blue combination, perhaps you might decrease the background brightness just a touch so the texts on the foreground will be able to stand out a little more, and if it still doesn't have enough contrast, you can consider lighting the text as well. Looking forward to seeing your next works. Well done! 🙂

#

@tropic knoll great blending on day 9! Loved what you did to the titles as well, it could easily be embossed if printed. Nicely done! 💯

#

@untold iron awesome colors, Julia! I loved how the texture on the background matches the metallic silver look of the Ps in the second version. The pink and green from the first version are looking nice as well. Great job!

That’s a lovely cover @prime temple! Loved how colorful it is. The subtle stroke on the word Photoshop it really helps it to separate from the background. @peak sentinel These came out great! Really nice variety of techniques and styles. I especially like the 1984 animation and Challenge 6. It could be really cool to see the animation looped so it lasts longer and the effect is more apparent. Great work on these!

#

@midnight whale Great effect on the Dorian Gray design! You really nailed that cracked effect in the center of the face, and it makes for a great transition between the two sides of the face as well. The texture in the right side of the face looks great, just enough without being too heavy, looks really natural. The only feedback I’d have would be that I think using the Refine Edge Brush tool could help you get the edges of the hair on the right and left side a little softer and more natural. It looks a touch jagged at the moment, but that’s quite minor. Great contrast in this image, turned out really well!

#

@young karma Cover is looking good! It could be nice to introduce a little color, maybe give the background a slight blue tint to give it that colder gun-metal look to provide a bit of contrast to the text and separate it from the background a bit more. Really nice textures in this!

#

@trail field The cover is contrasting really nicely against the background! I’d just fix the type in “Challenge” and add a space after “Creative”. It also might be nice to add a little more space on the sides of the text so it doesn’t look so cramped. Nice work 😄

#

@eternal mica What a beautiful ode to the beloved banana icon. Hah, very nice work! I like the styling of the text in this one. My only thought is the background image is fairly busy and makes the text a touch hard to read. Maybe blurring the background image a touch to give the text more focus could look good. Nice work!
Edit: Oop, saw your update hah, we’re on the same page. Looks good!

#

@neat shale The flame effect looks great, very cool! I think it could help sell the effect and make the fire look like it belongs in the environment if you added a bit of a glow in the palm of the hand. I usually like to do this with a Color Dodge or Screen layer and a soft round brush. Just a thought. Looks good!

#

@plain sable Glad to hear it! Also really cool textures in the background, I especially like what you did with the background flower shapes. Great gradients too!

#

@neon ermine Now that you have the banana nothing can stop you xD The cover image is looking good. Nice job on the embossed effect on the text 👍

#

@olive cargo Ooh, I like what you did with the text! Works really nicely thematically and contrasts well with the darker green background. Texture looks good!

#

@inland kiln Wow, this came out great! Really nice transformation between the two sides of the face, and they still match up nicely. Really awesome job on getting a really detailed and natural edge on all the wispy hairs on the right side, great masking. Impressive work!

#

@south adder Really cool! I like how prominent the eyes are in this. This is really just personal preference, but I’m noticing a lot of contrast in the wolf in the bottom left area with the really dark fur. Those dark tones pull a lot of contrast compared to the dark tones of the mountain’s shadows next to it, which are a slightly lighter more bluish tone. It could be nice to ease off that area of fur, and perhaps put a bit more of that contrast into the area around the center of the face. Just to make it a stronger focal point and allow the edges of the wolf to blend seamlessly with the rest of the mountain, if that makes sense. Nice compositing work on this one!

#

@sudden hawk I really like the bold graphic take on your cover image! Really great style and personality to it!

#

@vernal herald Really loving that sort of jungle cat vibe! I really like how the PS almost looks like it's hiding in the shadows of the foliage, and that also gives the title text some really nice clear contrast. Great little design flourishes on the text too, very nice touch!

#

@bronze bluff Nice job, cool texture in the background! Overall the design feels a bit dark, especially with that yellow flower background which seems like it should feel more bright and sunny. I think a levels adjustment to boost up the bright tones a bit could look good here. Good job 😄

#

@jagged falcon Very nice, I like the texture in the PS text! The repeating of the PS color in the smaller text's drop shadow is a nice touch to give the design a cohesive feel. Looks good!

#

@north ridge I really like how the wolf head stands out first and the tiger acts as a secondary read. The masking of the text with the mountain is a nice touch too that adds some nice depth. My only suggestion is I feel like the lighter "white" rocks near the water's edge on the left, right, and middle could be darkened down just a touch. They appear like they're in direct light, but in this image they seem to be in shadow with the light behind the mountain. I often like to use a multiply layer with a soft round brush for spot adjustments like that. Really nice compositing job on this Day 9 challenge!

#

@queen geode Hah, love this one! I like the sunny poolside feel of this whole design. My only suggestion is that it might help add some depth if you added a soft shadow on top of the P from the dog in the same direction you did with the PS text. I often like to do this with a soft round brush and a multiply layer. Nice work 😄

#

@untold iron Really cool texture contrast between the PS and background! I especially love that sort of metallic emerald look of the PS text. Both the color contrast and texture contrast create a really fun style for this one 👍

#

@slow stirrup Ooh, loving the color gradient and texture to this cover design! The transition of the caustic water effect into the sand texture looks really cool too. Great contrast between the text and background as well!

#

@rocky kite Really nice variety of text effects and textures here! I especially like the semi-metallic blue PS text. On the PS logo in the top left if you wanted to get rid of the white corners on the rounded logo the magic wand tool or quick selection tool could clean that up quickly and easily. Nice job!

#

@thorn geyser Really great style to this text! I really like the metallic gradient look it has. Really nice solid sense of dimension to the text as well. Very well done!

#

@young karma Looking good! There's a really nice sense of balance in this cover with the lime green texture in the bottom right text and top left. Very nice!

#

@sharp hedge Very nice! The invisible effect looks good, and the distortion within the effect works well too. My only suggestion is that the figure is a bit hard to make out because it is nearly the same value as the background. I think either darkening down the figure or the background so that one is darker and one is lighter might help the shapes read a bit more clearly. Good job 😄

#

@brisk spear Really cool effect for the cover image! The way you reversed the colors for the circles gives the whole image a really nice color balance between the blues and oranges. The bright white being reserved for the PS really helps it stand out as the focal point as well. Nice work!

#

@fringe sun Awesome, glad to hear it, and glad you're joining us! Really nice style and effect with the PS text, and I really like that glossy look of the background. It gives it some nice depth and dimension 👍

@bleak fossil Thanks for the great feedback, much appreciated as always!

One of my friends commentated on it yesterday with exactly the same recommendation and I totally agree.

I’m working on CS3 which doesn’t have the ‘select subject’ features as shown on the CC version featured in the Paul Trani walkthrough, it does appear very harsh around the edges of the subject, so until I upgrade to a newer version I should probably use my Wacom tablet and practice with brushes to blend the subject and background together 🙂

@naive mural lots of action happening in this cover image! love the color palette as well. the middle text is a bit difficult to read compared to the bottom text. I would match the outline style of the bottom text to see if that helps the legibility. hope that helps!
@prime temple great seeing your submission! i like how the edited portrait has a warmer undertone than the background. nice detail :)
@trail field very nice! i think this is especially successful because the lightest value of the background is still not as light as the lightest value on the portrait. this really helps me know where to look and separates the portrait from the bg! great job
@pure wigeon very naturalistic - it can be difficult to put thin text on top of a detailed background but it works well here b/c of the slight drop shadow behind the text. nice!

For my retouched version I combined the Curves Adjustment, B&W Adjustment and Solid Color Adjustment. I felt using Curves Adjustment to be a little intimidating at times, however, I enjoyed the ability to control the colors using the B&W Adjustment and Solid Color Adjustment the most. Overall, I liked what I was able to achieve with these tools. I look forward to building upon what I learned on Day 1.

coral stone
#

@plain sable You did a great job adding the warm tones on version 1! I also like how he has more contrast and the colors seem to make it pop a little more from the background. The lighting adjustments also enhanced the vignette present in the image, helping the eyes to go straight to the subject!
Also, the vibrance/saturation adjustments on version 2 brought even more life to the photo, especially on the green areas on the left. Great photo and great job!

#

@fresh swallow cool edits! I like how you made the saturation adjustments subtle but still were able to bring more life to the skin! Usually, when we do these kinds of adjustments, the shadows tend to look more saturated than usual which makes the image feel a bit unnatural, yours is not the case. If you want, and this is totally optional, you can create a color balance adjustment layer and add a bit of blue to the shadows, giving a subtle color contrast to the tones. Well done!

@soft arch very nice edits, Monika! This pasta made me hungry! 😋 I really like how you reduced the green tones of the original photo. The magenta and red tones might be looking a bit too much, you can see that by looking at the plate. You might reduce these colors just a bit to give it more balance, I believe that by fine-tuning with the curves adjustments will be great, but if you need and extra help, a color balance might be even better. Nicely done, Monika!

Cool edits @pure bloom! I like how the new colors changed the season of the original image, giving them a fall mood! The saturation adjustments also help the subject match, even more, the warm tones of the overall image. Great job!

#

@bronze bluff The saturation adjustments really add more life to the image, especially because there is a lot of green around her. Her skin tones are looking a little bit too green, you can adjust that by adding more red to the highlights (you can use a curves adjustment layer and with the channel red selected on the drop-down, create a point a little bit to the right and lift it). This way, you will add red color to her skin tones making it look a bit more consistent while the green tones from the trees are preserved. Feel free to tag me if you need any help 😉 Very nice job!

#

Really like the subtle adjustments, you applied @sweet fern! They make the subject to have even more contrast and colors without looking over the top. Well done!

#

@cold oyster I just saw your day 1, super cool variations! I like the drawing effect that your adjustments created on the image from the right, how did you make that? I also like how the middle image has more contrast and the subject seems to pop a little more from the background. Very nice!

@limber sleet I loved the pastel colors of your cover! If you want, you can increase the legibility of the letters by adding a bit more saturation and decreasing the brightness, you can do that by using the HSB on the color picker that Jesus showed on today's challenge.
Day 1 is looking great! I absolutely loved the effect on the glasses. Awesome job with the saturation adjustments as well, I like how they brought more life to the subject. 💯

#

@bleak turtle Loved how the luminosity adjustments brought back more details from the image, even the small details on the branches are more visible now. Incredible job!

@gilded flame this is very creative Nadia! I like how the image has that day to night effect. Perhaps darkening the subject would make the subject match, even more, the background. You can do that by creating a curves adjustment layer and with a point in the middle bring it down a bit. If you see that it added more saturation to the image you can change the blend mode to Luminosity. Well done 🙂

@tropic haven haha! that's very inspired! a short story contained within an image. the orange background definitely matches the hot summer afternoon idea, but his outfit says otherwise. i wonder what it would look like if it were a blustery fall day in central park? maybe a coffee stand instead of ice cream?
@eternal mica nice adjustments! my only feedback is I'd make the red text a little smaller so we can really see the adjustments you made 😆
@thorn geyser cool, i like the work you did to add focus to the subject and blur the background. the vignette is a good idea, but i'm not sure it needs to be that dark since it is already pretty blurred. hope that helps!
@obtuse spruce wow, so the before version was already black and white except for her skin/hair? that's cool. i like the yellow sweater mixed with the green background - very futuristic color palette.
@sacred field this is a really subtle adjustment and I think it's successful! you managed to increase saturation without giving the entire image a fluorescent effect. great job 🙂

@twin schooner nice! the red/purple shadows give this photo a romantic vibe. i think it looks a lot more "alive" than the original
@split pier ha! i like the subtle changes and not-so-subtle background. The area around the arm in the bottom left feels like it needs a little more attention since her skin color is extending beyond the line of her arm
@wanton badge very moody! what's the story here?
@brisk spear i really like the subtle edits here. the figure feels more intentional and grounded in the space. the darkening of the shadows adds some mystery to the image as well
@latent island wow! you were really able to bring some realistic hues into this vintage photo! great job. I'm impressed!
@tropic knoll nice job. you did a good job increasing the vibrance of the image without feeling heavy handed
@arctic rover ha! i agree that you pushed the edit pretty far, but that's a great way to learn what you like when it comes to editing! P.S the food with the adjustment layer STILL looks delicious, albeit a bit radioactive
@supple ledge the subtle edits are really nice. still feels vibrant, but the color balance feels more realistic now
@chilly hawk cool! my only feedback is that the "hg wells" feels a bit too close to the edge. i would give it a little more breathing room with the bottom of the mountain and the bottom edge of the image
@obtuse fulcrum it seems like you focused of adding more saturation to the jacket here - it's a cool effect!
@queen geode the darkened shadows help the figure really stand out from the background. nice!

@indigo monolith you might have luck making localized adjustments using the "select subject" workflow! It will select the figure, but then you can invert your selection (Select > Inverse) and now the background will be selected! Edit away! hope that helps 🙂
@sterile bane That makes sense. I'll give that a try. Thank you

#

@indigo monolith For adding color to the background I'm thinking you can do a selection of the lady and the invert the selection which would only effect the background and you can make changes that way. But not sure if that the best way
@winged terrace That must be the way, if you and @sterile bane have suggested it

@sweet fern Very nice! I like the texture on the text. I think perhaps darkening down the text overall may help it read a bit stronger against the background and balance the contrast with the bold PS logo. Nice job 😄

#

@umbral frigate Nice clear read to this cover, texture is looking really nice as well!

#

@naive mural Really liking the style of this! The Purple was a good choice to contrast all the orange as well. Nicely done 👍

#

@prime temple Very nice, the added saturation and contrast really helps pop him out from the background! Gives the image some stronger focus.

#

@indigo monolith I think for that you just need to separate the figure from the background by creating a layer mask. Photoshop's Select Subject function works really well, and the Quick Selection Tool is great at cleaning it up from there. Once the two are separated via layer masks it should be much easier.

#

@neon ermine Nicely done! The changes really give the subject a bit more vibrancy and contrast without being too heavy handed and looking unnatural. Very nice!

#

@blazing quail Looking good Ant! I really like the color contrast of the figure against the desaturated background. Looks good 😄

#

@rugged vapor Glad to hear it! The increase in saturation gives it a nice boldness. Having fun with it is definitely the best way to learn, nice work!

#

@tropic knoll Ah that's great to hear, really glad it was helpful. I use those all the time.

#

@sudden hawk The saturation boost really gives it a bold look! Always really cool to see how much colors and saturation can change the feel of an image. 👍

#

@young karma Really cool! These are looking good. The first one is nice and subtle, but gives it just a bit more pop. The change on the second image is really interesting, kind of changes the light source to almost look like some sort of cool moonlight. Really nice job on all of these!

#

@unkempt field The boost in brightness is looking really good! It gives the portrait a nice pop and makes the shadows look really nice. My only suggestion is maybe boosting the red tones ever so slightly over the yellows. It might look more natural, at the moment it almost appears as if the lighting in the room is from an especially warm colored bulb. Super minor, but just a thought! Nice work 😄

#

@safe linden Nicely done! This definitely adds a bit more pop and vibrancy to the whole image. 👍

bleak fossil
#

@vague swift These adjustments are definitely giving the image a nice boldness! A nice saturation boost without looking unnatural, very nice!

#

@compact pecan Really liking the sort of dark psychedelic look of the cover image! Also really cool to see you really pushing the colors so drastically in the first day’s challenge. My only thoughts are that I think the colors almost seem a little separated from each other. I wonder if a subtle cooling photo filter or some kind of cool color lookup could give everything a slightly cool tint to make it fit the scene and unify the colors a bit more. Maybe even darkening him down to fit the lighting of the scene a touch (even if it’s just around the lower half) could help too. Just some thoughts, nice work!

#

@fringe sun I especially like the color boost for this particular photo! It really seems to fit that outdoor sunny feel with all the brightly colored objects. Looks good!

#

@eternal mica Very nice Ted, those adjustments are looking good! The boosted red tones work nicely for this portrait. This is just personal preference, but if you wanted to push it any further I think this particular photo might look nice if you boosted up the brightness in the shadowed area of the skin just a touch to really draw attention to the center of the face a bit more. Looks good!

#

@fringe harness Very nice, I really like the sort of unified warm tone this whole image has. The adjustments also seem to do a nice job of bringing out the orange in the leaves behind him which create a nice contrast with all the blues he's wearing. My only thought is the saturation in the figure is bordering on unnatural looking, so tweaking it down eeeeeever so slightly might look good. Though not much change is needed. I like it!

#

@young karma Nicely done, the colors are looking good! Just enough to really give the image that extra pop. Nice job!

#

@hot violet Very nice, the extra pop of color is looking good! I feel like the face and red sweatshirt are looking really nice, but the blue of the jacket and pants are almost looking a bit unnaturally saturated, I think toning down the saturation on those slightly might give everything a more natural unified look. Nice job with this technique 😄

#

@summer rampart Very nice! The After image has a nice boost to the vibrancy that is looking good. This is subtle, but I feel like the red hoodie looks like it lost a bit of its deeper dark tones, which makes its contrast look slightly out of place compared to the red of the image. I think boosting the dark tones just a touch to the hoodie might make the whole figure look a bit more unified. Just a thought, looking good!

#

@queen geode Ooh, really liking this background change! The colors on the figure are looking really good too, they definitely have a bit more vibrancy to them. This is really just personal preference, but the figure doesn’t quite seem to match the lighting of the scene he’s in with his current brightness. Maybe darkening him down a bit might help? Or even doing with a gradient so his slower half is a bit more in shadow than his upper half. I often like to do this with a multiply layer or a masked levels adjustment layer by using a soft round brush. Maybe something like this?

#

@sharp hedge Nice work, the contrast against the background definitely makes him pop out more, and I like the warmer tones as well. Nice job!

@coral stone thank you Valdair for your advice, you are right, I thought red might be a bit too much, I wanted the same color for hair and pasta, because in this situation it looked like this, but on the photo it did not come out, I will try to adjust it. thanks a lot. I hopeyou had pasta today 😁

Day 01 fixing skin color, brightening the red and hat tassel colors (fixing the skin color also fixed the background as the WB was wrong, the blend mode of the skin tone change layer is 'color' - would I have needed to use layer masks to keep the background the same?)

sterile bane
#

@glacial minnow thanks for posting! how are you finding the DCC so far?
@muted valley oo hand lettering, I like it! When rotating text, it's a fine line between legible and illegible. I think this lettering is still legible, but I would try rotating it to the right just a bit to keep the viewer from having to tilt their head. I really love the light pint to dark purple gradient - adds interest to the background without being distracting 🙂 great job!
@novel scarab nice job foram! keep it up
@young karma the after version feels a lot warmer. i think it works pretty well! the blue light in the background is a little more distracting because it has a saturated highlight. I would try removing it completely with the patch tool or spot removal tool
@unborn prism thanks for posting! i like the idea of decreasing the contrast in the background to make the portrait stand out more. however, be careful not to make the sky in the background TOO grey. If the contrast differs too much, it starts to make the portrait look pasted on top of the background, not a part of the same space

@young karma nice job drawing attention to the focal point!
@winter tinsel cool edit - i don't think the highlights are too hot (they ARE hot, but it feels like a stylistic choice). I do think the cornea's are too white - they feel flat, especially since they're seen behind 2 layers of glass
@queen dew looks good so far! is there something else you'd like to fix?
@shy bobcat nice! the lightened values on the figure help draw the eye. however, the building in the background is lightened as well. i might try to play with a layer mask to keep the background darker so the figure stands out even more :)
@drifting pilot cool, so you skewed the highlights to be more pink! it's a cool effect. keep coming back for more challenges to learn more!
@south adder great, the scene has a lot of life now by increasing the saturation/vibrance! great job
@lean badger i like how you kept the moody vibe but pumped up the colors. be careful with the sky behind the figure - it will start to look "grey" and not realistic and you may need to do some specific edits back there using a layer mask so that the edits from the rest of the picture don't effect the sky as well
@young karma you are advanced! jumping into gradients! this looks like it could be a poster or album cover - love it. how do you feel about it?
@sand lichen you're spot on - a layer mask will help to keep the background uneffected by the skin tone edits. great job so far!

@fresh swallow wow cool job! I like how the tones on the background preserved or created more contrast on it. The red tones that you chose for the subject are looking very nice. It looks like you have some noise on the background and a bit less on the subject, to add it to the subject you can do this: Create a new layer > Fill with 50% gray (#808080) > convert it into a smart object > put the blend mode in Overlay or Soft Light > go to Filter > Noise > Add noise > choose an amount that looks like the same from the background. This will help to sell even more the effect that he is really on the scene. Let me know if you need any help 😉 Well done!

@little root Glad you liked, thank you so much for sharing your work! Very nice colors, Aisha! I really like how they contrast really well. @deep mango Great to see you’re back! Nice colors, Dorina! I like how the subject tones stand out from the green ones of the background. My only suggestion would be to increase the contrast of the background image just a bit, so it will match the light values from the subject even more 😉 Super cool work!

#

@pure bloom that's cool! I like the repetition of the subject and how you created a transition of the colors. This is totally optional but if you want, you might add a brighter tone to the highlights of the gradient map of the background, it will boost the contrast of it a little bit more 😉 Great job!

#

@solid mason great job! Loved how you played with the colors, especially on version 2 that you combined with the circle. I also like how you managed the contrast, keeping it consistent on the background and the subject. Nicely done!

#

hah @fringe sun very nice job! I like the primary colors that you chose for the scene. My suggestion would be to increase the contrast a little more, especially on the subject, this will help it to stand out even more. Also, you can use the smooth option on the Select and Mask to smooth the edges juuuust a touch. If you didn't see any changes you might try the feather slider. This are just some subtle adjustments that will help the effect look even more consistent. 😉 Well done!

@coral stone I couldn't agree more! I was trying to get the contrast up but failed (LOL) and the hard edge on the subject was frustrating me. @sudden hawk he really pops off the background with that color combo! using a warm color as the foreground and cool as the background is a smart choice.
@low garnet nice! i'm interested to see the colors inverted (purple BG, pink portrait) - it might help the background be a bit less distracting
@primal fulcrum fun! your selections look pretty clean (there are some areas around her leg that could be smoothed out a bit). is your son a magician?
@bold valley the selection around the flower is super crisp! nice job - did you add some darkness behind it to help pop it off the background?
@golden nebula I don't mind the bright blue - but it does start to "vibrate" on the orange background - i think it's because the orange is a similar intensity to the blue. i would try an orange that's a little lighter and a little less saturated. that might help!
@bold valley nice post! i think the increased highlights look really nice on the clothes - but the face feels a little blown out at this point

#

@queen geode very cool!!! i like how you used a warm color in the foreground and cool color in the background to increase a sense of "depth". the warm text in the background is a nice touch to bring your color palette full circle :)
@south adder the effect you achieved in the buildings is really nice. i'd like to see the portrait more "orange" than yellow.. i think that would help tie the portrait to the background more! right now the yellow-ness of his skin feels too different from the rest of the palette
@gritty violet HA! you made it pretty believable. it would be cool to see some of those spot lights on the figures
@pure bloom nice hierarchy here - the text is prominent and ties in with the background because of the blend mode. i might try some different placements with the text. right now there's a large gap in the middle and i think i understand your intention, but i would be careful not to cover eyes unless it's a specific design decision. maybe the text could be grouped in the center without the large gap in between?
@prime temple cool! right now, my eye goes to the giraffe first because of the alternating spot pattern (it's the object with the highest contrast in the design). I might blend the giraffe back a little further. The text is also a little hard to read because the lightness of the color is similar to the lightness of the photo behind it. you could try white or perhaps use a stroke or slight drop shadow behind the text

@cobalt void nice! do you have a favorite? i like the yellow on the blue - although i might try a different blend mode for the yellow so that the shadows are a bit darker. right now the figure feels a little too "grey" compared to the darker shadows of the BG

@mossy hazel The best tip that I can give you is that you need contact shadows. You will need those with anything that makes contact. If you take a soft brush you can paint under the feet just until you start to see the shadow at the edges. In other cases the lighting of the feet need to match the lighting of what they are standing on. Hope this helps. And the shadow gets darker and more precise the closer to the object it is. So you would be darker and sharper at the feet and softer the further away from the subject you get.

@vale sandal I loved the transparency effect that you created with the text and the rectangle! If you want, you might increase the scale of the image, so you won’t have the black rectangle on the thumbnail and the splash will be touching the top edge of it. If you see that you increased too much and still have a small rectangle, you can use the content-aware fill to fill it, just to see if it gives you a cool result. Let me know if you need any help. Nicely done 🙂

#

This is looking super cool @fresh swallow! I loved the effect that the color adjustments resulted. My suggestion would be to apply a lighter tone to the text, it can be even white, so it will increase the readability of it, especially if the thumbnail will be seen on screens with low brightness. Also, you might reduce the extrusion just a touch so the edges of the text will be more identifiable since blackletter fonts have a different style that we are used to. Well done 🙂

#

@tropic haven I loved the colors that you used! Their effects on the cat’s edges turned out very interesting. I also like the playful style of the font that you chose. Good job!

#

Amazing projects @queen aspen! Loved the color grading on number 1 and how you created a gradient to place the text! The second version is looking great as well! I like how you chose a very dark tone for the text making it very consistent with the birds, in the same time as it adds a great contrast against the yellow tones from the background. 💯

#

Loved the abstract look your thumbnail @hot thicket! My only point of feedback would be to position the text to an area where the feed would not crop, I know that this can be a challenge, but one idea would be to position the rectangle a little higher and play with some blending mored/opacity, so it can show the background while still shows the text area. Nicely done, John! 🙂

#

@cold oyster what a beautiful effect! I also like how you made the rectangle with a tone already present on the image, this helps to bring even more consistent to the cover! Great job!

#

This turned out great @chilly hawk! Loved the effects on the background, especially the way that you played with more tones without making it like it has too much going on. Nice lighting adjustments on the subject as well. Awesome job!

#

@safe linden loved the subtlety of your work and how the font matches really well the context of the image. Nice work!

#

@north ridge very nice adjustments! I like how the saturation brought more colors to the image without looking over the top. It also enhanced the cool tones present on the background. Well done!

#
