@long void Challenge 3 is looking good. The way you did the background makes for an interesting stylistic choice and nice contrast with the character. I like the colors of the image too. I wonder if making the authors name the same pink color as the title might unify the colors a bit better since the bottom doesn’t currently have any of those pinks and yellows the tops has. Might add some nice balance. You seem to have an adjustment boosting the brightness around the face area and the water behind him, it might help to make that adjustment a bit more gradual. Currently the gradient seems a bit abrupt like a circle around his head. Just some thoughts. Really liking the look of this one, great work!

@spiral leaf The moon effect is really cool! Nice job on this challenge Dan. I kind of like the lower contrast you chose for the text, it adds an interesting mood to the whole thing. Though I think the image itself could use a bit of a boost in brightness and some tweaking with an adjustment layer. Might help to increase the contrast a bit and strengthen the focal point. Looking good!
@austere root Looking good! Cool to see how you used the original images. I think it could help to boost up the brightness around his face area, both in the face/chest region and a bit of the flames behind him. Currently the brightness different of the horns and glasses make the elements seem like they don’t fit together. The might help tie it all in a bit more. Nice work 😄
@bleak fossil Thank you for your feedback. I'll never say no to more blood. 😜

@granite carbon good point about the poofy cloud, its actually a firework 😂 but it isnt obvious enough! will have a play around. thanks so much for your feedback 🙂

@fiery kettle Very nice! Welcome on in, glad you joined us! This is great, really nice job especially considering you’re new to Photoshop. Hope you’re liking it. I really like how you mirrored the color in the text as well as the boots, it gives the whole image a nice balance. A slight tweak that could possibly help would maybe be to both darken the boot on the left a bit, and brighten up that part of her leg ever so slightly. I really love the contrast and pop between the boots and rest of the girl, but the value difference almost seems a little too abrupt to look natural. Just a thought. Really nice work!
@willow nebula Nice work on Day 3! Looking good. Nice work compositing the images together. I think it might help the whole image look more interesting/dynamic if the books extended to the top and bottom. This might be hard to do though at the bottom since the source image cuts off there, but just. A thought. It also might help to tone down the brightness of the background just a touch so the brightest brights are reserved for the character to create a strong focal point. I like what you did with the cool/warm color balance in the background!
@safe linden Very cool! I really like the strong graphic shapes and simple graphic read of your cover. I really love the way you have the brightness in the face for a nice focal point, but I think adding a bit more of a dark gradient towards the bottom would lessen the strong dark silhouette of the leg area, and keep that focus more on the upper region near her face. I don’t think a lot is needed, since the graphic silhouette works well. The mock up looks really good too!
@dusk verge Really interesting use of colors and shapes in your Day 1 challenge! I like the unlikely use of pink and a sort of neon green for a scary movie, but I think combined with the creepy black and white triple face image and the diagonal lines it gives it a really interesting unsettling feel. Very cool, and really interesting And effective style!
@wet thistle I really love how soft it looks and then you suddenly realize her clothes are all bloody. Unexpected and cool!
@fathom moon Hah, very cool and very creepy as the same time. I like the simple color scheme as well! I think the effect with the facing being the only part of saturation on the girl is a really cool idea, but I think you could probably add a bit more brightness to the rest of the chest and head area. The color/saturation contrast already creates a strong focal point on the face but the transition from the face and rest of body almost seems a little too abrupt with how dark it is. I might help gives the image a little more of a natural flow with those areas brightened slightly. Very cool image, really nicely done!
@narrow glade Very cool! Really liking the gritty dramatic look of this image. The red text adds a really powerful effect too. I think perhaps a levels adjustment on the man to the left to boost his bright/highlight tones up just a bit might help. It might help add a little more visual weight/balance to the left side, while still keeping that dark dramatic look of the rest of the image. Very nice work compositing these together!
@willow brook No problem! You’re welcome to share any of the challenges you do throughout this two week DCC. Glad you joined us on Discord! Really interesting style to this! Kind of reminds me of a show or something from the 90s, hah. Nice work with the color contrast!
@wet thistle Love your approach to this image. The low contrast feel works really well while still giving a great read to both the text and the image. Very ghostly feeling to the whole thing. Love the style and direction you took this in!
@stuck schooner Very cool! Really liking that red streak through the text (though it might help to mask the red to the text), and the style of the text itself is really cool. I feel like perhaps the boy could use an effect of more shadowed lighting.... perhaps in the sides of his face with a multiply layer. Or even some sort of background glow to have a secondary visual point (warm glow of the lamp, or creepy misty blue glow) to give the eye a 3rd place to go after the text and face. Maybe something like this? I also added a subtle cooling filter to the boy. Nice work!
Sorry, gifs always lose so much quality
@fresh warren The mock ups for Challenge 3 look really good! I really like the graphic element of the lines on the back. Nice work masking her into another background! It looks good. My only issue is that a lot of the values/focus/detail in the image are the same. She doesn’t pull focus as nicely as she could. Perhaps if you used a multiply layer or something to darken down the areas outside the doorway like the window and wall, and/or even decreased the contrast in those areas and increased on her. That might help really focus the eye to her at a glance. Maybe something like this? Nice work!
@bleak fossil thanks! I really like the lamp glow suggestion. I tried to do that, but didn’t look right- I like how you did it. I will try again!

@bleak fossil thanks for the feedback! Looking at it again I can see what you’re saying and yes I agree the leg could lighten up a bit. I’ll take a stab at it. Thanks again!
@high wharf thanks!! haha i thought it was quite funny. and puts into perspective how big the dog is!
@stuck schooner I used a color dodge layer. Choose a warm yellowish color, doesn't even need to be that bright, and a soft round brush. Then just adjust the opacity to your liking. You can get some nice glows. Color dodge is the best.
Oh man.. this is tricky stuff. Looking forward to trying more tomorrow - I'm learning, but it's tough.
@bleak fossil I don’t think I’ve used that before- will try it in the morning- thanks again for the great feedback and help

@bleak fossil as you suggested, I put a few more globs of blood, and also tightened up the letter spacing a tiny bit. Thanks.

Color dodge and multiply are definitely my most used blend modes 😄

Hey everyone!!! A little bit late.. but here's my attempt for day 1! What do you think?? (btw it's my first challenge 🙌 )
@heavy depot your challenge is insane, definitely would buy it 🤓!! What filters did you use? Amazing work👍
@round python welcome to the challenge! Really great work, but perhaps enlarge the title as its hard to read (unless its not actually a book cover)

Day 3:
Shadows are mostly added by brush tool, since I prefer adding it myself rather than using drop shadow option
and almost all effects, color corrections, shadows, etc are added as clipping masks or through blend mode
@grave meteor the first one I like the best. I would suggest that you put the text in the center though. And word is CASTLE. And if you put the words in the centrr the readability will also improve because the white will be on the darker background. The second version is hard to read because I can't see all the letters. I like the gradient very much! I sincerly hope that my advice is useful. I see the improvemets already! Keep up good work!👍
@young karma it could use a title 😜
Thanks for the feedback @glacial path and @bleak fossil I've reworked the title and added a few more lighting effects. I think it's more readable now but would appreciate opinions – maybe I've gone over the top?! 👀
Gave +1 Creative Carma to SamPetersonArt
@bleak fossil Thanks Sam for the feedback! I'll try to rework the cover over the weekend, when time is more on my side. It's going to take a while since I merged the layers in the end to ad a lightning effect on the composition. And then another one, and another one, and again and again, if you know what I mean ...😳

@sturdy vault A bit dark, yes, but I see you already got good advice from earlier birds!
I made up a book again and used my own pictures shot in Norway and Iceland. I know fonts are not a strength of mine. So feedback is much appreciated. What do you think?
Here is my book cover for Day 3
@young karma its looking really tight 👍 looking awesome. You know what might look cool, if you took the "t" in cemetery, and made it a bit larger so that the cross bar of the "T" is kind of umbrellaing over the two A's and standing out like a big old crucifix.
@ebon sparrow really good presentation
Ah great idea @high wharf I'll give it a go when I get some time, thanks for the feedback 🤝

@austere root Great choice of book - Sandman Slim is awesome. 🙂
Last one - just remembered some feedback from @bleak fossil about backgrounds from challenge 2, and the red shirt was making the background less effective.
@glacial path I actually don't think you are seeing a seam, but instead my somewhat clumsy brushwork. Either way though, I see what you mean and I will see if I can clean it up a bit. Thanks!

My attempt at the Day 3 challenge, drew inspiration from one of my favorite books as a child, found out it's a series now!!
My day 1, had trouble thinking of one, watched the lost boys last night so thought I'd do that, even though it wasn't a book. Used the mixer brush to paint the characters.
Really cool!
@sturdy vault I was thinking about doing Coraline myself, and decided against it because I couldn't figure out what kind of picture to use for Coraline. I think this is well done--although I might like to see something a bit more mysterious in the image. Maybe a bit of a glow to the cat's eyes (maybe use a layer effect to have a slight button showing through), or a tiny glow around the outside of the miniature "door." Kind like what I did with my Haunting of Hill House image. Or maybe I am just thinking a bit too literally.
Challenge #3: Layer Masks
anyone help me ?
@bleak fossil Thanks for the suggestion. I agree that the man needs to be a bit brighter. I was playing with different filters combined with layer masks and stumbled across this effect, and then was afraid to do too much and maybe mess things up. But, I am an old pro with levels adjustments, so I feel pretty safe playing with those. Thanks for the suggestion. 🙂

Hey there, this was my challenge #2... What do you think?
Do you think the different objects work well together or is the composition lopsided?
looks great to me!
Day 4, i went a little bit psychodelic on this one but i think it works
Photoshop Daily Creative CHALLENGE Layer Masks D 03
@tacit condor love the carpet pattern on the cover
@sterile bane they look great together! Love the bright orange and crispness of all the objects. Great concept.
@tacit condor great idea with the carpet pattern
Today's challenge. I'm wondering if I should have made the hair more illustrated? Or used more of them. Originally I'd thought about using 6 copies, arranged in a pyramid.
mockup
@vocal palm very cool . Love how understated it is.
@unreal crescent I really like the concept for this cover--captures what I remember of this book. But looking at it on screen, it is not immediately recognizable as hair. Might look better in a larger format...but I just wanted to share that impression.
Thanks - I will see what I can do - maybe burn a bit so you see more strands, or include the shape of the face in another colour?
@glacial path @bleak fossil Here is an updated version of the cover. Tim, the color variation is actually part of the image that I used as my background overlay-I attached it so you can see. Do you think it is too distracting? Sam, I slightly adjusted the levels to brighten his hood and face. I also added just a very slight hint of color to his hood to slightly "reflect" the ferris wheel behind him. Do you think this works, or does it detract from his monochromatic look?
Updated image
Yesterday's version
@narrow glade Very nice! I really like that boost in values, it’s subtle but I think it really helps provide a nice balance And stronger focal point to the image. I think the red color could go either way. The monochromatic aspect works, but if you keep it I’d try and give it a softer edge, and cover a little more of the top of the head. You could always tweak the opacity to get the specific amount of tint you want. It’s looking good!
@unreal crescent Hmm, tough to say. I wonder if having a more illustrated/graphic version of the hair might look a bit better stylistically. The pyramid would also be an interesting idea. Might add some depth if the knife is overlapping it, and having two different size elements (since the knife and 3 hairs are around the same size) might add a little more interest. You’d just have to make sure the contrast of it wasn’t competing too much. Maybe a slightly drop shadow from the knife? Hard to say without seeing, but those are some ideas worth a shot. I like the effect you got on the text, nice job!
@kindred kernel Love this image, the colors are great! The mockup is looking really solid too. I think the text is pretty cool, but it might work better to have your name in a different font. Maybe some more simple, bold, sans serif font. Looking good!
@bleak fossil Thanks again. Here is another version and I am really happy with it now. I think the last version was a little more wishy washy with the reflection, and now it seems more intentional.

Just now getting in to this challenge so heres day 1
@safe linden I just scrolled to see if I can get some inspiration. I love the coat as the background! No need to change this, but having the mirror over the heart area of the coat would have a different meaning hahaha
@high wharf Of course. 😆
Version 2: definitely worth making some tweaks! I love it now.
@sterile bane Such a simplistic great layout! Brainstorming now. If the text was a different color, or created shadows, some of the strings could appear in front and behind the text? I had NO idea you can create a straight line with the brush tool. I've only used shape tools and rasterized them if need be so thank you for that!

@unreal crescent, yeah, you can definitely tell it is hair now!
Thanks @spiral leaf

Thanks @bleak fossil - I agree. I think a boost in highlights would be a great idea.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to SamPetersonArt
@honest gorge I really like your cover with the two versions of Claire. My only suggestion is that the figures seem to be sitting on top of the background instead of inside of it. The way I would go about fixing this is to use the "feather" and the "shift edge" functions within the Select and Mask window and/or using a soft brush with really low opacity and painting over the edges of the figures on the layer mask itself--this just makes the edges slightly less stark. However, as this is a surreal challenge, maybe this is the look you are going for. In which case just ignore my comment.
Day 2: I've never read or seen shutter Island so I just recreated what was done in the video. I had a lot of trouble with the ellipses and cutting up the lighthouse so please don't look too close at it.
That's scary @willow nebula 😱 awesome job!
@narrow glade Thanks for feedback, i'll adjust 😉

@spiral leaf great point about adding dimension to the "strings"!
@fallow bough wow, the eyes on the sky are really amazing 😍 . My only suggestion is that you can even the light levels of the eyes, since in the original picture has the light coming from the right. You can duplicate the right eye then flip horizontally, like this:
Night Film: The sad story of a girl who was destined to be the greatest kart-race-driver in sugar rush .... oh wait that's Vanellope from Wreck it Ralph, wrong story ... 😛
@keen pendant you beat me to that idea...I was just working on it 😅
still work in progress

Day 4: The finished book cover is shown above. This is a book I just finished this morning, It was much easier to use Dead Heat than figure out some classic book 😉 I started with color layers and added the imaged on top with either a color adjustment layer or a blend mode and lowered opacity. The back cover is the description from Amazon's description.
I'm also showing the images I used for the cover. The two dolls are from Pixabay while the animals are from adobeStock.
@tropic breach. Thank you 😊 a lot of your feedback on the two versions and I try to reach to the level what you want

Having a tough time with this one. Have an idea but I can't figure out how to accomplish it. Will work on it this weekend...but I won't be surprised if I end up doing some version of Kathleen's Hearts in Atlantis because I can't figure anything else out...
@forest aspen WOW! that book looks 110% legit off a shelf. Absolutely fantastic! I love the dark, shadowy, bedtime look. Its amazing what can be done with a simple stock vector when it's in the right hands (that means you 🏆 💯
@forest ivy I love the color tones and idea, but that reflection needs some loving. Where her bum meets the water and her arm need to connect to the reflection at the same spot. Maybe then play with perspective warp, add some ripple effect, and fade the reflection out as it gets further away from her. Fix up that reflection and you'll have an A+ looking design! Awesome job.👍
Day 4
@narrow glade sit back and relax with a cup of coffee, and scetch it out roughly on paper. Just let your mind wander and surrender to the natural flow of creativity. If you have a clear plan down on paper, you'll sit down with your Photoshop and conquer ⚔
@tacit condor wow. Looks fantastic. She streight out of "Blade" or "The Matrix" or something. My only suggestion would be to match her illumination to your vignette to really sell it.
@wanton charm phenomenal! I like where you took it. My only feedback would be that the girl in the forefront's head looks a little squashed in the back. Maybe add a bit more poof to the back of her head if that makes sense. Also, I think the icing on the cake would be to add some slight film burns and/or film scratches over top to give it that old film projector look. My 2 cents 👍
@high wharf thanks for the feed back J, truly appreciate your time.
I was messing around with that image a little after watching Paul Trani’s live stream on glitch effect and color channels. Thought I could mix a little of everything, but I totally hear what you’re saying. 😉

@willow nebula That is so creepy, definitely makes me want to pick it up from the bookshelf.
Day 4 - Compositing.
hey guys, here's my book cover for Day 3 - masking. My version of a Castaway book I would love to read!! One of my favourite masking tools is the "Refine Edge Brush Tool" for the hair - make good use of it around the dog. What do you think? all feedback welcome 🙂
@forest ivy oooh i love this cover! I would prob edit the reflection so it follows the movement of the waves. I would recommend Filter > Liquify and then move strokes along with the waves 🙂
@urban berry nice one! i like the scratches. it isn't so obvious that the wardrobe is behind the lion. maybe reveal it a bit more?

@austere root I really like the way you put the items on the gear. If I would change anything though the author is getting a little lost on the steampunk lady at the bottom.
Challenge No 3 completed. Am really enjoying these challenges, and the horror genre. Especially working with Black and White and a touch of colour.
Day 1
Nearly forgot Original Image
Challenge 4: Miss Hargreaves is a book about a man who makes up a story about an eccentric old woman who then appears physically into his life.
Day 4 (in before the strike of 3 am!) I am not so happy with the title. Struggled with it quite a bit - I have a lot to learn, I think, about using text. Otherwise, had a lot of fun with this one!
@fathom moon I feel like the Title should stand out a little more, I can barely read it.
this is my version
Day 1 - editing colors
Way too many assets to include. Something feels off with this. This is the concept I was going for but maybe one too many items being raised??? Or just too busy?
Thanks to Unsplash for the assets!
@hidden pendant | thank you for the feedback.
Actually wanted to adapt the title to the image design - but as a book title, you're right, it's a little too dark.

Challenge No 4, I had the horse image hanging around just waiting for me to get around to adding wings. Not entirely sure that I needed to add the extra horses - especially the one at the top don't think it works from a perspective/size.
Images used
@young karma Nice mockup and very simple design! I just think the "Ace K" is too blatant. You could make it more subtle 🙂
@hidden pendant The compositing looks so realistic. However, I suggest adding a shadow and removing the extra horses. Regarding the girl, I think you should give her a Hue/Saturation to match her colors with the scene. 😉
@ruby panther I think it's great except for the door being extremely warped. Other than that, it's a very simple and elegant design!
Thanks @silver trench I went back and cleaned that up a bit.
@fathom moon I love how you composited everything in perfectly. Maybe you can add some feather to the eyes mask.
@stuck schooner Everything is so realistic and the text is beautiful, keep up the great work!

@ruby panther Maybeit would be less busy if you put the title above the image? I didn't read the book, but I like your cover 🙂
This is my entry for Day 4
@ruby panther Tommy Knockers! One of my favorite books. That one is crazy good! You need to kill it with a bath of neon green to sell it. The UFO's bottom should be green and the door wood green or grey. Simple fix would be to put a high contrast curves layer and then a gradient fill over the entire project, Neon green of course. Maybe even add some glow effects to your assets and title to sell it.
Just in time to finish challenge 4. Took me while to combine 5 pictures into one beautiful garden. But I think I worked it out somehow.
..and here the cover without the template
@young karma your book looks beautiful Laurence. My suggestion would be to change the text to white, and increase the size of jellyfish to own that space. Also that sunset looks a bit too dirty/saturated, maybe decrease that a bit. 💯
@urban berry for your Day 2, is it supposed to be "Tower" or "Towel"? Just checking. If intentionally done, cool, if not, you should fix that. Looks great though.👍
@vernal lake WOW! Your Secret Garden cover is gorgeous. A+ You get a cookie ➡ 🍪
Day #1 challenge. A little late I guess but better late than never, right? Let me know what you guys think!
@sharp lily looks good, I like the red vs black. Maybe increase the author's name a bit.
Thanks for the feedback @high wharf ! I'll try to improve that
Thank you for your comment @silver trench . From a pure aesthetic point I could remove the "Frank Baker" text, but since he is the author, he is kind of important.
@granite carbon I LOVE the detail in the rim of his head that you created!
@silver trench - thank you for your comment!

I am stuck in day 4, realize this idea but book not real
@silver zenith How are you stuck? it's looking really good. It seems like the the purple in the guitar you could play with the colors and maybe more masking on the/strings fret so they are not outside the trunk.
@young karma cool font on your Day 1
@stuck schooner Animal farm cover is so cute. Maybe try a dark stroke on the letters instead of the white? then you can play with the opacity on it. I also want to learn more about fonts
challenge 4 (made some changes) Better balanced and centered everything. Made Miss Hargreaves a little larger (she is the main supporting character).
I guess I can't leave well enough alone. The book does have some darker sides, so maybe the pink version is too lighthearted (?) So I changed the background and the lighting to alter the mood. Which version do you like better?
Ilike the darker
@granite carbon So do I, I prefer the darker
@nova swan Thanks for advice🤗

#✂challenges-feedback OK, here is my submission for day 2 (got distracted with Carrie) I cut up the lighthouse and added an extra "Guard Tower". I used my amazing Adobe Capture application to turn my "crazy person" doodles into shapes for my library to use in my design. The waves where created with the "render clouds" filter and warped up etc. and I rendered some fibres for texture and stuff. I've never seen or read this story, but after researching it for this project, I am very interested in it. let me know if you have any thoughts or suggestions. Cheers.
@high wharf Wow!
Day 3 PSChallenge using Layer Masks. Feedback is always appreciated. Does the text convey enough movement to complement the speeding train?
@coral scarab the disposition of the text looks good to me, pretty dynamic. But if I was you I would consider changing the font, as some letters, specifically the 'A' and 'N' look a little funny.
And BTW, awesome design!

@dim dagger that's smoking hot 🔥 it really looks cool. I love that little overlay graphic and symbols. It looks out of a movie when they freeze frame and zoom in on a assassin character, and display their statistics. You should deck out your design with more of those kind of things. Little digital countdown, target lock ons etc. Would look super duper awesome, but it looks fantastic as it stands.🏆

@forest ivy you should make the text pop out. Maybe move it more down, more in the center. Colors are good, they complement each other. And the author of the book should be more obvious. If I see the design as it is now, it’s more a poster with the signature of designer down. 😊

Challgeng no 4 / Compositing
this is my edition of daily challenge number 1. I have L plates on but I think I'm getting there?
I'm not sure how to get the picture into the book template?
My challenge 4 - Images that make up the composite
The final piece
and last but not least the book mockup!
how did you get the cover into the book template Claire?
@grave meteor this is good, better than I imagined! Very clever solution. I am proud of you👍
@fast moth nice cover. There’s a typo on design tho.
Getting the coloured bottoms to the pieces is tricky
@jovial moss Amazing! Very beautiful composite!
@drifting compass Beautiful work! The contrast of the house is really nice!
@forest ivy It's really cool, but the text "Being a Wallflower" is a bit unreadable. Maybe you could fix that.
@young karma Oooh! I like the technological style!
@coral scarab I like the way you completely changed the mood of the picture!
@steel slate open the mock-up PSD provided. In the layers you'll have "Book 1" or "Book 2" in a group. Open the group and find the smart object layer that says art or cover or something. Double click that smart object icon and it will open a new document in a new tab. Go in this new tab and place your art accordingly. When you are happy, press ctrl s to save it. Close this new tab and like magic, your art will be on the cover in the mock up PSD. You can reopen the smart object to reopen that tab if there are any more changes you wish to apply, just remember to save it before going back to the mock up psd. I hope all that makes sense and helps.
Thanks @high wharf . Here are the changes. It was wel intended that the colors looks "strange" on and around the jellyfish. But it was indeed too saturated.

Both pictures are original with a 'splash' of humor added. Since I took them, getting a Halloween feel from it was tough so I know it's lacking that. If I had time to redo, I would move the whole scene down a bit as I feel like there is a lot going on where the title is. Although I may move "and other short tails" to the bottom.
made this book cover , pls coment how did i make
@silver trench Thanks for the feedback!

@young karma I really like the lighting and the extra markings on the title!

Hello everyone, here is my revised for Day 2 challenge.
and my revised for Day 3 challenge.
#✂challenges-feedback Day-4 composition. I used a photograph I took of my niece at my sister's wedding, a picture of my kid's teddy bear, and some stock fire to redesign the cover design for Firestarter. any thoughts or suggestions as always are more the welcome and appreciated. 🙂
@high wharf I love when people use there own images to start and then possibly add stock when needed! Nice layout and great job with original images!
Thank you @spiral leaf I always prefer to just take my own pictures when I can. I was all ready to start this huge 🔥 in my backyard this morning but I dicided otherwise to avoid getting evicted lol.

Anyone care to share their Behance link? Just looking for a few ideas an inspiration for their layouts. If I can't ask this here, just let me know.
@high wharf Wow! The cover design looks epic! I really like the vibrant colors of the flames in combination with the darker background and the font of the title. I probably wouldn't set the text on the back of the book in italics. Usually that's reserved for emphasis. But well done 🙂
@spiral leaf if you're looking for other Challenge posts on Behance, search for the PSDAILYCHALLENGE keyowrd

@spiral leaf Alright! That's a really cool scene! I like how you have placed the cup right in the center of the scene. I just have some very minor things you could improve 🙂
The mask of the cup seems to be a bit too tight here:
Probably because of of the lacking contrast against the original background. Same thing goes for the handle 🤔
You could fix this by going over the desired areas manually. I would recommend using the curvature pen tool. It is very precise and less difficult to use than the regular pen tool
The mask right here looks pretty good to me 🙂 Well done!
@glacial path Thank you, I will update that.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to evil
@glacial path I agree with the handle. That was a dang iPhone photo of mine in Portrait. Much different than the Canon used for the whale. I almost thought about snapping a new one today but I liked that my deck was wet when I snapped it. I never used the curvature pen tool but will try that now! Thank you.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to evil
@jovial moss Oooh! I love the monochromatic color scheme you've used! The clouds also look pretty realistic (I think you have used the generate clouds filter to fill in the missing areas? If so, try to use real clouds, they almost always look better 🙂 ) Good job on the placement of the horcruxes (spoiler 😛 ). The texture on the text and the frame is a nice touch 🙂 . The only thing I would change is the visual hierarchy. Everything has pretty much the same size. I would play with the scale of the text a bit, especially the "Deathly Hallows" part. Maybe even dedicate more space for the authors name
@spiral leaf iPhone? Wow! That's pretty good 😄
@steel slate Yes! Using simple shapes as decoration is a great way to make your cover unique. Black on black often is a bit tough to see. Maybe you could slightly brighten up the pullover?
By the way, try disabling the black background to check if your mask is accurate. You can see a weird shape right below her chin
good job on the gradients and the lips! I would just add some shading to the tooth. It looks a bit too flat right now. Also, try not to soften the edge too much 😉
I wonder if you can do something with this empty area on the left. You could add a dark background or another person or just a dark texture
@steel slate if you want to lay down one of the books, you would have to find a different mockup . you can try to warp the perspective but that often looks fake (unless you take hours to reconstruct the correct perspective)
best option would be to use Adobe Dimension to create a custom mockup
Day #3. What you guys think?
@sharp lily Nicely done! I love the idea with the crowd 😄 I think you could tone down the luminance in the background and go for a darker theme. Maybe even add a color wash
The mask on the subject in the foreground looks nice and clean, even on her hair and I really like the dark eyes! 🙂
@glacial path thanks a lot Tim! I think I got what you said about the background. Gonna try it 😊
Gave +1 Creative Carma to evil
awesome! Feel free to ping me if you post an update
@midnight elm what a great scene! This looks like a lovely rainy night... except for the blood I guess 😄 . I Like the lens flares of the lanterns! The title is set in a beautiful font, which absolutely is a great choice for the cover design 🙂
I think, one of the layer edges is showing through here
try to soften it a bit 🙂 You could either use an eraser or a layer mask. I would recommend using a layer mask since you can always go back and edit it, should you be unhappy with the result.
For the transform challenge - it's my photo of a beach and some demo stock photos to test the composition. Not a real book title, though I would like to read this book.
Thanks to @glacial path , tonight I learned the Curvature Pen Tool and am MUCH happier with my cup handle!
Gave +1 Creative Carma to evil
@spiral leaf using your wet deck picture was definitely the right choice even if it meant you had to work a little harder. The colors in the cup reflection are superb. 🥂
Thanks @high wharf ! Much appreciated. I was ready to walk away from it but really wanted to give it one more shot.

@tacit condor Very nice! I’m liking the look of the title and text. Currently I feel like there’s a lot of visual information in the title, but all the values are roughly the same, so it creates a bit of a situation where the eye doesn’t know where to look. I also think it might help to leave the carpet pattern off the front face of the cover as it creates a lot of contrast that distracts from the rest of the design. Perhaps you could create more of a visual hierarchy by varying the sizes of the buildings so one is bigger than the rest, and each one gets slightly smaller, or perhaps you could play around with making the biggest one a bit brighter than the rest. Something to create a sense of where the eye goes first, second, and third. Just some thoughts. Love how you added the carpet pattern on the back of the book for the mockup, very cool!
@glad steppe Day 3 challenge is looking really cool! I like the simple graphic look of the whole thing. Nice job on the masking, though I feel lik selection around the back of the hair and chest region of the jacket could use a little refining. I often find the “refine edge tool” of the quick selection tool quite useful for that. Here’s a quick video if you’re not familiar. https://youtu.be/c2I7X92IVGk Also, this is kind of nit picky, but it might help to darken the region around the hand a little, and allow a little more brightness under the face around the shoulder to give the gradation a more natural fade off and transition from the brightness of the face. Nice work!
@vocal palm Nice work on Day 4! I like the way you handled compositing multiple faces together. The color are looking nice as well. I like the sort of mood you stuck with this image, but I think even still it could use a levels adjustment to boost the values a bit as the entire thing seems a bit dark. You could even mask the levels adjustment so most of the brightness ramps up the in center area. Also, if you wanted to push that psychedelic feel you could even try boosting up the saturation just a touch. But I think the levels adjustment would give it a stronger initial read and impact. Liking you choice of text too, nice work 😄
@glad steppe Nice work on the composite for Day 4! The selections are looking really solid. The only suggestion I have would be to darken the background a touch so the shapes and text have a bit more contrast and read a bit better. Currently a lot of the values of the objects are a bit too close to the value of the background. Looks good!
@hushed shoal Really nice! The cutting of the image and the added ellipses look really good! I kind of wonder if a subtle blue gradient in the background could look cool. A sort of neutral blue tone at the bottom, fading up into black at the top. Nothing too saturated or bright, but might give a cool sense of a foggy/misty lighthouse area, and be a nice contrast to the orange of the lighthouse. Of course that’s totally just personal preference. Also really like what you did with the masking of the title, looks good!
@grave zenith I would like to read that book, too - Hahahaha! Baba Yaga is my favorite fairy tale. I like the composition and I am really looking forward to seeing your final version.
PS DCC #4 Compositing
@high wharf Love the way the picture wraps around the book jacket. The fire looks amazing and works perfectly over your images. Probably best you used stock for that part of it!
Thank you @stuck schooner

@midnight elm I like the insinuation of a crime with the red blood on the ground. Cool, too, how you added a little pink color to the glow of the lamps, which I think really adds a lot to the overall effect. I kind of want the pocket watch more over to the right- maybe partially off the page? I don’t know- maybe play with that piece of it. Also like the double use of the “N”
@tacit condor Great, creepy jack o lantern- the tree looks a little like a creepy hand. Love the way you did the title and tucked the author’s name in there in a lighter color. Nice. (just correct the sp. in legend)
@tacit condor Great design. Great lettering. You could strengthen the focal point by brightening the figure and giving it more contrast.
@forest ivy I really like it just the way you did it! The colors are great and the composition is really well balanced
@coral scarab What a great font. Also, the way you combined the images works so well.

@stuck schooner It's really cool, however i think you could add a Hou/Saturation to the child, to make him blend in more.
@urban berry Very clean and simple design, I love it!
@spiral leaf WOW! Now that's some AMAZING art! I love your idea. 10/10
@high wharf Great Idea! You could make the text a bit different to be legible.

@midnight elm Very simple and amazing design.
@young karma You're welcome friend!
@grave zenith Very nice mood and colors! I think you could either change the font, color or style of the text to be more emphasized.
@wet thistle Very nice colors and mood. The gradient and texture you used on the text is also amazing. Now that girl on the street wasn't very necessary in an aesthetic point of view.
@short mica I love the kind of lighting you used but i think you could perhaps move the top text a tiny bit lower and the bottom text up a bit.
Second attemp at Challenge 4. Removal of additional horses and made a curves adjustment to the girl and added a shadow. Not sure about the shadow but thanks @silver trench .

Challenge #5: Brush Making
P D C C Brush Making Day 05
very quick one, just to get the hang of it. Would like feedback on my brush...🙂
Preferred this one
Day 5 - Please feedback thx 😄
Here's my entry for day 5 🙂
Here's the book cover I made, any tips and suggestions on how can I improve the text are welcome 🙂
Day 5 challenge
Day 5 - Brush Making
@fast moth I really like the brush you used. I might ease back the drop shadow a tiny bit, and maybe see if you can squeeze the "The" in between Winnie and Pooh, as opposed to over top, as at first glance I read "The Winnie Pooh."
@deep mango I like the text here. I might suggest either more goo or less - if you go more, there's currently enough dripping going on that it seems a little odd that the left sides of the letters are so relatively clean. If less, I might just delete a couple of drips here and there.
day 5
having fun challenge 4
Okay, well it took me a while, but here is my Day 4 challenge. This book isn't really a horror novel, but a strange little book I read this weekend that is definitely pretty surreal, so it worked better with this challenge than my original idea. Now on to Challenge 5.
This is the missing image from my images page. Discord pegged it as "explicit." Hoping it will come through better this time
This is a version of the cover I'm working on. Feedback is welcome.
@short mica The font that you used for the main title is difficult to read in all caps like it is. I like the "musicality" of it however. What if you just used this font for the first letter of each word and a different one for the rest of the letters? Or at least make it Title caps, not All Caps.
Also, the word "Improvisation" doesn't really read well as a single word. Maybe keep it more or less in a line, but skew each of the letters individually?
Went a little overboard with this one 😄 Also, I know Hamlet is not a book but I had this idea stuck in my head so I had to do it
Day #4
Here's another version. Feedback is welcome. Thanks
@vague vortex I really like this second image. It feels much less literal than the first image. And I really like the way the pixelation works in your font here--whereas on the first one, it seemed like it was superfluous. 👍

@prisma raven so clever with the Empire State Building as a syringe! Love this
@honest gorge Really haunting cover-very cool
@tacit condor love the lettering- very retro - perfect for that book
Thanks @stuck schooner 😉
Gave +1 Creative Carma to s.brooks
@tacit condor beautiful! I love the painted texture on the raven and the title 😄 . The abstract blue shape in the background adds a lot of depth to the design 👍 ! It looks very much like a Poe book cover. Nicely done! I would perhaps darken the feet here
@prisma raven noice! If you're going for blood drops, try a darker and more brownish color 🙂
The flipped city is certainly a great and unique idea 🙂
@vague vortex I don't think I have seen a brush like that! Certainly a great choice, even more so in combination with the dark red version behind it. The colors get a bit messy here, perhaps that's something you could fix by using either a more prominent texture or by blurring the are
@sharp lily woah, "a little overboard" seems like an understatement 😛 . Jokes aside, I love the glitchy title and the white border behind the foreground objects. This ties the whole composition together but it also adds depth since parts of the border are masked by the arm, title and statues. To improve this image, I would go for a more clear color theme and reduce the vibrance in parts of the image to enforce a visual hierarchy
but you should totally keep some of the objects as vibrant as they are right now 🙂
@forest aspen I am very impressed! This could very well be a real cover, the composition looks organized and the linework is intricate and beautifully complex 🙂 . I would just brighten up the are behind the bottles slightly to go away from the pure black 🙂
@glacial path Thanks for the feedback. It helps.

Day 5 - I Adobe Captured some sheet music to make a brush. Unfortunately, all my brushmaking efforts soon appeared to be in vain when it came to writing with it. Only the very attentive observer, equiped with a microscope and tons of imagination might spot the notes in the text. Well, ..., haha! The piano is the one which was kindly offered by @sterile bane last week

My day 5 entry - officially mind blown by adobe capture. ❗
Another book cover ripped from my reading list -- this is book one of a series and unfortunately, book 2 isn't available, yet, so I had to put it on hold, I hope to see it soon. This book cover is made with a mixture of images, top image, from AdobeStock (tree & paper) and Pixabay (globe, lantern, hand and book). The scribble in the middle is what I made the brush from in Capture. I used pattern overlays on the background colors for interest.
@young karma Love this cover. How did you make the brush that you used for the lettering? It is super interesting.
Hello everyone, here is my revised for Day 4 challenge. Any feedback is appreciated.
Day 5 Challenge. I made two brushes for this. Very fun! Although I've tried them on previous titles, I can not for the life of me create the text by hand so I used them within the comp instead. Background pic is an original iPhone pic.
@urban berry very nice! I see a lot of improvement. I just think you could make the title a little more visible, maybe making it bigger or changing its color or even placing it a little higher.
Brushes I made for The Coffee Shop ...
Day 5. I am not completely sold on my brush, although the process of making it was super fun! It would help if I had a tablet, and wasn't trying to write with my trackball.
The images came from Unsplash and Pexels
Any advice on making the brush more effective?
Challenge #5
Day 5 : I wish I could hand letter better.
Just a little catching up, here's my entry for Day 2 🙂
The image I made for this book cover
@narrow glade I love trackball and agree that writing with them can be a challenge. I used mine for more of the outside design of the book but yours cam our great! That guy in the window seems like a real "pane" hahahaha 🙂
Here it is, with a "Magritte" style inspiration, what do you think ?
Working hard on this. I wanna do this as a career but I have an uphill battle. Please give more feedback. tThanks in advanced
@Zombacula#5941 I really like the pixelated effect of the title, very cool!
@sharp lily war and peace it's great. I really like the concept.
Can anyone help me fix this? my eyes are literally red now.
For challenge 4 I decided to go with Poe, this is my daughter's favorite poem. I do not own a mouse or tablet (on my must needed shopping list) so it took a few more tries, but so much fun and am excited to play around with making my own brushes more. Love your feedback.
@nova swan thank you! I really like the brushwork you did! I just think the elements should feel like they belong together, like a solid concept

Maybe adding some texture to the plane or filling some of the white space could help
@sharp lily is this better?
I'm a little bit late with the challenge haha but here's my challenge #3, what do u think?
@nova swan I like the changes!
@coral scarab thanks , Tina . My struggle with the brushes is real.I think I'm trying to be too clever with my "eye" brush". I like the dark contrast on your pit but the pendulum l can see some lines around the edges.

@nova swan Your text looks really cool! I think it would be better if you move the plane to the left and down a little bit.
Here's my day 5. Looking forward to read all your precious feedback!! :DD
Hey Guys, here is my attempt for Day 4: Surreal & Transform. My take on "Inception" incase it wasnt clear. I especially loved the scene in the movie where the characters are floating around in zero gravity - so created my own doggy-version. Is there anything here that doesnt quite look right? Looking forward to your feedback!
@granite carbon oooh i like how you used brushes to create the water effect!!
@hushed shoal heyy, i like your cover. Although i would change the colour of the author as its not very legible.
@vague vortex oooh i like the pixelated look of the text! and youve paired a good font for the authors name!
Day 4 v 2
Thanks @gilded nimbus. The texture in the water was created with watercolor on paper, then a blending mode in Photoshop. The brush for the lettering was created with a sponge.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to Hannah
@nova swan I had the same problem, I decided to take a small piece of sheet music as a brush and ended up cropping and changing it until it wasn’t recognizable anymore. Your text and red eyes are clear though, I like it!
Thank you @narrow glade I created mine in a very similar fashion as @sterile bane did. Coloured chalk on paper and then used Adobe Capture, I adjusted the spacing in PS so it's quite dense and maxed out rotation jitter for randomness. I used a second brush created the same way for the text but again adjusted for randomness, rotation and spacing.

@shrewd cairn that cane out great! Beautiful usage.
@nova swan thanks, I'll have to work on that some more. I had the devil of a time making it.

Could be a book cover but we all know it's a musical. I tried to make my brush look furry. Do you think it works? I think it's very hard to estimate the outcome when starting to create a brush. I did it for the first time and think it's super fun!
@nova swan nice! It looks more cohesive now
@vernal lake I really like the furry text idea, but there's too much empty space in the scene, maybe you could move the cat down a bit and make the top text bigger.
@ruby panther Very smart idea! In my opinion, the birds in the middle are not that necessary. You could make the bottom elements white to add some contrast.
@young karma Very beautiful and elegant design!
@limber birch Very nice texture you added, I would suggest making the "DAN BROWN" text bold to have consistency throughout your design.
@gilded nimbus Wow! I love how you made the dogs go in the letters, that's a very smart idea!
@gilded nimbus thank you, I'll try to fix it

Hi everyone. Can you help me. How can i change the File type RGB to CMYK? I CREATED file print type RGB now need to give it for printing. ? What i need to do?
Hi @young karma In photoshop go to Edit > Convert to Profile, then select the relevant CMYK profile for your printers. Also, it's worth soft proofing i.e Command Y on a mac to spot any colour shifts
Most printers also accept PDFs so another method would be to keep the file in RGB, but save the file as a PDF and change the output settings on the PDF to convert colours to a CMYK profile, that way you keep your RGB file and also have a CMYK for print.
challenge #5 - Brush Making
@sharp lily thank you for the feedback

@willow nebula I want to keep fiddling with it but making the brush first may be a conceptual error on my part. I had a hard time thinking of a book that I wanted to use a brush on the title.
@nova swan I made exactly the same mistake! I was stuck with these notes and had to find a book, and then kept on strruggling with the brush. Well, another day, another challenge!
@limber birch I really like this cover, and I like your hand lettering quite a bit. I think the element that your lettering is missing (I had the same issue with my lettering), is that it is not as textural as the actual typed lettering. Since the book is the Da Vinci Code, my immediate thought was to add a layer effect over the word "Code." Maybe find an image with a bunch of numbers and symbols and use a blend mode with a clipping mask to just give the word some additional texture? I would also fix the spacing between the Da and Vinci--it seems too far apart to me.
@short mica Thinking in Jazz works so much better now. The change to Improvisation does not work quite as well--now it reads as three separate words--I think your original concept of it as a line of text worked better--just needs to be a little easier for the eye to follow the path of the word. Also, check your spelling on both "Improvisation" and "Infinite." Lastly, I like the addition of the treble clef, but I think the color is too bright and takes focus away from the title itself. What do you think?
@fast moth Nailed it!
My day 3, went with something that's not quite a horror, unless you were the horse.
Realised you couldn't see the back cover text very well, so here's the 2nd version.
@magic rampart Wow, I love the black & white design!
@hearty wharf I love these icons you used and the mood it conveys, I see an empty space under the text, maybe that could be filled with icons as well.
@short mica Great job! The typography is awesome but the text in the middle and bottom is a bit unreadable.
Handwriting is not my thing even with a wacom. I enjoyed making the brush though.
I'm unsure about the empty area in the top right of the design. Does it evoke a sense of lonliness? Or does it just look empty? What could I put there to convey a feeling of DREAD?
@sterile bane I really like the empty space--I think it works well. But if you wanted to add something, maybe a very faint image of an axe...
I followed Kathleen's advice to add the negative space on the right and I like it. Do you?
Day 5. My first horror/thriller book design! This challenge has made me realize I need to read more Stephen King and other horror books.
@scenic summit cool! I think the fact that you used a white background with small black text on the back is a nice contrast with the front cover.
woah @forest ivy , did you make that brush for "the passage"? the scratchy nature really mixes well with the desaturated foliage. I think this book cover is super strong!
@sterile bane maybe you could add a baseball bat like the one used in the movie and maybe a set of feet coming from the shadow next to the bat
@forest ivy, I agree with @sterile bane, your cover is really strong. Great book too! My only suggestion is to tighten the spacing between Justin and Cronin, so they look more like they go together as a grouping.
@deep mango interesting! i was thinking of something similar.. but have a silhouette of a woman standing in the light HOLDING the bat (or axe, from the book). Kind of in this style so you only see a few details:
I forgot to add the cover image. Had fun playing with the corners in the title. Do you guys like the sharp edges?
@young karma-I really do like the edges on your lettering. It reminds me a lot of the actual type on one of the book covers I redesigned-The Dead Zone. I was looking for a similar type face when I was working on that design, and couldn't find one I liked. I guess today's challenge came a bit too late for my taste. 🙂
@magic rampart Your book cover makes me feel sad--I wish Black Beauty had ever been able to be in a gorgeous environment like the one you show on your cover.
thank you @silver trench !

@magic rampart Amazing cover. Love the yellow border!
@reef sapphire Like it! Just finished the documentary on Netflix. Very interesting!
Today's Challenge Playing around with transforming some text!
My quick first draft, would love to hear what you think of it!
@narrow glade omg that dead zone cover! i totally forgot about it! i think that was the cover of the version I read... how funny. also, i love that color combo. Khaki green & salmon-orange? so strange.
P D C C Text Tools Day 06
Here is my cover for Day 6. I know it's not a book but it inspired me. the effect on the text is better in full view of the cover alone (not on the mockup)
@hearty wharf simplistic is good and for this concept I think it works great
thank so much @deep mango - i need to spend a little more time on it!
Gave +1 Creative Carma to Dorina Boneva
summer love is a Nepali writer Subin bhattarai book.
@hearty wharf now i have it playing in my head head head head
challenge 6, text
Playing catch up here is my Challenge #5. Loved making brushes, Adobe Capture is my new bff lol. I know it wasn't Halloween themed so do forgive.
@nova swan ha ha, so sorry!! my little boy is playing it on youtube ... a lot ...
Stretched the lower serifs and added to bottom of rounded characters.
Liked better without glow behind Stephen King
Challenge #6: I kept wth the Misery book. Here are three different versions. This is version 1
This is Version 2
This is version 3
@hearty wharf no, I don't think it's too simplistic. I love the simplicity of it. The only problem I see with it, is reading the first few letters.
@sterile bane Thank you! And thanks for showing how to create brushes in Adobe Capture. I've been having fun with these challenges!
Gave +1 Creative Carma to Kathleen
@narrow glade Thanks for the suggestion! I'll have to make the spacing tighter.
Challenge 6
@silver trench Thank you 😀

@forest ivy Great brush, really goes with the scene.
@narrow glade I know what you mean, animals should have good lives.
@fossil widget Thank you, nice text.

@young karma Wonderful cover! I may have even tried changing the color of the portion of the "NE" that falls over the moon. Great job 😀
@honest gorge oh wow carla - that's a super idea, looks great!
@granite carbon thanks linda, yes i agree, it needs more attention! just couldn't resist to do it quickly for the design review ... 😀
Gave +1 Creative Carma to LindaCline
@lime meadow I really like your background image, but I am finding the lettering confusing. It almost looks like the book is called "Mistery."
@honest gorge The manipulation you did on the letters is spot on!! Great job!
And the mockup
Day 6 - The first scary book I read. I was much too young, only 11. I am still scared when I think about it 😳
#✂challenges-feedback Day-6 Here is my go at Misery. I used Kathleens base design as a starting point, and then added my own little touch. I traced a sledge hammer and painted it, used a little penguin statue from google images, and then used patterns, strokes etc. I tried to transform the Title into a cottage, with the sledge hammer as a mountain backdrop. does it work ? 🙂 I got some blue shadow spilling onto the handle, and i need to shade the penguin a bit more before uploading to Behance.
And this is my happy little mock up. ☃
@high wharf really like the penguin and your treatment of the "M"! Nice job.
Thank you @keen granite

catching up on challenges #5 , wasnt happy with the custom brush lettering, but used the custom brush to create the green background.

Day 6 type treatment
Here's my entry for Day 6 🙂
@prisma raven well that's gonna creep into my dreams tonight. Great job.
And the image for the book cover
@safe linden I hear you about text and those brushes. My shaky hands are very mean to me. I love your Green Mile design, simple yet very strong. Good stuff.
yes, the brushed not really compatible with my mousing skills, unless the goal is grade school art.
@deep mango This looks super scary, well done! Good attention to detail with the back cover too! Are those lines part of the font (I would guess so). You did a great job customizing the text 🙂
@silver trench @narrow glade
Thanks @hearty wharf @narrow glade 😊
Gave +1 Creative Carma to Tan_2019
Thanks @glacial path 🙂 Yeah the lines are part of the font, it's Gobold CUTS
Gave +1 Creative Carma to evil
@prisma raven omg, the person/sheep combination is definitely nightmare fuel 😮 . I like how you warped the text but I wouldn't warp it too much to the point where it becomes difficult to read.
@deep mango cool! thank you 🙂
Gave +1 Creative Carma to Dorina Boneva
@safe linden Your design is beautiful, the clear colors and the clean text result in a wonderful contrast against the black background. The alignment seems a bit off though. I would center the whole design vertically (or just center the authors name between the green background and the edge of the book 🙂
@high wharf Impressive work 🙂 Just two things I would change to improve the design: The lighting of the sledgehammer looks off. The only light in the scene comes from the window in the background. The hammer would be rather dark with a thin light around the edge, similar to this... uh... cat
and the second improvement is the texture of the floor. The texture itself is fine, but the perspective is off. If you draw in the straight lines, the grid looks something like this
where it should look more like this
First, convert the pattern layer to a smart object. You can then use CMD/CTRL+T and warp the perspective by holding down CMD/CTRL and dragging the corners of the free transform bounding box
try to mimic the perspective. this should result in a more believable floor texture
@willow nebula Nicely done! I can definitely see how you have warped the text to match the objects in the design 🙂 - I would probably reduce the intensity of this warp here
something like this could work
Also, it looks like the edges are very sharp and pixelated. Make sure to turn on Smoothing when working with the type tool 🙂
it's not catastrophic, since you have shared a high-res file but for lower resolution files, this becomes vital
let me know if you need help with the smoothing settings ^^
My entry for today's challenge. Not sure if a Slab Serif font works for this genre, but was inspired by @sterile bane superb Saul Bass-esque cover. Possibly should of gone with a more geometric font choice, what do you think?
@young karma I like the strong color contrast between the yellow background and the purple text. The border around the text seems a bit off though - it is rather soft compared to the otherwise clean lines in the background 🙂 - Perhaps you can also leave some room for the authors name
@honest gorge The wobbly font is a great idea! The title is still legible but you still get the underwater vibe 🙂 I think the yellow submarine (hehe) is a bit too yellow though. Perhaps you can darken it slightly and remove some of the warm colors
@glacial path thanks for the feedback. I have my file open and have fixed up the floor perspective and a few other things. Regarding the lighting on the sledge hammer, the hammer is out side of the centre image and hanging out with the Title logo thing. Does that make a difference(question mark) I will fix it up either way, just wondering. thanks again for your time.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to evil
@glacial path Thanks! I notice the sharp and pixelated edges now, even in the author’s name and “rosemary “, which I left unchanged, so it must be the Smoothing setting, . I must confess I never used it before. I haven’t worked with text often. I’ll look into it tomorrow morning, and will give you a chat call if I don’t find it.! 👀
Gave +1 Creative Carma to evil
@high wharf yeah, just saw that. Hm, now that you say it... it does make a difference.
My goal was to play with the contrast between the two font sizes and weights. But think the title is a little too thin. I'm afraid if I make the title bigger it would be too much going on at the same time. What do you guys think? Any feedback is appreciated!
@high wharf if you have the time, you could try changing the light direction so it is lit from the top-left; roughly where the window is
@sharp lily I absolutely love the idea of an all-text, all-caps book cover! But the authors name does become less legible. I think you could try something like this?
or this
just to bring in the good ol' visual hierarchy
Oh I see, the kerning between the F and the K seems a little odd
@glacial path thanks a lot!!
Gave +1 Creative Carma to evil
@sharp lily yeah, your cover works because everyone knows Kafka. It probably wouldn't work with an unknown author 🙂
so this is an edge case.
I think you can just about get away with it, but you can certainly add visual interest by playing with lights and shadows or contrast in general
@glacial path I see what you mean. It looks sort of flat and one dimensional. Thanks again!
Gave +1 Creative Carma to evil
Anytime! As always, feel free to ping me if you post an updated version 🙂
@glacial path i fixed the lighting on the hammer to match the window, I raised the point where the floor meets the wall so the space between floor and window is equal to the space of wall to floor highlight, and i fixed the floor perspective and masked out the floor texture as it gets further from the light cast onto the floor. looking better (question mark)
@young karma a slab serif font is certainly an unusual font choice for a modern "cyber"-based genre book. But I think you have transformed in an unique way by filling in the negative space between the characters and by using the glitch effect and it actually works! I would perhaps pick a different color for the matrix lines in the background. Green seems a bit too cliché 😉
@high wharf love it! 😄
I think the hammer looks much more natural now! Thank you for posting an updated version @high wharf
Gave +1 Creative Carma to Jesse S.
@glacial path thank you for your guidance.😘
Gave +1 Creative Carma to evil
@glacial path Thank you for the advice, I'll take a look at those lines. Yeah I worked hard on trying to balance the font to give it a blocky feeling but still retain a bit of character. Shout out to Paul Trani too, I used the wave glitch effect he demonstrated in his video, worth watching for anyone who hasn't already. Right I need 😴 laters all.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to evil
This was a fun one!!
@young karma alright! see ya tomorrow! And yes, Paul Trani is the king of Photoshop 😄
What do you guys think? The top part of the book looks simple but I couldn't think of anything else to add. I colored an original picture and feel like I made the font my own so am pleased with the outcome.
@vague vortex - that is one freaky lady ha. nice job. is that an actual quote from the book?
@high wharf Love the bird! Ya kinda 'flipped the bird' there. haha
@glacial path Thanks foi for the feedback, i will adjust the yellow submarine hahaha

Okay everyone, hoping for some help here. I was hoping to create some sort of text effect where it appeared that the letters were blowing away like the leaves. But I just cannot get it too look right. Any ideas or suggestions...? I could be fixated on this idea and something different would work better, so alternative suggestions are also welcome.
@narrow glade couple things off the top of my head I'd try. 1. Smudge tool 2. Filter wind blast 3. Filter motion blur 4. Filter wave warp 5. Rasterize text and then apply puppet warp. Hope that gets you where you want to go. Best bet for all those options would be to cut and paste the desired letter to another layer for greater isolated control.
@spiral leaf That is not an actual quote. But its fun.
@narrow glade - funny thing is, I know how to actually make them blow away in After Effects as an animation with a sprite generator in 3D but have NO idea how to accomplish that in Photoshop. Haha.
Day 6 I seem to be stuck in a devil rut 🙂

Challenge #6
@austere root WOW skunkie! Your Devil said Bang design is brilliant. You can slap that on a shirt today and sell it. I'll buy one. That's some awesome typography artsy stuff right there.
#✂challenges-feedback Alright, I think I am done and happy with this. Continuing on with @glacial path advice, I fixed up the lighting coming in from the window. Added just the slightest warp on the crazy talk on the wall, I also darkened the light patch on the floor and let some of the texture to come up and through the white.
Had so much trouble getting Adobe Capture to put my brushes into my library yesterday, that I gave up. Finally found a couple of them eventually made it this morning. I don't tend to read a lot of fiction, but this book moved me to tears, to a point I had to stop reading it in my lunch break. Netflix made a movie of it but not well. Had a bit of trouble getting the right images to work together as well. Time to give up playing, but fairly happy with this. Images from Pixabay by Engin_Akyurt, Danielkirsch and Traphitho.
@keen granite Thank you - I will try your suggestion 😀

challenge #6 - Text Tools
is there a place where you can download custom shapes? I see Kathleen has a page of them in her Ps and I was wondering how to obtain something simular.
@dusty pond Please ask question in #❓ask-a-question
ok
Okay I've followed @glacial path advice and replaced the clichéd green tint in the background, with a more retro 80s colour scheme. Still not totally happy with this one though.
Thank You @high wharf!

@austere root - your "Devil said Bang" cover looks really good 👏
Challenge #6 I know it's not a book but it definitely was creepy to me especially after finding out it was partially based on true events 😮 What are your thoughts on the treatment of the type? I was going back and forth trying to figure out if it was to subtle.
Challenge #6 mockup. Love to get feedback 😀
@fathom moon , thank you. I had a lot of fun with this one.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to ANDREAS H.
@sharp lily Loving your "Die Verwandlung" cover. Excellent!!
@keen granite I like all the type, except for the word Stairs. For some reason it just jumps out as feeling very separate from the rest of the image. I love the rest of it though.
@keen granite maybe if you flipped the stairs horizontally and had the letters of the words stairs spaced out one letter on each stair, like it was walking down.
@austere root That is funny that you said that I was actually just trying that!
Okay last attempt on day 6, something totally different. Closer to something i like, but still not sure. 🤔
Thank you for the feedback - I'm still learning my way around this chat at Discord and thanks to anyone who has commented/suggested on things. 👌 🙂
@sharp lily Cover is looking great, nice style.
@austere root great suggestion! I definitely like this better. Thanks!

@young karma lol yup it was super creepy
cool work @ebon sparrow
@sturdy vault Great use of elements from the book. It would be cool to try moving the "in" further from "Alice" and giving it a similar treatment as "Alice" and "Wonderland" and adding a subtle drop shadow to the elements that are on top of "Wonderland". Very clever!!
@ebon sparrow absolutely love the "Last Town On Earth" cover! 👏

@high wharf Thanks for the suggestions. I completely spaced on the smudge tool, which I tend to use in my "real life" so no excuse there. Your other suggestions are great too, except what do you mean by "filter wind blast"?

@ebon sparrow your Behance project is looking amazing. Keep it up. It's so satisfying to see our projects come to life and come together like this. So glad to be here with you all.
I moved the in and Alice and added formatting to in. Added shadows to the elements on Wonderland.
Challenge #6, We Have Always Lived In The Castle, by Shirley Jackson. Font is HVD Rowdy. Photo is mine (Dirleton Castle, Scotland).
Nice one @young karma ! I wonder if you might want to make the image at the bottom a bit darker (it looks vaguely cheerful to me right now). But I absolutely love what you did with the lettering.
@ebon sparrow Just checked out your Behance. The smoke effect along with the hand lettering on The Big Sleep is amazing! Great job!

This was an old project of mine i created the logo and the overall design.
The important note here was this brand should be something if u would see it right away on your grocery store u should buy it.
I wanted to create a balance between / sustainability and something premium.
— The owner of this product should feel himself good after buying this.
Packaging is the key.
@narrow glade it's under Filter - Stylize - Wind and then play with the options, Blast - Stagger -left - right etc.
I want to improve my displacement with Tim's protip about the equalize filter. Will report back later. In the meantime, what do you think about the displacement on the type? Is it still legible?
Challenge 6 - playing catch up
@young karma Just that tiny tweak and it looks great!
@granite carbon That text effect is awesome!
ha ha - thanks @edgy idol !!

@kindred kernel Mockup is looking good Gerard! Really liking the spooky text too. I’d suggest trying to boost up some of the values with a levels adjustment for the image minus the witches broom handle and face which is already quite bright. Might help balance our the values a bit more and show the rest of the scene a bit more clearly. Might also help to make the text a touch smaller so it’s not crowding the edges of the frame so much. Nice work!
Xhallenge 7
@keen granite There definitely seems to be a ton of possibilities with Adobe Capture and brushes. Really liking the color scheme on this one, very calming feel overall. The clean shapes give it a nice balance as well. My only suggestion would be to maybe bring the text down a few notches and/or resize it so that the tail of the G overlaps the circle shape. Might give it a little more depth and get rid of the tangent that is currently there. Looks good, nice work on the mockup too!
Edit: I saw the change with the text moved away, looks good!
@glad steppe Very cool! I like the dramatic lighting effect you got with the window shape. Definitely sets a tone for the book. If The Door is the title of the book, I think it might help to make it a bit more prominent. I’d even think it might be good to make it larger, and have a solid red color like the Author’s name has. Might balance out the bottom a bit, as well as be a nice repeated element of that red in addition to making the title stand out stronger. Just some thoughts. Nice work 😄
@hearty wharf Ooh, really love what you did here! It may be quick, but I think the design is really effective. Really love how you handled the text, and the overlapping of the frame with the shark looks good. Mock up is looking good too. Nicely done!
@young karma The mock up looks good! Really cool to see that texture on the design. Really nice work with the title’s texture. It ties it in nicely to the image. This is more of a personal preference but it might balance the image a bit more to have the author’s name moved down just a bit. I really like the simplicity yellow/white and black of this cover, works really well!
@visual girder Very cool! I like the mockup on the soft cover book. The cover looks good and in perspective, but the title of the book doesn’t look like it matches the perspective of the rest of the mock up. That might be an easy fix with a perspective transform. Nice job Asu!
@lime meadow Nice work Fani! I really like the image and colors you used. The red text makes for a really nice contrast too. It might help to apply a cooling filter to the axe handle, or even just desaturate it a bit so it looks a little more like it fits in the scene, while still getting a little color temperature contrast to draw the eye. Might also help to crop the image at the edges too so the white border doesn’t compete with the contrast of the image as much. Looking good!
@vague vortex Nice job! I like the simple graphic color scheme and style you got in this image! My only suggestion would be to sharpen up the images of the bed and red figure. The text looks good and really smooth, but the graphics in the middle have a jagged aliased edge. If that was all sharpened up it might look a little more clean and consistent. Also blending the white of the bed into the white border might look a bit better. The currently negative shape made by the black looks a bit odd and is a bit distracting. Might just be cleaner to merge them. Night work!
@willow nebula Really liking the graphic style of Day 6! My girlfriend and I have been watching through various scary movies this month, and we were talking about watching this one next. I think it might help to match the color and sharpness of the horns and tail to the text. Clean, sharp, white shapes. Currently the styles seem to clash a bit since one has softer edges which breaks that graphic feel. Might make the whole image a little more cohesive. Looks good 😄
@young karma Nice work, that’s definitely an interesting look with the bright colors. I think it might help to darken down the yellow just a bit. It might balance the image out since it’s so close to the brightest color currently, to be a little closer to the text and act as a mid tone between the two. Nice job Riyaz!
@honest gorge I really like what you did with the the text warping effect to make it look underwater. The blue and yellow color scheme work really nicely together as well. The mock up looks good too!
@fast moth Looking good Camilo! I like the red/black colors, definitely gets a scary mood across. Currently the design looks a bit top heavy. I think maybe you could bring the eye and blood down a bit. You could even use the space at the bottom for an author's name. I think a little bit of both might help. Good work!
@fallow bough Really nice work Ken! I love the strong silhouette with the green background. The whole cover has a solid cohesive look to it!
@fringe thicket Nice work Chocolita! I like the simple look of the book cover. I think it might help to move the "Misery" text up a bit, it might help to balance out the image a bit. I wonder if making the author's name red as well might make the whole thing more cohesive since there isn't currently another white element in the design. Just some thoughts. Looking good!
@young karma The Dune book cover is looking solid! You got some really nice visual balance to this image as well. I think it might help to present the design on a more neutral background other than white, or crop it out completely, just to avoid the intense contrast of the white. The design is looking really good, nice work!
@fossil widget Looking good! The style of the letting is looking really cool. I should have this as a poster on my wall for some daily motivation, hah. It almost seems like it could be cool to have some element below the text with the wavy style of the top text to tie the whole style difference together and balance it out. Nice work!
Thanks @bleak fossil 😊
Gave +1 Creative Carma to SamPetersonArt
@keen granite Challenge #4 is looking solid! It's great to see all the source images and how you got the texture. The overall composite looks really good! Makes for a really strong silhouette against the black background. The text fits really nicely too!
@scenic summit I think the sharp edges definitely give it a bit of a dangerous look which seems fitting for that book. Looks good, nice work!
@forest ivy Your Day 5 book cover looks great! I really like the white text over the image, and the different text styles give it some real interest. The whole design looks really solid, it looks like it could a professional book cover. Really nice job on this challenge!
@sturdy vault Making brushes can definitely be a lot of fun, Adobe Capture is a really interesting way to experiment too with all the possibilities. I think the hand drawn text with brushes often works best with big brush strokes on one or two large words. The smaller text might work better as a normal font. That can also give the hand drawn text some nice contrast and really make it stand out. Good job!
@bleak fossil Thanks

@bleak fossil . I'm not sure this was for me. my cover for day 6 was the "Fog" one (black and white). Or perhaps are you talking over day 5, with the mouse ?
"@young karma The mock up looks good! Really cool to see that texture on the design. Really nice work with the title’s texture. It ties it in nicely to the image. This is more of a personal preference but it might balance the image a bit more to have the author’s name moved down just a bit. I really like the simplicity yellow/white and black of this cover, works really well!"
@young karma Sorry, I think my use of the word yellow was confusing. The fog almost seemed to have a slight yellow tint to it, but it could just be my monitor. But I realize when I say yellow it probably sounds like a legitimate saturated yellow, hah. I just meant the simple color scheme.
Had to catch up with challenge day 6. Turned out like this:
@bleak fossil Ow, ok. Now I understand.
It's true, it's a "warm" (yellowish) black and white which I first thought was in contradiction with the scary theme but, it works, indeed, wel and didn't needed a "cold" adjustement layer as I first thought.
Thanks for your feedback

I might try again later with something more textured to get a higher displacement, but I think this was a (subtle) good start - warped the letters and the red ... um ... highlights.

@fallow bough Very smart idea! I would suggest you rotate IT on the shirt just a little bit anti-clockwise to match his body.
@fast moth I love your design, but as Chris said, make the yellow text bigger and make it either red or white, that'd be great!
Not a keeper but fun
