So our party are currently in Animar also known as the spirit realm filled with well spirits (not your dead people kind but more Avatar the last Airbenders vibes) where each spirit embodies different emotions!

This plane has some special rules like other planes of existence normally do, firstly healing is empowered as while material plane dwellers are in this plane they are here in the form of their soul and therefore what their character would most desire to look like, but the second rule is if you drop to 0 hitpoints, you die!!! (No death saves)

Our party accidentally entered this plane of existence and are trying to find their way out think being lost in the Feywild vibes where they’re very lost! They’ve had a few fights against evil spirits, found a good place called the crossroads and effectively met the God of this plane and ‘befriended them’

Last session we had a new player join the party and he had a compass that leads to the nearest portal, it was used to explain him being able to enter this plane of existence and give a bit of direction on how to leave. The party follows it and it leads them to a cave than then leads to a dark subterranean lake in which the compass keeps pointing deeper.

Being in this space they awake a colossal sized hostile spirit of gluttony that sees the party and starts chasing them wanting to feast upon them, we enter a very high tension chase sequence simulated through combat during which I was clear both through size of token and above this table that this thing is not to be fought.

It was going fantastic until they started to try and fight it and quite well however 2 players dropped to death saves and so did a DNPC and we did death saves as normal (in the high tension moment I forgot about the rules of the plane but still did the empowered healing)

The problem lies that they made it away with only 1 DNPC death and we ended session but following the rules of the plane which was reminded by one of the players immediately after session ended, we should have 2/4 PC’s dead and 1/2 NPC’s dead. I don’t know what to do as if I say they survived then it removes the high stakes accompanied by the plane and fear factor that it’s meant to have especially the deeper you go!

TLDR: forgot the special rules of a plane in the heat of a stupid decision by players and 2 players should be dead by all rules of the universe when they aren’t and dunno how to rule it for next session

How about "you would have died, but I the spirit of (something) saved you, but in return you must do a task for me for I now hold your souls in this place"
