I'm planning on running a Halloween One Off tomorrow and want some help figuring out monsters I should run against the party. The scenario is that the players are professors of a magic academy and heard a disturbance of creatures chasing the kids on a trick or treating night. While the kids will all be fine, the teachers (players) will have to battle it out against mages of a rival school or magic-using demons/monsters. I am looking for some ideas for a hard/deadly encounter in a mage vs. mage battle

That's a lot of firepower. I'd consider doing something like a Necromancer Wizard who is working with a Daemogoth, and just a lot of attendant undead and fiend minions to create chaos and danger for the neighborhood.

#

If it were me, I'd make the main challenge damage control. That is, create a situation where the Mages have to think carefully about how they use their (fairly vast) powers in cramped, urban quarters where innocent people are in the fray.

Mmm good point.

Part of it being a one off is I really need to learn high level magics. I never got to play D&D for anything higher thatn a 7th level campaign and even then its very brief. I now DM a 10th level and my players are far exceeding my capabilities in combat 😦

My hope was to design a fight thats not only stupid fun but would be able to exploit just magic and mages so i can start to learn more various spells and how they can be used

#

That is to say, i have 0 care if they live or die and neither do thay

Yeah, and I think given that I'd just make the challenge not be about spell-slinging, as such.

mmm. so you think i let them play the mages and i play the non-casters. Let their use teach me?

On the one hand, sure, design the encounter for the PCs, but also beyond general challenge rating, don't think about the PCs.

#

No, you don't have to learn anything except how to run the NPCs.

#

All you need to know are the statblocks for the bad guys.

timber marten
#

True, then what kind of baddies should i go against players who are restricted to full casters, range focus only

#

btw i should mention they are all super gunhoe about this. They love doing these one offs mid campaign as a way to essentially throw caution to the wind and i can turn up the difficulty.

#

My thought is now i should have 1-2 mages as "bosses" and some minions who will either close gaps or be ranged harrassment. Maybe something invisible?

sorry, i should clarify

#

the players are restricted

Oh, I see.

timber marten

No the monsters. I told them they are all level 10, Bards, Warlocks, clerics, sorcers or wizards only. There are about 5 of them

Well, what I said above is that - a necromancer and a demon who have a lot of undead, fiend, and possessed minions.

timber marten
#

agreed. I like the theme especially so not i just gotta figure out stat blocks

vestal seal
#

Yeah, that one is perfectly serviceable

#

there's another in VGM and still another in MPMM

#

The Daemogoth I mentioned is in Strix

#

Then I'd just sprinkle in zombies, skellies, ghouls, ghasts, and/or whatever low CR fiend will terrorize the citizenry.

#

If it were me, I'd have some citizens "possessed" and just using an undead statblock.

#

Then, just do the Thriller video

timber marten
#

that.... would actually be perfectly light hearted

#

and i love it

#

what the.. heck discord/

#

I send a link and it deletes it

#

Well i can't seem to post a link so heres a screen shot. This the Daemogoth you meant?
