Abstract

By introducing a new equipment crafting system, players can create equipment with specs that continuously grow and a wide range of skills. This allows players to design equipment in the form they desire and obtain equipment with their preferred appearance. I would like to hear various opinions on this system.

Motivation

  • To reduce the excessive cost burden caused by the repetitive addition of world content.
  • The addition of diverse content has led to an increased demand for various types of equipment setups.
  • To overcome the limitations of the current system, where equipment appearance is determined by its specs, and to allow players to choose appearances that suit their preferences.

Rational

  • Establishment of a system that grows repeatedly with a long-term goal.
  • Breaking away from the constraints of building content environments based on predefined specifications.
  • Creation of NFTs that reflect one's preferences to the maximum extent in both appearance and performance.

Specification

Crafting Materials

The materials needed for crafting equipment are "Scrolls" and "Circles."

  • Scroll (Short for Design Scroll):
    • Obtained through Monster Collection (NCG - Staking).
    • Tradable.
  • Circle (Short for Circle of Fate)
    • Can be obtained as stage rewards, world boss rewards, and first-clear rewards from adventure boss content.
    • Tradable.

Crafting Process (Flow)

  1. Workshop: Perform basic tasks required for crafting equipment.
  2. Custom Craft: Set the desired appearance and stats of the equipment.
  3. Craft: Create the equipment based on the configured settings.
  4. Relationship Added: Produce more powerful equipment through repeated increases in intimacy.

Detailed Crafting Menu

  • Weapons: Displayed with animations.
  • Necklaces, Rings, etc.: Displayed with the image of the item.

When crafting equipment, detailed information about the equipment to be crafted is displayed:

  • Equipment Information:
    • Name (e.g., Custom + Weapon Name format)
    • Expected Block
    • Experience Points to be Gained
    • Level Requirement to Equip
    • Total Craft Count for the equipment crafted in this appearance
  • Equipment Option Information:
    • Basic Stats
    • Sub-stat CP Range
    • Random Attribute (randomly determined from None, Fire, Water, Wind, or Earth)
    • Skill List
      • Custom equipment has a 100% chance to acquire skills, and the skill list and probability are determined based on the type of equipment.
  • Required Materials:
    • Scrolls + Circles are required by default.
    • NCG or additional materials may be required once when reaching certain intimacy levels.

Custom Equipment Crafting Features

  • Relationship System: The avatar gains "Relationship" points based on the number of times it is crafted.
    • Each custom craft increases relationship by 1.
    • As relationship increases beyond a certain point, the selectable appearances and sub-stat CP that can be obtained increase.
      • Create equipment that best fits the strategic meta you wish to adopt.
  • Sub-stat Distribution Method:
    • The total sub-stat CP is determined randomly during crafting.
    • CP is distributed according to predetermined stat ratios based on the randomly determined options.
    • The final stats are determined by applying a CP conversion formula.
  • There are unique appearances that can only be selected through the random appearance selection.
  • More than 30 new appearances will be added, revealed for the first time through custom crafting.

Expected Schedule

  • September 6: Preview net open testing begins (9c) - Play with the community.
  • September 13: Collect community feedback and distribute the second build.
  • September 23: Final version development completion and QA start.
  • September 30: Mainnet release.

Backwards Compatibility

  • A new custom equipment crafting action will be added, and all nodes will need to be updated to interpret this action.
  • No additional migration is required.

Yes, to keep the NCIP from becoming overly complex, I only included the Custom Craft section for now. However, to make the most of this feature, additional functionalities have been added, such as adding crafting slots, batch completion of equipment during crafting, and adding material items during grinding.

This might be due to the fact that only custom crafting of the NCIP is available. Upgrading at the moment does nothing, which might be intentional.
I tried to Upgrade and see if the chain would reject the request, it seems it allowed it. As I got a +0 carrot back and the rest vanished 😛

The desired design is for CIRCLE to be collectible by actively engaging with the game's content (Adventure Boss, World Boss, Stages), while SCROLL is intended to be obtainable only through Monster Collection, allowing top stakers to sell it at a lower price. Additionally, since grinding custom equipment returns materials, it is recommended to grind equipment that does not meet satisfactory specs.
However, the feature for CIRCLE to drop from World Bosses is still under development, so some have been added to staking rewards. CIRCLE also drops from stages 250, 300, 350, and 400.

Yes, as you mentioned, there are many issues to consider when allowing direct image uploads, such as copyright and age ratings. We are currently studying various approaches to benchmark a proper flow for reviewing and approving such uploads.

As for "relationship," it refers to the concept where players provide special materials to a new NPC blacksmith for Custom Craft. By repeatedly crafting with the blacksmith, the relationship between the player and the blacksmith grows. Within this developed relationship, there is a chance to produce better equipment. We recognize that the narrative behind this concept might not have been fully conveyed, which can lead to some subtle misunderstandings, as also observed during internal testing.

For the recent test, we wanted to gather feedback on the balance, so we didn't supply enough materials initially. However, to better manage the enthusiasm at the beginning, we've decided to check the balance of resources toward the end and made the following adjustments:

Staking: Modified to obtain 1 material per 1 deposit.
Stages: Adjusted to acquire 10 pieces of both types of materials from stages 250, 300, 350, and 400.
Unfortunately, setting up a faucet is taking some time, so we made these changes instead. Please note that aside from the materials obtained through staking, all other materials are currently non-tradeable. With this in mind, we would appreciate it if the top stakers could register these materials in the shop. Thank you for your cooperation!

For reference, it wasn't a bug that the "carrot" isn't random. We wanted to see how players would engage with crafting when some of the unique outfits are set to be non-random. This was done intentionally to gather insights.

One things that's very big is that, to acquire these circles and stuff won't be easy.

It's staking or doing some content right. So even if these equips will be "stronger". You will still need to beat said content to earn them.

Currently, SPELLs have about 1/6th the impact on the order of usage compared to regular attacks. However, we recognize that using SPELLs can still be burdensome, which is why we're considering the idea of crafting equipment without SPELLs attached. Instead of developing features that improve gameplay or entertainment. You constantly create new equipment that makes old equipment obsolete. Constantly changing equipment as a burden for all players, forcing them to continuously pay to continue playing is just an extreme solution to maintain the ecosystem.

=> Existing equipment should be used as raw materials to craft new equipment. Minimum and maximum stats or skill crafting rates should be determined by input materials (normal crafting equipment).

In the past, players spent a lot of money to buy equipment with maximum stats. After each new equipment appeared, it became worthless. This made them reluctant to buy. Recently, buyers only buy equipment at the minimum price and rarely care about the quality, because they know they are just renting equipment.

The big problem is not the spell, but the way it comes into play and how it is activated in combat.
I think that equipment that has a spell should be considered a mythical item and not just another item that ends up being useless against an item that doesn't have a spell.
What causes this is the fact that spells activate when you enter combat.

What happens now is that, when you enter combat, you spend 11 turns activating a spell and then you attack.

In my opinion, the turn in which the spell is activated should also include an attack or introduce a damage percentage for the spell when it is activated.

  • Arena/WB/AB NCG rewards are considerably higher during early period of new item launch
  • People are incentivized to use NCG to rank higher in competitive game modes and earn higher (ideally not in a deterministic way)
  • Some players profit, others suffer losses

It is difficult to design a system where you put effort (time+NCG) once, then you can just stop playing the game and if you return 1 year later, your items will retain the same amount of value

There has to be a form of "natural" deprecation in the value of items over time since this is a live service game with an active economy ecosystem

I think that the team has been doing steps towards the right direction lately, we just really lack a good incentive to push our items and invest into our characters as much as possible

Considering how long it takes to get new features/new worlds. The items in question have long had their use. This issue is exaggerated somewhat. W7 -> W8 was a year gap where the same equipment was used it was extremely boring, 6-7months in you are done with the whole world 7.

The new gear is normally so strong that it makes the previous gearset immediately obsolete. This was also not the case with world 8 gear. Certain items from W7 were actually still better than W8 items until you had enough fodder to make the w8 item +15 or higher. (especially belts/necklace's). So by this we can already see that the devs already made changes when designing/implementing w8 so that previous world items don't immediately fall of the cliff., which is good. Not to mention the changes to the upgrading system. W8 made upgrading and it's costs significantly more bearable. So I'd say we are moving into the right direction.

Release dates for worlds as a reference:
New content/gear is required to make the game feel alive and fresh.

World 8 was released: 2024-03-27 11:00 AM KST
World 7 was released: 2023-03-06 11:00 AM KST.
World 6 was released: 2022-08-23 10:3 AM KST.

The problem is that the top players of Heimdal went too far with their upgrades, way outside of what the game requires. We had players finish stage 400 with under 20m cp (after the nerfs, that's true), and those kind of upgrade levels can be covered by the game rewards

Thank you for sharing your feedback on the balance. As you might have expected, the current situation largely stems from a mismatch of information due to overlapping test environments. For instance, the first "relationship" range, currently set from 1 to 5, will be adjusted to 1 to 50 in the mainnet balance. Similarly, what is currently set to 100 will be adjusted to around 1000 or 5000, aiming for a more future-oriented balance. I'll test it, but removing the Circle from the Monster Collection rewards is going to change a lot. Only a few people will be able to get the items at the start, which will prevent a rush for the new equipment. However, very few people will complete it quickly. This has its advantages for big players (whales), but it also has its downsides in general. I'm not sure if there should be another form of balance.

Still, in my opinion, it's a good adjustment, and I look forward to seeing more opinions.

Overall Cost Considerations

  • The balance adjustments for testing are different from what is intended for the final implementation:

    • Extra Crafting Slots
    • Staking Reward and Interval
    • Custom Craft Equipment Level Requirements
  • The crafting materials for custom equipment are planned to follow these guidelines:

    • Scroll:
      • Can be obtained from Monster Collection rewards and grinding.
      • Top staker players will have limited opportunities to acquire Circle materials, resulting in excess quantities of Scrolls. They can sell these in the shop to obtain Circle materials from other players.
    • Circle:
      • Can be obtained from World Bosses, Adventure Bosses, stage drops, and grinding.
      • Primarily obtainable by players who actively participate in content. Although the amount obtained will vary based on content proficiency, the difference compared to Scrolls is expected to be minimal.
      • Players not aiming for direct crafting can sell materials in the shop to purchase Scrolls, other materials, or finished equipment.

Items Visuals

  • Practicing to accommodate various styles as basic options for modding.
  • Continuously monitoring and adjusting the value of existing style equipment and new style equipment, with plans to add more.
  • A feature that allows players to see the appearance of custom equipment even when wearing a full costume is also in development.

Balance of Custom Equipment

  • Various checks are being conducted on new spells, the CP of equipment, the grade and level restriction values of equipment, and other parameters. We are considering your suggestions to find the appropriate balance.
  • We are also considering options to craft equipment without spells, and we are preparing features that will allow players to quickly find such equipment in the shop.
    • Initially, all custom equipment will have "Custom" in their name upon release, so you can filter and access them accordingly.
  • All these balances are being checked under the following guidelines:
    • The update scheduled for next year, which includes the 9th World, will mark the end of the regular content. Afterward, the direction of World content is still being explored.
    • Ultimately, after a significant amount of time, Custom Craft is expected to become the final form of the equipment crafting experience.
      • However, due to the increasing cost of crafting at the final stage, it is expected that high-tier items will not be easily available to all users.

May I suggest something, as previewnet will have going forward similar balancing values. In case of equipments that are limited by weekly lockouts. For example custom crafting the rely on staking for one of the crafts. It might be beneficial to provide a bulk of items to players so they can test the whole system instead of just the first few crafts. For example, the issue where higher level relationship crafts were weaker than lower level relationship crafts, may have been spotted in the last previewnet if had more scrolls to allow us to reach higher relationship levels before previewnet finished.
