Split the guns into major components (barrel, foregrip, sightbar/cover (the thing missing on stashed ak's), stock, and receiver (the "base" of the weapon).
These parts would have a few varities each (longer barrel, foregrip with rails, reciver with increased fire rate, better stock).
This is already planned as far as I know (based on the dev diary). I am not sure how completely it has been implemented, but given the stashed weapons it must be pretty close.

Stashed weapons could have damaged/missing parts with randomized stats (and permanently reduce durability).
Players can then salvage good parts from stashed weapons and/or buy new parts to improve their primary weapons.
Durability can be applied to each part separately, with different effects (barrel effects velocity and accuracy, receiver effects reliability and fire rate, stock/foregrip effect recoil, rails effect sight alignment, etc)
Finding gun parts alone and/or having enemies drop anomalous gun parts is also a possibility.

This was probably the plan from start huh.

They said it will not be as detaile because of game performance. In H3VR with modular gun mods it works fine though.

CM originally wanted this, but they announced this beta that it couldn’t happen because of performance

Yep, 0.12 dev diary: Full disassembly is too labor intensive, but they want modular weapons
