#What Drone Should I Start With?
625 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Depends what you want to do but the avata is not recommended
oh
How are you hoping to fly? Cinematic/photography, or fpv?
fpv but some good quality shots in-between
Well then I would recommend checking out the radios in the https://discord.com/channels/536623076796923924/1144567226670788639 and then getting a simulator such as velocidrone and practicing
Also, what is your overall budget?
i have tryp fpv
i used my xbox controller on it
around 900 cad for the googles and everything
An fpv controller will be very different so I would recommend that
Ok that works 👍
What kind of area are you hoping to fly in
How big?
fairly big
Ok
lots of space
Well I think starting on a tinywhoop is always a good idea and is relatively inexpensive and very durable
You can use the same controller/goggles for both
im looking for a one to build i think with a friend
Ohh
You could each build a tinywhoop in a weekend and be completely set up with that budget for 2x sets of gear I think
If you go on the lower end of things
If you want to build a bigger drone, a 3.5 inch drone is gonna be the largest that is recommended for a beginner
And it will still be very fast if you don’t have fpv experience
Experienced people here love their 3.5s
I’d love my 5” if I got it working lol. But yes 3.5” are a blast
how much battery life would it have
About 5 min
Which is the norm for fpv😅
That would be to heavy to work well unfortunately
Also, if the weight wasn’t an issue, just using a battery 2x the size would be a more efficient way to do that
should me and my friend buy a prebuilt for now instead
OH wait
Did you mean multiple
?
In that case yes and that is what we do
mb
what did you think?
Yes people usually have like 5-8 batteries they switch between
damn
He said multipole so I was thinking smth else
ahh so should we get prebuilts?
If you want, but building is a great experience and you will learn how to fix it
alr this is who im building with
Yes
is it hard to build
I think a crux35 hdzero and the hdzero box goggles and a radiomaster boxer would be a great thing as a beginner and would all be great gear that can be used for a long time
bet
No, you land when the battery voltage goes to like 3.4 volts
then what is he talking about
Make sure it’s all elrs
Not sure😅 they won’t fall unless you go way to low
It’s pretty linear at the end
Wait for someone more experienced to chime in before you buy
I’m talking about if your just not paying attention to voltage (sometimes it happens) and bam, free fall
(Meaning someone awesome listed them and I just linked it)
Oh yeah, sorta, just pay attention
If you ignore voltage and just fly, you'll notice that throttle becomes less and less effective. Once the thrust is less than the weight of the drone, you'll just slowly descend at 100% throttle until you reach the ground. You could probably keep the props running till the voltage gets low enough to reboot the flight controller, but I'm fairly sure that would be well after the quad loses the power to stay airborne
If you fly to the point that you can barely lift off though, you've already likely destroyed the battery. Below a certain voltage, they get so internally damaged that they can't hold much of a charge, and eventually can become a fire hazard when trying to charge them back up
An experienced person is here and I gtg, have fun getting into fpv
in english pls?
battery slowly dies
drone slowly loses thrust
drone slowly descends
battery kaput forever
thanks!
man iono enough to tell them what to buy\
Already done
Unless you think otherwise
I’m a newbie
If you're eager to get in the air IRL, I'd definitely recommend a tinywhoop or toothpick class drone
ah
That’s what I was saying in the beginning to 👍
I don't know anything about digital but
- yeah the Boxer or Pocket if you're low on budget are both great, make sure to get the ELRS versions
- a 3.5" is a fairly powerful quad. Can be dangerous in a park if you're not experienced
whats a good tinypoop drone
perfect, yeah you're probably about as experienced as I am haha
I've heard that the Air65 and Air75 are good
wont it be too windy to fly
tinypoop drones arnt alot of cash too
yeah the wind can push it around fairly easily, but larger quads like 3.5"+ are extremely powerful. If you're not experienced, you can easily end up hitting someone at the park
it wouldn't be like bumping into them with a paper plane. It would be more on the level of uhh
throwing a heavy rock at them as hard as you can
can you throw a rock at 60mph?
wb cinawhoops?
Same frame as 4.45g Air75, this bunny whoop brings you to meet more sweet friends!!😆😆😆

...
they're extremely heavy and perform terribly. not much to want in them outside of very specific commercial use cases
i got my licence the other day aswell
yea these are probably set up "interactions"
I would never do that to strangers with any drone. not even for physical safety but out of respect for their space and privacy
so should we start by buying a radiomaster controller
yeah 100f
drones have the "spying" reputation as is
an ELRS one, yeah, and a simulator
true lol
800 for a single shared setup right? not like two separate transmitters or nothin
👍
I'm tempted to recommend the Boxer cause it's a real nice radio
but
i'm not 100% sure if that would allow for a full on digital 5" setup in the future
but
the radio is one of the most permanent, important pieces of equipment, so you might want to get one good one and keep it for life
then buy a tinywhoop or toothpick and analog goggles
then in the future save up some more for a 5" and all that when you're more advanced
so which radio then
Pocket or Boxer depending on how much you wanna save
i cant find the pocket on amazon
you generally don't want to get FPV things on amazon. there are dedicated online FPV shops that are much better
send me a good place to get it
there are different shops depending on where you're located, and that's probably a question for #🧾shopping-advice, I'm not familiar with FPV shops that well
i would be very wary of local shops, they're really good at selling you old overpriced equipment and outdated standards lol
you'll end up with some noname tinywhoop and some FrSky radio
k we gonna get the pocket controller
cool, it should last you forever (or, at least, until you want to upgrade lol)
(hence mentioning the Boxer)
(or uhh the GX12 thingy?)
(you might have the budget for those)
(up to you)
I cant find the pocket controller anywhere
Haha I just finished my first whoop, I’m sure you know more than I do, I’ve just read emelia answer so many questions I’ve retained some😅
do you know anything about this one
well that's exactly how i became helper LOL
"so, I read from others that [...]"
Haha neat
Did you look at all these?
if they do local pickups, they have some Pockets https://www.snhobbies.com/index.php?cPath=903_96_98_923
the pocket crush is a regular pocket but with pretty colors
And I believe you can upgrade the gimbals on the crush
I assume you can ship from us too right?
its out of stock tho
Oh yeah there ya go
i might get the white one
were going to go instore tomorrow
Cool 👍
i was thinking mint mist
Good luck to ya
Make sure to get the elrs, NOT the 4 in 1, the 4 in 1 has crappy elrs
what does elrs mean
i thought the 4in1 was non-elrs lol
I thought it did that too, mb, regardless don’t get it 😂
Looks like it
are these good
Not necessary
Oh also, just a little perk, there is a bunch of dumb little games on the rm pocket
i like it grippy bruh
samsies
It is stock
yoo games on the controller?
Express Long Range System, the radio "language" we all use. It uses more modern hardware and modulation than most others, so it has low latency and/or very long range.
Like pong and astroids and stuff😂
The pong is two player😂
W
One stick per person
Ikr
TIL. incredible
There’s even I tiny aweful fpv sim in it (DO NOT USE IT aside from for laughs)
lol
I wonder what else they could put on there 😏
is it like, 2d?
It shouldn’t 😂
like the dino game type thing
Basically😂
basically
It is actually 3d
You just can’t yaw😂
And it’s in angle mode
suboptimal
abhorrent
altogether, unsatisfactory
yes
what they do?
evidently
Yea😂
I believe so
both have identical stats
Yep
just different manufacturers, so yeah either works and one isn't in stock
why does it say samsung
because samsung makes 18650 batteries
fair enough'
enough for what
everything pham
no
min about 300 USD for the cheapest decent setup
for Pocket, good tiny whoop, cheap goggles, vifly whoopstor charger, some batteries, etc.
how do we charge these
plug a usbC cable into the bottom port of the Pocket
the top usbc port is for data transfer and for using it as a USB joystick
ok thanks
goodnight
@summer aurora @hazy linden
Niceee
Got the transparent
Mint mist
Have fun with it!
Yeah thanks for all the advice
Yea np👍
Btw, Bottom usbc port is for charging, top one is for a sim
Ok good to know thanks
Drone simulator fuel
Either of y'all got Minecraft Java?
Yes I do I used to play so much
I saw a video on YouTube about that
yeah it's not a very realistic sim but it's super fun
i mean, it does use acro mode with adjustable rates and everything, it's just that the weight of the quad feels kinda floaty or something
Velocidrone is a great realistic simulator fyi
I got tryp fpv
how do i connect the controller
for sims you usually plug it in via USB then on the screen of the radio, you select to use it as a joystick or input device, something along those lines
everything is inverted is it supposed to be like that?
inverted can mean may things tbf lol - what exact stick movement translates to what drone movement?
right stick down should normally translate to drone pitch up
its inverted like what im used to with the controller
you'd have to answer this to be sure but yeah aviation controls are normally the opposite of what video games use
it spins me
you've got 3 directions of spin on a drone
which stick are you moving?
i used the ps5 controller on the sim
right one
are you moving it up/down, or left/right?
when I fly it up it goes backwards
and when i fly it down it goes fowards
in a spin
are you pushing the right stick upwards? and the drone's tilting downwards?
like, the view rotates upwards, right?
you go from seeing the horizon to seeing the sky?
like I said, there are 3 axes of spin, and two directions of spin each, so it gets kinda confusing if you don't use exact wording 😅 but I'm pretty sure what you're describing is a "pitch up" movement
imagine you impale the drone with a sword straight through its side, then spin it on the sword so that the front end goes upwards
that would be pitch up lol
that movement is normally done by pointing the right stick down. Make sure that's what is happening on your end
this describes the controls on the transmitter side
and here are the movements on the drone https://i.redd.it/yibdga6ugg221.gif
This image is missing throttle, which works differently on planes (as opposed to helicopters or quadcopters) - on quads, throttle will push the drone directly upwards (like towards where the blue arrow's pointing)
oh, and make sure you're practicing in acro mode. it works very differently from angle or horizon modes, which are not generally used with fpv lol
i inverted it and its fine no
what should I get next now that I have the radiomaster pocket
Velocidrone
Did that cost money?
yyyyeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssss.
what parts should we get
Well I’m sure it will do
What type of drone do you want to build?
Whats like all the parts we need
https://oscarliang.com/quadcopter-hardware-overview/
-# someone please find me that link to the updated vitroidfpv one
the specific parts are 100% dependent on what type of build you're making, which is dependent on what type of flying you want to do, which is dependent on the space and cost limitations you have
This is the time where you get to pick what type of drone you want
So id advise researching different types and sizes
were thinking 5 inch quadcopter fpv
Alright then, that’s a very dangerous start but it’s doable, make sure you practice lots on the sim
Your sure building is how you want to go?
yeah we coped a soldering iorn
Alright then
Used vitroids 5 inch build website
I forgot what’s it’s called
Maybe someone will link it
Boom
Found it
I don’t have a 5 inch so I wouldn’t know, but if it’s on there it should be solid
should we just buy a kit idk whats compatible and shi
like a diy one
I’d say just look at the voltages and roll with the build you picked on there
I’ve never heard of any kits that are actually worth the $
this is where the learning starts lol
it's not that difficult though
I'd recommend the vitroidfpv site and youtube channels like joshua bardwell
That’s what they picked the build off of, all the stuff they picked was on the vitroidfpv website, I assume it should work together then right?
tbh I have no idea but even if they're good parts they're not necessarily well matched parts
other than voltages and currents, there's also matching the lipo/gross weight to motors (voltage, kv), to props
Yeah I just trust vitroid much more than myself😅
Yep
fair, same lol
@sullen cloak will all this stuff on your website work together?
Sorry for the ping
I'd probably swap out the Sector 5, I'll need to update the list with some alternatives. In the meantime I'd probably go with the Speedybee Mario 5
Alright thanks 👍
@wispy rampart @hidden pulsar you’re lord and savior has blessed you with advice

what about this just sector five on this too?
Yeah, use that in your original build instead of the sector 5 and you should be all good
OH
HO?
Also buy some practice solder boards
ok thanks
I know the original list will work cause vitroid said so but any changes here besides the Mario 5 I can’t say fs, but I can guess that it would work
ok we each had our own builds
do i need a elrs receiver for the drone?
and the googles?
holy glaze
SpeedyBee Mario 5 DC Advanced Version
is the one were looking at would that wirk
work
does it matter what type of speedybee we pick?
crimson that was an impressively fast ping and delete
but please let's not ping every single moderator out of the blue for no reason, thank you
he he he haw
mb mb
here's your answer straight from the same page
balright
2 hours you had to scroll down for the record
alright lil homie
Should I get HDzero goggles or walksnail L
What video system is your drone using?
Caddx ratel 2 I think
Well that’s analog so you have to get analog goggles
Although hdzero box goggles have analog aswell
Ima change to digital It seems to have better image quality
The caddx ratel 2 doesn't seem like it's image quality is terrible tho
So idk what to do
Analog is a lot cheaper than digital. Like a lot cheaper
Unless u get walksnail
Which is still kinda pricey
Yeah
The one deal breaker for me was the bad image quality which before resorted my to dji
And it has in the range of 20 to 50 milliseconds latency
While analog is essentially 0
What's a good digital video system and goggles
This isn't true at all
Meaning like u don’t see a difference
analog latency varies WILDLY
Essentially ***
What about the video for the drone?
there are tons of cameras where you have more latency than you would with Walksnail or DJI
Yup
Like before I wanted the caddx
So it’s gonna be about 10 to 20 milliseconds latency with an air 65
With using elrs
It's it that noticeable?
Analog has no latency
?
The 60 milliseconds
But air 65 is analog
Which can work with the box goggles Hdzero
But if your getting the Hdzero box goggles u might as well just get a Hdzero whoop
What do u want
Analog does have latency in the way you are using it
K fine
again, don't spread misinformation
But it varies between different equipment
K I’m sorry
same for digital
If you're going with HDZero goggles and don't want analog, dji or walksnail then just get the Mobula6 or Mobula7 with the AIO5 in it, which is HDZero.
Any digital system
They sell separate video systems?
If I would suggest a whoop then get the meteor 75 with the DJI 04
Yes
There's not a simple best one, they all have aspects in which they shine or are better than each other
Ah
It strives more than most digital goggles (the goggles 3)
Better?
no because that doesn't actually say anything
I have them and they are great
So if I got a dji video system would I be forced to buy dji goggles or does it even work with them
Which goggles do u recommend then
Yes
U will be forced
Ok I wanted dji goggles anyway
If you picked DJI you are completely locked into DJI, can't use a different system without buying entirely different goggles. You also can't comfortably do tinywhoops yet.
Ummm
Yes u can
With whoops
I was planing to get dji anyway if it worked
Which drone do u want
Also
Are u gonna get the 04 pro?
Should I need dji controller
I alr have radio master pocket bought it recently
Do I need
no you basically want the radiomaster/jumper/anything with expresslrs
the dji controllers are basically junk in comparison
yes
U would need either an fc that comes with elrs built in or a separate elrs receiver in ur drone
Which is very easy
Whays an fc
Whats
Flight controller?
Flight controller
Add ons for what
All u need is an 04 and the n3 goggles or goggles 3
Ok if per say I didn't want to build a whole drone could I get a pre built with the 04
?
@gilded sluice
That's not a whoop
Yes
But they most likely wouldn’t be as powerful
And most of them are cinematic drones
Ah I'll build it with a tutorial
And good ones will be from 400 to 700 bucks
Ok
Damn
Sounds cool
I saw a 04 lite on Amazon https://a.co/d/6pou4LK
Not sure if it's the lite one
I think you instal it on the stacks
It won’t say lite it’ll just say DJI air unit
And the other one is DJI air unit 04 pro
This one goes for 270$
this is basically a scam fyi
But obviously a custom build if u do it right it’ll be allot better
if you buy all the parts on your own you are often hundreds cheaper
Yes basically
He wanted a tutorial or something
Do u have any suggestions?
all quadcopters are built the same
Yes that’s true
But who’s gonna help him know what to get
And also there are a lot of pre cautions that someone should know when building
I got the parts from vitroids website
Make sure a professional Lions them over
Looks *
ah ok cool
So I just need the erls conecter to put on the drone and rhays it to link them all right?
Thats
Yup that’s it
Great man thanks for everything
Just before u buy the goggles just ask around with more people
Np
About what?
Is that the lite or pro?
The goggles
If u should either get those or the goggles 3
What size drone are you doing?
Fr
Then you want the pro
Ohh alr
It's an expensive build but that's what you get for digital
4k 120fps is sick
Yep
Soooo many messages
It feeds off the main pack
can you sum up this conversation
What about for the whole thing
Including the frame and everything
Stacks
Motors
There is one battery for everything
And it will be 6s
Not sure what the ideal mah is but you can google that
I don’t know exactly what size to use, I don’t have a 5 inch
Ok I'll find it
It’s just a lipo battery.
That’s what powers the whole drone
If you are building a 5” then you should get a 6s battery
I saw a prebuilt 7.5 inch with the 04 I'm it alr so I might buy that
Asked chat gpt amd got some idea of which one would work
Pls don’t use chat gpt
You’ll just get wrong info
Not worth it long term
I don’t see anything
A 7.5 inch is way to big for a first drone, there is also many 5 inch drones with an 04 that you can buy prebuilt
I think it’s the drone that’s 7.5” not the prop
Oh alr
Never heard drones measured like that
Aside from tinywhoops
Ye, I’m guessing he prob read the description and it said the drone is 7.5”
Idk tbh
🤷♂️
It can be a 7.5 but for the price it’s gotta be the drone and not the prop
250$
Yea
hoarder sam
i guarantee its the prop
?
how do you not klnow hoarder sam
That’s 7.5”???
the wheelbase isint even 7.5
lol
why do you think thats 7.5
I don’t
