#DIY vs DJI (Look for more details in the post)

Hey yall, I am currently stuck in a tricky situation/dilemma. So initially I wanted to build my own drone, I was all for it, spent hours searching and watching and asking to get a workable build. But then I got convinced or more so double checked my decision, on the basis of some friends, and looked into the DJI FPV. And well its a really convincing and mind-boggling drone with all its fancy features and RTH features.

As I did more digging into the DJI, I noticed it's very prone to breaking with even the slightest of impacts into the grass even. That really brought my high for the DJI drone down. Paying the insane amount for DJI to fix broken arms and also to buy their expensive props, also is a big turn off.

The things I mentioned above, is fairly easily fixable by making by own drone. Since the frame would be carbon fiber, it will much stronger then the Plastic in the DJI drone. And it is also fairly easily fixable compared to something that comes built.

Now comes the dilemma, first I will state my purpose for this drone. I don't plan on doing many tricks or super fast movements or things in that arena, I mainly to get a drone to experience fpv and also to record and view scenery in my area from a birds eye view. I don't plan on doing any racing or like broken building races that there are videos for online. I want to be able to do them, like basic spins or dives. But nothing too performance heavy or fasts or things like that.

What I am looking for is image quality both on the drone and in the goggles. I want to be able to view what the drone is seeing with fairly good quality, which (from what I know) takes out the possibility of using Analog goggles. I would also like to have some of the features in the DJI such as/specifically the Return To Home. I want to be able to go a bit far, and not worry about loosing 1.5k instantly by accidently going out of range.

And now comes the pricing. In terms of price, the DJI would come around 1700 CAD with no dji care refresh, but the Fly More kit.

But if I went with my own DIY drone, it would be around 1200CAD - 1300CAD, with the build from the image below. (The goggles are undecided as the EV800D are analog and look pretty garbage).

So that is my situation that I am stuck in and have no idea what to do or go with.

#

The goggles I sent are just a placeholder, not going to go with that for sure

I can't help but notice that you are completely missing a flight controller and ESC

#

Everything else looks pretty good tbf

Oh yea, woops, I decided on these:

I'm going to advocate for building your own, and I am 100% that every other helper and admin in this server would be behind me on it

#

If you don't already have it, you'll need tools to solder with

But building your own teaches you how to fix and replace parts, just by doing it. CF drones are so much more durable. Also the DJI FPV drone flies like ass

I agree if you have budget build your own

#

And also get hota d6 pro instead of that charger

I feel like their wording indicates that a dji drone might be what's best for them. It really just depends on how much visual exploration they want to do vs the joy of acro flight. I'd typically push hard for someone to build their own but this does seem like a case where dji is certainly an option. I guess my point is yeah if you think doing dives and acro flight is really your interest then build a drone. But if that's secondary to having a drone that hovers perfectly, returns to home and doesn't have a lot of learning curve then i'd consider dji.

Even if that's the case, I would never advocate for the DJI FPV

#

Get a Mavic or something

#

Fuck the DJI FPV

What does that even mean?

trim sable

It exists

And if I were to go DIY but wanted similiar quality in video to the DJI, what changes would you guys recommend?

#

RTH is not great in Betaflight yet, but it's getting there. INav and Ardupilot are much better at it

#

DJI O3 Air Unit and Goggles 2

I believe the FC you have chosen is supported by both, so it'd be as easy as installing them on the FC

#

You cannot run them both simultaneously though, you only get to pick one

#

Obv you can switch if you want to, but you'd lose all settings

#

Oh ok, so I wouldn't need a GPS module or anything in that arena?

trim sable
#

... you would still need a GPS module in order to use GPS

#

You can't have RTH without a GPS

#

So you'll need a GPS

hidden sky
#

lol, ok thats what I was wondering.

#

But yea, thanks yall, I will try and make a build with the O3 and the dji goggles and see how much that would cost compared to the DJI FPV.

But thanks for the help!

#

I will be back with more questions

hmm, maybe, idk maybe if I budget a bit more, I have a feeling I can fit make diy and also get the camera quality and rth as dji. I will take some more time to think it through

#

Cause with the flymore kit even the dji is quite expensive
