#Motors Spin without arming, also, funny ESC noises.

Scare me half to death. A motor started twitching while doing an update on the VTX. Next time I plugged it in, I held the canopy and the motors went full speed. My controller/radio isn't even turned on!

Anyway, checked my connection looked in betaflight, watched the OSD while it was having it's little tantrum and no indicators of what is up. It keeps doing a weird sound where each motor sounds a different pitch and it goes around all the motors doing this a few times (attached). Also, it it doesn't finish it's initialization sounds usually.

I suspect it is a dead board? Barely had any flights on it. Flights were pretty uneventful, no hard crashes. The only bad thing that happened to it was I had my VTX hooked up through the DJI plugged and overloaded the 5v pin. Nothing happened, but I did run a pack though it before I noticed my mistake. Ran another pack through it after with no issue. Now it appears dead. At most I though I would of killed the USB diode, but not the whole board.

I have kind of the same problem

try updating the esc firmware I guess

could a low voltage do it? the board is 3s to 6s and I use 3s. i noticed on the bench one of the batteries went very low when this was happening. had some usb connection issues with teh board too. already ordered a new board but would like to fix the one one if i could

Hahaha haven't heard this sound in a long time on a quad

#

Those tones that it's playing mean the ESC is in PWM calibration mode

#

Need to switch your motor protocol to DSHOT

#

From the original BLHeli ops manual:

raw juniper
#

the quad is entering programming mode when the boot button is pressed whil powering it, right?

#

my boot button is gone because i had a crash but when it's not there it can't be "pressed" right?

vast crystal
#

That's not how that works. The ESC will only enter programming mode if it sees high-throttle PWM signal from the FC at start-up

#

Are you able to plug into a computer, or is the USB port destroyed too?

raw juniper
#

everything is fine except the button

Plug it into a computer and open up betaflight configurator. Go to the motors tab and check what this setting is

Just sending a video with no description of what you are trying to do tells me very little

raw juniper
#

sry, this is happening sometimes before arming (very scary)

vast crystal
#

The beeps sound to me like the same tone that's played when Betaflight is in failsafe mode

#

like it doesn't see any input from your radio

raw juniper
#

the antennas of my receiver look a bit broken at the connection point, but when the quad is armed it flyes perfectly fine

vast crystal
#

It's very weird to me that the ESC is going into programming/PWM calibration mode when you are configured for DSHOT. It should not do that, well, ever

raw juniper
#

Im not sure if its going in programming mode🤷‍♂️

vast crystal
#

Well the tones in the first video you sent are unmistakably programming mode

raw juniper
#

that's another person, im here because it's a similar problem

FFS

#

Fix your antennas. And if you still have issues with it after that, open another thread--don't take over help threads

I was in dshot mode I thought? Settings could of been changed though, I did reset the board when I installed the walksnail vtx. I was more concerned about the motors spinning while unarmed. I pulled off the walksnail vtx and have it updated with bluejay 96khz and BF 4.3.2 now and had it on the bench with a battery for a bit and not a twitch out of it. I'll add the walksnail vtx back on and see what happens. To confuse the issue, I had the vtx on the wrong 5v pad and it went through one of the protection diodes for the USB power and I ended up having to replace the diode. who knows what the real issue is, but seems to be working now. I did order a replacement board as I don't entirely trust this one right now...

I wouldn't either. Good skill replacing the diode, most people would have trashed the board. Ghost in the machine...

haha, it took me a few trys/hours. I was excited I had a 4.5v pad on the board for my walksnail vtx (which is sensitive to overvoltage and the boards 5V pads are actually 5.1V) so i used it not thinking it went through the usb voltage protection diode. I think it was a Zener on the board, which is weird. I replaced it with a Schottky which I scavenged off another board and all seems good. Not sure if that contributed to my weird issues. It actually went full throttle on the bench with the props still on, scared me pretty good! It had already been twitching so I had a good hold on it so no damage done. After the updates and the diode replacement I have tried to get it to act up again but nothing. Next step is to put the VTX back on and see if that does it. Otherwise, the board might fly again. One more motor twitch though and I'll replace it.
