help I don't know what I just created LMAO 😭 can someone explain this real quick hehe

There isnt really something like a ‘good’ anything. You create something that you fee firs your character. What would you like explained?

I wanna know about the saving throws and the skills thingy hehe 😅 i'm a little confused by it.

Ok so you have skill checks and resistances. Lets say that you want someone to do something fir you (an npc), your dm might ask you to make a persuasion check (because you are trying to persuade them to do something for you). You would roll your D20 (used for most checks) and add you persuasion skill to that. So lets say you roll a 10 and your persuasion skill is +3 according to your sheet, your total persuasion check is then 13. Now the dm would have a threshold set for how difficult it would be to persuade this person to do what you are asking. Lets say their threshold is 5 (so not very difficult to persuade them at all), you would make the check. But if their threshold was say (27) extremely difficult to persuade, you would fail and they would not do as you asked. Saving throws are made in defense. Lets say you met a monster that was trying to charm you (which is like a skill/ability), they would attack you and the dm would ask you to make, say, a constitution saving throw to resist the affect of the charm. Then you do the same thing as above -roll D20 and add your constitution modifier. Lets say you roll a 12 and then add your constitution modifier (+2), your total would be 14. Now lets say the creature rolled a 10 as an attempt to charm you. That is lower than your saving throw, so you resist being charmed. But if they rolled, say, an 18, that is higher than your saving throw and you cannot resist the effect. Thus you get charmed by the creature. This would also happen if someone cast a spell on you - say to try and blind you. Make sense?

I've heard dnd is really fun to play but it's really complicated and it need like heavy maths and calculations which I'm not good at, but other than that, I would love to customize my character and play dnd

If you can do basic maths, you can do it. Its literally just adding and subtracting dmg points. And you can use a calculator if you really need to but that is completely unnecessary at low levels since most numbers wont go over 50

also with a better backstory and stats coz...yeah dnd beyond gatekeeps stuff

Beyond is a very handy platform to use, especially for new players since they pretty much auto manage your character in terms of leveling up, rolls etc. makes it a lot easier to keep track of whats going on imo

I did my best to summarize Newt Scamander's suitcase, as featured in the "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" series,

It has this charm that allows the interior of the suitcase to be much larger than the exterior, effectively creating a pocket dimension within the suitcase.

In the movies, the suitcase opens to reveal a seemingly endless array of habitats and environments, each designed to house a variety of magical creatures. These habitats range from dense forests to arid deserts and even underwater environments. The creatures themselves are kept in special compartments within the habitats, each customized to meet the specific needs of the creature.

Newt is able to enter and exit the suitcase through a small opening on the side of the suitcase, which he can open using a special latch. The opening appears small from the outside, but once inside, Newt is able to navigate a sprawling labyrinth of habitats and magical creatures.

The suitcase also features a variety of protective measures, such as spells and charms, to prevent the creatures from escaping or causing harm to the outside world. Overall, Newt Scamander's suitcase is a marvel of magical engineering and allows him to carry his magical menagerie with him wherever he goes.

I think we can use this as a setting for any and all magical adventures
As long as we're careful about which animals we're putting in and what environments they need to thrive.

hi yall! so ive dm'd a one shot before and think one shots are best for a server this big and for the amount of people who want to learn and play (maybe even multiple one shots with the same story line because of how many seem interested, plus just because the story line may be the same, the way people roleplay and interact will be wildly different). so if it is ok with the higher ups, i want to write a one shot campaign if anyone is interested. def no set date and no set time because i am juggling a lot, but i love dnd and would love to share my itty little bit of knowledge and just play with the wonderful people of pottercord! of course the one shot would take place in the wizarding world :p

Just wanted everyone interested a quick little "whats happening". I am planning on having this one shot in the winter because some of us are in school and will be out for vacation and will have more time then. So I am aiming to have the first one shot either late December or January. And I am planning on having start up sessions, where everyone gets to know each and other and I get to know you especially and we start talking about our characters! This is planned to be happening in November (hopefully), and there will be like about 3 different meetings so there is a chance for people in different time zones. Of course nothing is set in stone :)

I have some experience being a DM in a group of five people, but how could this take shape in the server? I can only think of VC sessions?

yeah, originally the plan was to introduce how to do d&d sessions before doing the actual game session to get players or other people to see if they’re interested. Since there’s a lot of people who are interested but less people who are interested in DMing, we need more ppl to DM rn if there’s ever a chance that this becomes a success. I feel VC sessions are probably better for players to participate in, so they’re much more immersed to the game rather than reading and typing etcetc.

I feel like someone should write a poll thing on here where you have some options of emojis to click on for what you wanna do, like if you wanna DM click the book emoji, if you're an experienced player click the fencing emoji, if you're inexperienced and wanna learn click the raised eyebrow emoji, if you aren't sure and are just here for updates click the question mark. or something like that. Just to help keep track.

I have experience as a DM and have been learning more. I use roll20 a free to use site and I can always start up games just for server members. I have a mess of prewritten campaign books for 5th edition and I also have some homebrews brewing in the cauldron that is my brain.

In that meantime there can be an entire event made out of the actual game night where people follow it getting played out

How long these campaigns run, etc can be decided

But first we need to know who all are into this

No, with D&D it's usually a dungeon master guiding us through the game

I have a bit of experiences and resources I can share etc. So I will join in.

Just for everyone’s knowledge, especially those who have never played before:

The idea of this is to have a server campaign. So it will be involved. We need a DM, and the DM needs to create the world and write the story. That will take some time.

At this stage, we are looking at how many people would be interested in participating. There is no use starting this huge undertaking if we dint have enough people to support it/participate in it/listening to the story ya know?

Its really nice to see all of this excitement! Try to keep it up! Just be aware that this is likely not something that will get on its legs in like a week. Its a long term plan.

As for game play, we wont be using a bot. It will be el naturel with a lovely team we will assemble to drive sessions.

Dont worry if you have never played before! We can always do something like a pre-session info session and there is always the opportunity to ask questions and learn in game!

Again, this is early days and at the moment we only need to know how much interest there is from out community /._./

I get that. The flip side to it is its not good to do something halfassed and end up disappointing people, or worse, completely out them off of something, because it wasn’t done properly. What we need to remember: if you are interested in dnd now, you will likely be interested next month as well. If you read the first HP book and you loved it, you wont abandon the series if you couldn’t obtain the second book right away, no? People generally stay interested in things they are interested in. Also! If excitement dies down and people forget, they will be excited all over again when it ends up happening /._./

I’ve played a tabletop game once (with @outer tiger actually) so I’m pretty new

Ill say this with dnd even though we have a fair amount of people saying they'd like to join id suggest having groups of probably 5 to 6 players per dm because too many players will be chaotic and cause sessions to slow down extremely

As of right now we don't even have 1 experienced DM 😬

We dont need an exprerienced dm just someone who's willing and able to keep up with it. Just need knowledge of game mechanics and story telling

Since this isnt a dnd server, i doubt anyone is expecting a world class dm

Perhaps, but wouldn't a DM also have to come up with an engaging plot

You just have to have someone who's able to come up with a good story. And im pretty sure we have plenty of good writers around here

i’ve dmed before & would be interested, but my schedule is kinda wild lately - if we can dm with a partner i’d be more able to be involved

I'm currently getting into it. Tbh I have little experience but I did lots of research and am actually plotting something that may be usable. XD. I'd like to at least try as a DM. A question would be: would we be doing this in a voice or text channel?

I love storytelling so I would like to try

How ive seen it done in the past for other servers is a mixture of both, vc for the main talking, roleplaying, etc and then a text channel for a dice roller bot

An older rulebook style of play would allow the story to unfold itself based on what the players do more than the newer rulebooks and campaigns which tend to have a lot more effort needed to create a pre-crafted story, just something to keep in mind

ehhh that mostly depends on the DM not so much the version, ive experienced plenty of campaigns that were on the fly and based around what the players do.

one of my friends built a fairly basic world frame with enough characters to really push the story in anyway, was the ending still the same? mostly we still killed the big bad but he adapted the journey of it to our characters (especially since 2 of our players swapped characters mid campaign and mine was constantly falling out of alignment due to a curse)

and that was in the 5e system

It might've been that the old one has a higher chance of ur characters dying and then you having to remake them a lot, i can't remember anymore

5e is beginner friendly

plus when you said that i was thinking you might've been talking about the modules aka pre-built campaigns that you have to read the entire book and then create the campaign before running it which does have a lot of prep time and tends to push players down a linear path depending on the module.

They are cool don't get me wrong but if the worry is that the DM is taking on too much at once then i would stay away from them

yeah you can do custom campaigns, it's not all those things the modules can help but they can also hurt

I like the way of playing where your characters have a high chance of dying until they've levelled up a bit so that if your character survives and thrives it feels like a real accomplishment haha

I played in them a few times and they are fun but it's a very different type of play in the end

i need to get around to DMing for my group of friends which at this point i might just go with a custom campaign

hi there! i didn't realize this channel was made. i've never played dnd and tbh would probably be a bit confused doing so but ever since i watched the first season of stranger things, i've always wanted to learn how to play!

It depends on how many particupants there are. Weekly may be a but much if the dm isnt experienced because they will need to come up with a whole ‘episode’. It may be good to start, say, three weekly or something like that. But again, if all the players are new and still learning, weekly sessions would be good because a lot of the time may be taken up by learning how to do things/how things work as opposed to the storytelling part
