I think a debating stage for a certain topic in the Harry Potter world could help people in the server share their opinions or ideas in the server to others. I have heard it has been a thing before, but got a little wild. I think it could work, as long as there are moderators in the stage, to make sure it doesn't get too rowdy again.

It could be weekly, with every stage having a different debate topic. Or maybe it could just be a one time thing. Nonetheless, however it's done. it's not any fun to completely avoid letting people express their opinions and attempt to convince others of it. Debating is not inheritably a bad thing, and if done right, it could make the server a bit more lively dogekek

I think it should be a stage, so people who aren't necessarily participating in the main talking part of the stage, could say what they think in stage chat.

To give you greater clarity. We've had both debate channels and debate events on Stage channels. Debate channel was merged into #978360042749321256 for general topics and #976898455253434418 for Harry Potter. Debate events have never been blocked off. One can always bring those back.

And while we plan to conduct one officially, there is nothing preventing you using any of our VCs to have such discussions informally. Just make sure you are polite and follow the server rules.

so to clarify - can we or can we not have “debates” in #976898455253434418 when something is posted?

Of course you can debate. As long as you are civilized and do not disparage people for holding opinions.

In either of those forums, to create a new post, make sure to provide the main topic, as well as a brief description for all interested to jump into the debate.

Please note, debates include the following:

  • Your opinion on a matter/point followed by
  • Factual evidence to support/disprove a point
  • Objective data and observations
  • Logical stipulation of said point/opinion in proper format

Debates do not include:

  • Personal statements/accusations/attacks
  • Blanket statements to a person/group/opinion
  • Intentionally stirring/riling people up with personal statements

^This is an argument, not a debate.

Note that it is imperative to be respectful to all participants in a debate and all existing server rules continue to remain valid, as do Discord's Terms of Service.
