I tried recreating sand (To have a sand variant that isn't affected by gravity) but the custom block appears to be darker. I used the same texture that vanilla sand uses and tried every combination with ambient occlusion, light dampening and face dimming but no matter what, it doesn't look like the vanilla sand looks and I'm not sure what's causing this to happen

vanilla sand has less intense ambient occlusion
setting the ambient_occlusion in material instances to 0.55 should fix it
it doesn't change much
if you move it away from the vanilla sand does that change anything

i can't get the sand to look that dark, but custom blocks will always be slightly darker than vanilla because ambient occlusion is broken
