WHAT??? Panning using middle mouse and orbiting is so cool.
I never knew what I was missing till yall implemented this.
Got to the editor section of the changelog! It looks big, excited to dive in and then come back here
New movement!!!!
AYO!
I'm in love
The movement changes are great
I’m not sure why I never vocalized this feedback myself, but when I first tried out the editor ages ago the controls was the first thing I noticed that I majorly didn’t like, it’s hard to say why I thought that tho
If I get time I’ll definitely check these new changes and see how I feel now
Yeah movement is sometimes hard to give feedback on because sometimes you don't really know what you're missing from other experiences.
I just went back and had a go with those controls, and i think my reason for disliking the old controls was that they never felt like they were meant to be on a big scale if that makes sense, using ctrl and space works really well at the small scale, but to me doesn't feel great at a large scale same with the camera controls they were always pretty similar to creative mode just with right click held and moving slightly faster.
I think i definitely still have some feedback for these new controls:
-
The panning is backwards, mmb + drag should move you in the opposite direction and act like a pan tool. How mc does it is the opposite to many tools, some examples I have are blockench, blender, the unity editor, miro, pretty much every program with a pan tool
-
MMB + drag mouse up/down should pan vertically and not forward/backwards. For examples of programs which do this look into Unity, blender, etc.
-
I think moving forward should take into account vertical look too (I attached a video comparing how unity does it compared to the editor to better explain it), to me it makes a lot of sense, iirc this is pretty common too in these kinda programs.
I think moving forward should take into account vertical look
I think this would be cool
Great feedback! Movement has been a really tricky balance of what industry norms are for professional tools as well as what Minecraft does (which breaks a lot of these norms in many cases). This rev of our controls definitely moves towards more of professional tools but we are still doing things slightly different compared to a few other professional tools as noted here. We would love to continue to hear from others about what sane defaults should be for Editor, as well as what should be customizable for individuals to personalize their experience. Always open to change these in the future if the community feels strongly about these!
I'll put this in the backlog to prototype!
