replace item command

Does that command work for other items? My first thought was that the player is not a chest... so was wondering if you can use that location on an entity and not only on a chest/barrel type

because the player doesnt have chest slots you need to use /replaceitem block if you want to use it on a chest

Can I test to see if the chest has the item first before doing so?

Or will it just replace it automatically regardless of what's there

if its a specific chest layout everytime you could use if blocks if not, you could use hasitem on a enderchest otherwise i dont know any way with commands
