unborn gale
#

It's between golf and polo but at least you ride a horse in polo

#

Golf is literally just whacking a ball a long distance

grave slate
#

ok im back

grave slate
#

theres an unreasonable amount of land taken away to whack this small ball

#

it doesnt take that much effort to hit a ball relative to other sports

unborn gale
#

However, the sport is so damn boring it's still unreasonable to spend so much land on it

#

Because that's all you're doing

#

So much land on hitting the ball, yeah sure it's the point but like dude, all that land for one thing is crazy

#

I agree with you but for a different reason pretty much lmao

alternate solution:
the casino has a certain amount of money. (starts with a million) whenever someone loses, the cash gets transferred to them, but whenever someone wins, their winnings are given to the victor.

this way someone wouldn’t just dupe coins out of thin air whenever they get extremely lucky and become the richest, and it would be more realistic than putting a hard cap on the system

#

also if someone wins and the casino doesn’t have enough money to pay out, then only the amount that can be paid out is given to the victor

cerulean bay
wispy bolt
#

what if what we do is have a middleman who is incredibly rich and then give them money and then make a bet and if you win they give you your winnings so that way there is no limit

with the stocks

#

you put money in a stock and they gamble with it

#

and if they lose money the stock goes down

#

if they make money it goes up

#

so it wouldnt really be that crazy

for the immortality one you will never stop growing and you will outlast the universe but you will feel everything

Temporary suffering vs eternal suffering with a small hint of fun in the beginning ahh 😭 🙏

covert thorn
unborn gale
#

I wonder if you'd just get to used to feeling everything after an eternity

#

Actually that might just mean insanity

grave slate
#

like if you were punched and you didnt get hurt from it you would feel the pain like you got hurt from it

#

i dont know how to explain it

#

you are mentally vincible

#

and you will outlast truly everything

#

but you will feel everything

frank latch

# frank latch so be a vegetable or be immortal?

cool, the first billion years of that immortality would be nice, but eventually this Earth that we stand on will die due to the expansion of the Sun, causing the surface of the planet to be baked and scorched to hundreds of degrees. you won’t die, but you’ll feel all of it. eventually, after trillions of years, you will be floating in space, asphyxiating for eternity, wanting to have chosen the first option

#

pretty much this can be summed down to:

  1. finite suffering
  2. have a period of normality and then infinite suffering
frank latch
elder arch
#

you could also factor in that this is effectively a massive gamble and humanity could also just go extinct

frank latch
#

but
as an immortal. You can influence the odds

elder arch
# frank latch but as an immortal. You can influence the odds

even if humanity did go extinct, you could try and reconstruct all of their industries to build your own space program. but the amount of effort required would be monumental, sisyphean even. you would have a billion years to do so, but you’d have to replicate the efforts of 100 billion of your own who lived, died, and contributed to advance technology in their own way

#

to build a rocket with solar escape velocity seems simple on the surface, but throw all of the work onto ONE person and make them start from scratch and it quickly becomes an efficiency nightmare.

unborn gale
elder arch
#

youd effectively have to turn yourself into a machine

#

its important to note that there are so many technological steps needed in order to produce something like a steam engine, and even that could be considered rudimentary nowadays. theres a reason it took our ancestors so much time to reach any sort of technological complexity.

#

we as a species are designed to thrive off of cooperation, placing all of that work on yourself just wouldnt work for so many reasons. doable? yes. feasible? absolutely not.

unborn gale
#

Fair enough yeah

#

But a billion years is still absurdly long, so I wouldn't totally rule it out

#

Could be that for a few hundred million the dude suffers immensely before figuring out a system that works

elder arch
#

assuming that we didnt just bring any information with us, we’d also have to reinvent everything by ourselves too

unborn gale
#

Then spends several hundred million more before succeeding, or maybe still fails along the way

unborn gale
#

We have a lot of information readily available rn, wouldn't be too hard to store it somehow

#

All the time in the world to write it all out if the technology fails after however long

#

Yk what tho, all of this is pointless anyway

#

Heat death of the universe

elder arch
#

alright but are we accounting for drive failure? information loss? theres no way a modern computer could last even a thousand years, or even a notebook. so for the best convenience you’d have to memorize everything

unborn gale
#

Whatever the immortal manages to do, won't matter when heat death rolls around

#

Endless, painful drifting through a black void awaits for all eternity, no matter how far they manage to get

elder arch
#

i mean tbh that is the inevitable fate of our immortal. even if they manage to escape Earth, even if they manage to construct hundreds of civilizations where they are the only inhabitant, even if they’re able to succeed in staving off entropy for a few more millions of years, eventually everything they have built will crumple to dust and their machines will cease to operate, until the only thing that remains in the dying universe is themselves. and in their final moments as the universe finally succumbs, they will realise that they were never intended to be happy, they were only intended to go with the universe

unborn gale
#

Yep

elder arch
#

honestly sounds like the plot of a short sci-fi story im ngl

unborn gale
#

Then probably asphyxiate until the black holes whittle themselves down to nothing

unborn gale
#

Wouldn't be surprised if there's something like that out there already ngl

frank latch

#

The first one is the much better option

#

You will just die in the end after your suffering

#

We will all die eventually

#

The second one is just hell after a while

#

Nothing you do will matter it will just fade to time eventually

#

Everyone you love will die

#

And you can never quit

#

You will live TRILLIONS of years after the heat death of the universe

#

Alone with nothing

#

So this Is my case for why option 1 is actually superior

grave slate
#

i think one thing to account for on option two are black holes

#

like you are drifting in space

#

and get spaghettified

#

however this version of immortality will violate anything to keep you alive

cunning forge
#

it isn't specified that parts of your body can die

#

so technically you'd start suffering from your blood being poisoned and cancer in the first few years of immortality

#

and if you get a blood transfusion to fix it you'll be getting blood that isn't immortal and you'd feel the pain of being bloodless for eternity
