How do servers work I tried setting up a server to play multiplayer Rimworld and it was a nightmare

I still have the server app and files installed on my computer but nobody could ever join it because I couldnt figure out how ports and IPs worked

Rimworld server hosting doesn't sound as easy as people make hosting Minecraft/Terraria servers
