It’s specifically used for helo operations. It’s to clip into the floor of birds when operating with open doors. Most SOF birds didn’t have seats/harnesses so everyone clipped into the floor that contained numerous mounting points. No for what it was at the time I was satisfied with the IBA. Never any complaints about it or securing the plates. I wore a medium vest with small plates to shave overall carried weight

I think I remember a strap in the inside that secured the plate tightly but I can’t remember exactly how it worked now. Should just wrap either on top or bottom of plate then secure to inside panel if I remember correctly. I last wore an IBA in 2009 then until I got out in end of 2010 I used the TT carrier.

Not sure how it is now but starting around 2004 issued equipment really changed and lots of “standard issue” wasn’t standard issue across the board. The RFI program rapidly fielded improved equipment like helmets and such due to GWOT demands but also units had unlimited credit purchase cards. It wasn’t uncommon for our supply to order hundreds and hundreds of items from private sources like tactical tailor that then became “standard issue” within the unit

I remember going to TT right outside post when they still had their big physical location with our supply NCO at work pre deployment and told get whatever I needed for my boys for Iraq. This was pretty common at the time and I’m sure it was probably an army wide thing and not just limited to my unit. Deployment was king

Like I said previously you don’t have to match plate size with vest size. I wore a medium vest but used small plates. Less coverage but also shaved a couple pounds which was appreciated since my kit weighed 81 lbs before adding any additional mission essential equipment or munitions

That was including my personal ammo load of 10 mags but I often carried additional stuff including a belt of 7.62, spare smokes and frags. We sometimes also humped 60mm mortar rounds for the company mortar section of they we’re bringing a tube

IBA armor with a Tactical Tailor modular harness. This was taken on Thanksgiving morning without the front panrel and no smokes or bangs so this was about as light as my kit could get.

Never used the IOTV. They were coming into service during my last deployment but had very limited supply and sizes available. I heard mixed reviews of them.

So have I I only used one a couple of times before falling out of my cycle I might go with the scav tier iotv for now because it hold the plates in the correct spot better than the IBA which sits low and my 6b45 which holds them to low

At least till I get a PC or better vest

this is a very common misconception, UCP was actually pretty good for where it was designed.

Another thing to note is that UCP was also designed to basically soak up the ambient dust, dirt, and foliage stains from the environment it was used in to blend into it better

The Army originally intended to issue dye kits for it iirc, to make it more effective in any environment, but for some reason they didnt go through with it

ESAPI plates are meant for larger AP threats whereas form my understanding SAPI plate are more equivalent to nij 3+

Ya. The SAPI plates were essentially for standard small arms protection and shattered fairly easily. The Es protected against higher threats and could eat multiple hits
