Realistically I rarely wore gloves. Anytime we were hitting a target house I wore them because we sometimes were climbing compound walls and all the Iraqis mortared broken glass into top of walls as a form of security. Try to rake it mostly clean with rifle barrel but gloves helped with the rest

I actually tried to do airborne when I enlisted. I wanted the option 40 RIP contract but being dumb 17 year old at MEPs when they told me all they could offer was 11X with no RIP or airborne I took it as truth and just said ok. At Benning an NCO came from Regt looking for volunteers for airborne and RIP. I was probably first in line to sign up. Nothing ever came of it and just made the best of my time as a leg grunt and now don’t feel like I missed out on anything. I had a solid 8 years. E5 in two, E6 in four and made the 7 in 7 list. Rated combat time as a rifle TL, SL and PSG. No regerts.

Our Strykers took a beating at times and it imo was the scariest time because you had basically no control, you were just at the mercy of the vehicle and if it could take what was thrown at it. Being on the ground in contact could get scary but when I was able to react and make decisions it drove that anxiety away. My Stryker was the only one in our platoon to not eat an IED so I was fortunate in that…unfortunately my squad ate several dismounted IEDs…would have rather been mounted up for once 😂

Fair warning…every time I went up against those JRTC opfor we made quick work of them. It’s probably changed now since so much time has passed but at time it seemed like when we did our rotations thru there it was between deployments and it seemed very unfair. Honestly biggest fear is that being in a vic zero control you are relying on 2 people an that’s it. I know my uncle he was a driver hit an IED took a major TBI he actually transferred units after that because he didn’t wanna be in any sort of armored or mech or light mech unit at all switched to 101 cause of that incident. I know airborne is same risk plane gets shot down potentially but I feel lot less risky because airborne operations are meant for LSCO so all AA or radars are in theory gonna be gone an there’s gonna be air escorts along with awacs an all the other fun toys. I remember we did an 8 hour flight but flew out to the Russian border an we had some raptors an A-10s an a awacs flying with us because protocol was you go near border you need an escort

I got my TBI from one of the dismounted IEDs my squad ate. Actually every casualty my platoon took was outside the vics. They did good by us and stopped pretty much everything thrown at them to include literally RPGs with that birdcage armor. One sound I’ll never forget is the sudden stopping of small arms hitting the slat armor. But I do agree, being inside those things gave me anxiety and it only increased when we made contact while mounted. As soon as I stepped off the ramp even with bullets flying it was instant relief.

this unit uses a mix of ACH, IHPS, TW bumps (GPC purchased), opscore bumps, carbons and ballistics like MT/SF/SX/HC. most of it is hand me downs from regiment

the thing with this unit and POI is it requires collaboration with other units like SFAB, SF groups, mainly regiment, and other branches to stay up and running

Ya my last 2 years was with our bn recce platoon. The best training was our 1SG had just left RTB as instructor and he put all our recce teams thru full on patrol school and graded us using the sheet standards they were using at RS at the time. We became very Ranger task proficient lol

i started using the speaker mic more and more since we use the Harris XG100 alot here, it doesnt play well with peltors

The peltor 2 was pretty much the only thing available to us at the time and we didn’t have those nice helmet rails to mount to. Headband under regular cut MICH was a no go. Ended up taking them off the headband and velcro them inside MICH. Was the only practical way at the time
