We rarely used our dismounted handheld thermals and it was solely for overwatch of POTENTIAL target identification. They are nearly worthless in an active boots on the ground night fighting environment because they can’t pick up IR aiming devices as well as IR iff devices. We had a tragic blue on blue KIA in Iraq because the thermals provide way less identifiable details and didn’t pick up the IR strobe marking the blue position. Every time we requested rotor wing support we painted targets with IR aim/flood…never once a thermal paint because it doesn’t exist. Same for blue ground supporting elements. We painted targets and sectors of fire/responsibility with IR. What’s your plan to shoot in no/low light environments. Can’t look thru an optic with a thermal monocular…it won’t pick up a reticle. Thermals are good if you’re static. About as close to worthless you can get when actively engaged in fighting, specifically in close quarters in close proximity of blues. If you’re really hell bent on getting involved in Ukraine fighting return them and pick up ENVGs

Tip carry couple pockets worth of 9v batts. Connect them together reverse polarity. Makes a small heat signature identifiable by high quality thermals but really only picked up by someone aware of what they’re looking for when scanning for it.

tbf missions in Ukraine are going to be nothing alike to GWOT era armed conflict. Multiple of the things you stated are non issues for a force without air superiority. Trench warfare is typically static, you don't exactly move much in a trench. Plus I wouldn't have much a use for dual tube NVGs (hell I could buy GPNVGs and it'd still be the same) my left eye is pretty much blind, right eye's relatively decent. A thermal for target recognition and primarily static combat roles is the way to go imo. IR also works absolutely perfectly at night just like NVGs. I understand NVGs coincided with your SOP but Ukraine is different.

This is what he should be spending his money on if he’s serious. Can roll between standard NODs or thermals or can come mine then to give a thermal overlay to NODs image. Can still utilize IR capabilities as well. No need to break your neck trying to somehow aim down a canted iron sight with a half ass sight picture after adjusting the diopter ring to focus in on irons wearing a mono if you couple it with a proper IR device

The link I posted above is what I recommend for him. It’s essentially a civilian PSQ20 with thermal imaging overlay or standalone thermal/NODs modes. Straight thermal only is absolutely dumb. Even dumber when your plan is to use it with irons

As far as I’m aware the properties of nighttime hasn’t changed since GWOT.

In just 5 minutes I pulled up numerous YT videos of foreign legion fighters in Ukraine with a large majority equipped with weapon mounted IR aiming devices meaning they are running NODs and likely IR IFF as well. Gonna really suck when your entire team is running IR IFF devices and you can’t identify them and can’t identify any targets they are IR painting for one another because NODs are so GWOT…
