The reason the AK is like it is is because it was designed in the fucking 1940s and is the pinnacle of a functional design. It works, nothing more, hence why everyone views it as such a revaluation. It worked significantly more reliably than its competitors for few decades until the competition was all of a sudden able to comprehend the AKs down falls and design solutions, whilst the AK just remained the same shit bucket with minor continuous design improvements until we are where we are today. The AK is irrelevant in every way other than the fact it’s famously just a functional firearm, that due to its ability to function (unbelievable I know) and vast ammunition reserves in the east it still sees combat to this day. There is no other reason other than a lack of urgent requirement to replace the AKM as to why it and any of its variants are still being used. It’s not a good weapon, it’s a functional design.
