Don't have many white friends so not many WW2 stories to go around. But one night drank too much with a friend so went to her family's place to sober up. Stumbled on her great grandfather's shadowbox that was nice and humble. Bronze star/v, purple heart, EAMC with campaign stars and an arrowhead, CIB and regimental crest. Asked her about it and she said they didn't know much about it so basically spent the rest of that night helping piece together what he might've done

Looked up the regiment's history and eventually found notes left by the grandmother. Landed at D-Day then spent the next few days slogging through some major German defensive lines with something like a 70% casualty rate-he earned the bronze star and purple heart during an operation that got his bn a PUC. Spent all of 2 months in Europe before being evac'd back to the states for the rest of the war

That also reminds me, one of my residents was a 92 y/o Vietnamese guy who was a colonel in the AVRN. Wasn't coherent enough to tell any stories but whenever I was on the floor passing by his room he'd always see me and give a bright wave since I look like I could be one of his great/grandchildren. Had another Vietnamese colleague at the time and we liked to call him Gramps. I miss him

I had a neighbor (kinda a third set of grandparents), Ed Carnes, whom I ended up spending some time with at his house slowly learning his story as I grew up. He was a C-47 pilot in Vietnam and he flew every variant. After the war was over, he was part of the first batch of pilots for FedEx (number 31). He is actually the reason I really got into war history and books, because he collected books. He had some cool first editions, but the one that always stuck out to me was a book that was the complete history of Florence from the 1400s. Anyway, probably the coolest pilot I ever met. He passed away in 2019.
