The 9700k has no hyperthreading (locked) and only it's 8 physical cores. Overall the 8700k can in some cases show better multitasking or core-intensive performance than the 9700k despite being an older generation

I think most if not any modern game can utilize or benefit from hyperthreading. Not all games use more than 4 cores effectively. But I'd say games utilizing 4 cores is standard nowadays.
