so there are two things here, exposure and leaning.
If you're standing behind a cover and the AI doesn't have LOS on you he won't engage. You can abuse that mechanic with leaning - you're center of mass will still be behind a cover and you'll be able to take a shot. But if you're going to expose yourself it's better to expose yourself fully, because once the AI gets LOS on you it will lock on and start shooting, if the only part of your body sticking out would be head, then guess at what he'll be locking on..
