Then I took the advice i heard here of not taking fights i couldn't win, so I didn't try to wait around and pick someone trying to come find me.

Going straight through on the main road to extract would be more angles and more difficult to traverse than taking the side route next to the big sheds. I've used it plenty of times to extract safely.

Yeah the biggest factor to fighting in this game is the ammo imo and at this point in the wipe everybody who isn't new is running at lease lv 4 armor. Here is a link to all the ammo in the game. Usually scavs will not pursue you and after 4 seconds they will stop aggroing you. Then you peak out and see if you can voice line them again and identify their position… duck into cover and repeat until you have a good understanding of where they are

Then line up your shot and take them out while they voice line
