Following the quests would be your best bet, as it helps you level up and unlock more things - getting to lvl 15 is quite important for the all might flea market
A lot will be customs early on, some woods, then it starts dipping into other maps

Have a map on a 2nd monitor/device, run about in offline mode (perhaps with scavs on to practise a little fighting). Get to know where the 3 major stores are and where they are in relation to the outside.
The outside can be cut into 4 bits, "Railway area", "PowerPlant/Car extract", "Emercom", and south west which is just empty.
Inside 1st floor has 3 major stores (Idea, Goshun, OLI), and a large central area with various stores. Learn 1 section before moving on to the next - until you have a decent idea of where things are.
The underground parking isnt vital to learn fully, but is a good utility to move about undetected.
2nd floor is largely useless except a couple of very strong loot spots "Techlight" and Atteka. Highly contested though.

Yeah, the map can often be very dark. I'd actually suggest messing a little with post-fx for that map to make it a little easier to see (it helped me a little bit at least), otherwise a flashlight is always a good friend

Ammo is what dictates damage/pen, so it depends on what you have access to (what lvl are you?)

For raw good pen, you have very few choices. I would suggest trying a shotgun. You can craft 8.5mm "Magnum" which deals a lot of damage, but Express and regular 7mm will do you ok.
The trick though is that you have to aim for the legs, as they dont do well against armour, but can quickly shred any player so long as you hit their legs.
For a more traditional style, 7.62 PS is very decent against class 3 armour, can chew a little against class 4.
The 5.45 equivalent would be BP (which you likely dont have sadly)

Edit: To clarify, shooting PMCs in the legs (with shotguns), scavs dont often have good armour, so you can usually just blast them (with shotguns)

Yeah factory has some very close spawns, and people abuse that to rush them. Other spawns are really bad to stay in (like the hallway with a red blinking light).
learning/knowing where people spawn is a decently big part of surviving the first few minutes of that map
