Keep in mind the extracts are usually on the other side of the map from where you spawned, so once you locate the extracts on map genie, then you can rule out half the map. Besides locating the extracts, look for key landmarks around you like a road or train track. That's how I figure it out.

Oh yeah pocket watch from the tanker near the collapsed building, you’ll need a key for that. If you don’t have the key I would recommend just doing offline raids to learn customs.

The thorax kill quest sounds like a daily, the daily quests can be kinda nice to get items for other quests but their rouble/exp rates have never been good enough for me to focus on them.

Grab a map and run some off lines and I’m sure you’ll get the hang of customs in no time :)
