find/buy the Azimut rig, fill it with single/2 slot items. it gives you 2 or 4 more 1x2 slots than it takes up. If you find some rigs like the ones with a 2x2 slot, those are good for storing helmets along with a bunch of small items
i like the LCBR rig for storing helmets and headsets. It has 2 four-square slots as well as space for my pistols~

honestly i have no general advice for that other than to determine where you are getting shot from by just moving around
and use awareness of your surroundings because you could probably spot them in the distance
