i think you should give it a fair shot for a few days, i go fully insured into all raids unless the armor is damaged and unrepairable below ~60% of its original durability. it saves space when u kill someone you just insurance fraud your kit so you can loot them and not have it take up bag space

As a solo player that died a lot at the beggining, the best advice I can give you is to learn the customs map. Most of the initial quests will require you to go to that map, and it can be a pain in the ass if you don't know it very well. You can try going in offline mode to learn the map (with or without scavs, that's your choice), or do a pistol run (just a pistol and maybe meds on your safe container).

Don't linger in doorways.
Clear your corners, don't just glance past them.
Always move cover-to-cover. Don't just move in a direction.
Always have an idea of two directions you can rush through if you suddenly take fire.
Don't try to watch every angle. It's better to push in and take two locations deliberately than to spread your attention into twenty different spots.
Understand what is cover and what is concealment.
Study the maps for landmarks. You don't need to know every street and corners. Recognizing a specific train section or warehouse can be all you need.

Get out of the doorway as soon as possible.

A common mistake I see a lot of people make before I kill them is walking out into a very open street that has no cover for twenty meters or worse.
