Yeah, the game can be very brutal. I would suggest using your scav as often as you can, also, try out offline mode with bots enabled to get your bearings on the maps you play, as well as practice in gunplay. Playing with people can also help a lot in surviving more

I usually sell guns with 60 or less durability. I would also sell guns that you're never going to use. If you think you're never going to go in with an M4 before lvl 20, then sell them, as you can just buy new ones of the flea market. Overcoming "gearfear" (not wanting to use/sell gear since you dont want to lose it) can be tough, but remember that you can always get it back with the flea.

I can't join, but what you can do, is go into offline mode Woods and try to learn the landmarks of the map to get your bearings.
The big central mountain is the main point of knowing where you are. Lumbermill/big lake to the south, south-eastern camp, the 3 villages to the north, etc.
Finding and recognising these areas will help a lot in knowing where you are. Of course have a map of Woods on a 2nd monitor/phone

If you're able to do the quest "Search mission" from Prapor (need lvl 5 and have completed Debut), then you'll get a compass to help further. Unfortunately the quest takes place on woods as well, but its an extremely useful tool when you dont know the maps

(disassemble you gun first then sell all the parts. and thats about what ive figured out without any help
