i have always recommended running the worst gear possible to knew players tbh, it forces you to learn on the game and rely on yourself rather than gear. It is hard and you will die often, but in the long run it will make you a better player. However, you really should run just whatever you enjoy.
If you want to run a stock AK go for it, if you want to pimp it out a little then do that

I've just played with Scav 99% of the time. A quick extract, selling the Scav gear, wait 20min and repeat. With PMC I've been trying to do a quest in Woods so I've purchased the cheapest pistol and ammo for that. Just about 1-2k on insurance. So a 1-2k loss, 1 Scav run is usually about 15k or more.
