Its not to expensive, but if you have a good gun + good ammo, people will often want to use it, which means you lose your mags. Essentially, the less value is on the mags/ammo/gun, the higher chance of it returning on insurance.

If high-pen rounds isn't an option for you to get through their armor, then going for leg-meta (high damage - low pen ammo) would be a good option. Otherwise you'd have to try to avoid or outplay them somehow

M80 rounds are fairly good, but might struggle a little against 6, at 400+ a round
7.x62x54 rounds are good if you like sniping, as most of them will handle most armors well

Either try to kill them quickly, though that can be really difficult. Or just get into any cover as fast as possible. Also, breaking line of sight with bushes/trees is very powerful as it makes it really hard to snipe someone through them. Keeping your movement "random" and inconsistent helps too.
But if they are a good shot, then there is little you can do besides this to try to survive.

Optics are just preference for the most part. I prefer the ones that obscures as little of my screen as possible. It can help to use scopes with 2x or more magnification to get a better shot.
With some guns you can have 2 scopes, 1 with magnification, another regular. (or use a scope with variable magnification)...... magnification.

Honestly, just leave the quest be until its one of the last ones left, as you will probably have some progress towards it then. When you get there, or if you want to do it now, using a meta-level semiautomatic (or another gun you're very comfortable with at range) with the strongest ammo would be advised to minimize factors that make you not hit your target, or not pen a lethal shot.
In terms of getting the range down, there are certain spots on each map that people like to use, such as 'sniper rock' (big mountain in the middle) on woods. Generally spots that give you a good overview of the map, while being far away from general hotspot or areas people run through.

You could save them for the bitcoin farm, as all 3 levels need a bunch, (or vents 2, which need 3). Or use them for crafting gpus, (which isn't great right now), or finally for the M4 barter with peacekeeper, should you get more non-fir cpus
