don't take pistol only or you'll be marked and cursed by NPC's I think, take a sling + bank robber rig at least alongside it... SKS is more firepower and range, I like it

I think that's a good mentality for the start. I wouldn't be taking armor. PACA doesn't really do anything except stop shotgun pellets and some very low-level bullets/slugs. But you'll be likely more dying to geared players than anything else and it costs 23k on ragman I believe, which is not really worth

For me the biggest change was to pretty much not sprint everywhere

I would walk in customs from one extract along the edge of the map listening for audio cues and examining the area around for players

Personally i grind out level 1 with the aks the game gives you, at 2 i go to jaegar and unlock him, 2-10 i do solo night factory runs with a flashlight, 10 rounds later im level 10 and have flea, if anyone else does it diff cool but thats how i roll
