Same thing I tell every rookie: First thing to do is RESET EXPECTATIONS. Doesn’t matter how much or how well you do in other shooters. This is a knowledge game. You will die and die due to lack of experience not gear. Experience. It will require persistence and commitment. You need to learn maps, scav behavior, PMC behavior, what is good vs. bad ammo. Practice OFFLINE mode, with scavs on, at Customs. Try to make it from spawn to exit 10 times. IF you can do this 50% of the time then you are ready for online. Meanwhile use your scav at Interchange to get loot and learn the map.

And yes the gear isn't a factor for rookies.

Last wipe I reset 5 months in. Was back to level 1 with level 1 gear against all the people who were level 50 with high tier gear. I was able to do all the tasks and climb back up to the high 40's before the wipe happended because I had the experience to know how to play with the low level gear.
